Since competitions in karate take place within bouts and katas, the subject matter of this study are the psychological characteristics which contribute to this differentiation. The goal of the research is to determine the predictive values of psychological characteristics in the competitive selection of karatekas. In relation to the subject matter and goals of the research, as well as studies carried out so far, a hypothesis has been formulated: significant differences exist in goal orientation between karatekas of various competitive orientation. The study included 79 karatekas, 12 to 14 years old, 37 of whom are competitors in bouts, 23 of whom practice katas, and 19 respondents who take part in both disciplines. In order to evaluate the motivational orientation, we used the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ), designed by Duda & Nicholls. Even though the overall results did not confirm the initial hypothesis that the respondents of various competitive orientation should differ in their motivational climate of goal orientation, they to a large extent can be of significant help in the proper selection of young competitors in karate.

The object of interest in this sketch is an analysis of the vocabulary indicating selected elements of the world of fauna and fl ora in Symbolika wiosenna (Spring symbolism) by Stefania Ulanowska (Kraków 1884). The collected language material is characterised by wealth and complexity of the subject matter. The indicated vocabulary has not been characterised yet. This paper employs elements of the cognitivist description of language. The selection of this method enables depiction of the relation between linguistic knowledge and encyclopaedic knowledge. Language becomes an indispensible element of mental processes of the perception of the world (Tokarski 1995; Miodunka 1980). The analysis of the excerpted material clearly shows that the discussed spring symbolism usually invokes, contrary to the prototype, the semantic fi eld related to ‘śmierć’ (death) rather than ‘życie’ (life). The reconstructed image of the folk idea of spring largely deviates from the ideas established in the consciousness of language users in general, which is confi rmed by the discussed examples. It presents unit connotations that are individualised and present in the consciousness of members of small rural communities of those times. Keywords: Stefania Ulanowska – vocabulary of fauna and flora

The increasing complexity of supply chains, whose structure is changing from a linear to network form creates the need to track a growing amount of information allowing the evaluation of the functioning of the entire supply chain. Developing a system for measuring the performance of the supply chain requires the proper selection of indicators. Performance measurement should be done in a particular context, the analysed dimensions of indicators resulting from the purpose and focus of the survey should be determined. The article reviews Polish and foreign literature in terms of the proposed framework and methods for measuring the performance of the supply chain and the indicated categories (dimensions) of indicators. The authors approach the subject of evaluation of the performance of the supply chain in very different ways. Indicators are divided according to the level of the decision-making process: strategic, tactical, and operational. They are also divided into cost and non-cost or financial and non-financial ones. There are also approaches using the already well established methods and models. An example of this is the selection of perspectives according to the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) and the SCOR model.

AbstractThe aim of this study is to know the level of physical activity and motivational orientation based on gender, age and the type of sport practiced in students. The results showed that the level of practice of physical activity in students is medium-low, which is significantly higher in boys than in girls, and decreases significantly with increasing the age. In addition, collective sports practitioners have higher levels of physical activity than individual sports practitioners. Regarding motivational orientation, no significant differences were found based on gender, age and type of sport. However, boys showed higher values of ego orientation than girls. Furthermore, a positive and significant association is found between task orientation and physical activity level. The study was carried out to measure the existing motivational climate as perceived by the Subject Matter Specialists (SMSs) of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) under Assam Agricultural University (AAU). The study was conducted at the KVKs functioning under the administrative control of the Directorate of Extension Education, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, Assam. Motivational climate as perceived by SMSs was measured by MAO(C) scale developed by Pareek (1981). Findings revealed that the mean score of dependency climate motive (41.69) was the highest among the six motives, followed closely by control climate motive (40.84). These were followed by achievement climate motive (38.73), expert power climate motive (35.52), affiliation climate motive (33.29) and extension climate motive (32.87) in decreasing order of existing motivational climate strength. Hence it could be stated that an overall dependency-control climate existed in the KVKs under AAU, as perceived by the SMSs.

This study explores the factors that influence a student’s choice of major along with students’ perceptions of accounting classes and the accounting profession The results indicate that students are most strongly influenced in their choice of major by a genuine interest in the subject matter.  This finding is the same regardless of major and gender.  Other influential factors include availability of employment, starting pay, and the ability to interact with people.  The factor with the least amount of influence on selection of a major is the expected ease of earning a degree.

The editor of this series, Dr. S. Z. Levine, is to be congratulated on his perceptive selection of topics which are in need of review at this time, and for his wise choice of authors to take on these assignments. Such a group of reviews as are contained in this volume are essential for anyone who strives to maintain a broad grasp of the subject matter of pediatrics. The same well-balanced assortment of material which has characterized this series of reviews is maintained in the present volume. It is fortunate that there is so little duplication in the subjects treated in the several books now available each year containing reviews of topics in pediatrics.

This autobiography, published for the first time, describes the life and work of Helmut Simon (1922–2013), former constitutional judge and President of the Kirchentag, who described himself as an “outsider” and “lateral thinker”. Helmut Simon has recorded what he experienced against the background of contemporary history, put his impressions and experiences in order, given an account of his life and work, and drawn up a personal balance sheet while self-critically reviewing previous positions. The descriptions are interrupted by a series of – in part very personal – digressions and a selection of striking texts, the subject matter of which has occupied the author for several periods. The work is preceded by a detailed foreword by the authorised editors Dr. Peter Becker, a long-time companion, and Heide Simon, the second wife of Helmut Simon.
