Online Peer-to-peer Lending Decision Making: Model Development and Testing

We explored lenders' decision-making processes in online peer-to-peer (P2P) lending by drawing on trust theory and the valence framework to develop an integrated decisionmaking model, which we then tested empirically using data from a survey conducted with 474 online lenders in China. The results showed that initial trust and perceived benefit determined willingness to lend, and that the fear of borrower opportunism did not have a significant impact on this willingness. Initial trust increased willingness to lend both directly and indirectly, increased it by increasing perceived benefit. We have identified the specific features of online P2P lending and provided valuable insights for borrowers, lenders, and intermediaries.

This paper advocates the adoption of systemic thinking in decision-making processes in municipalities. Most importantly, in this epoch of managing in complex and thought-provoking business environment, decision making is one of the most important skills required by any manager to remain effective. The success of a municipality or any business hinges on how well decisions are taken and implemented. In this paper, I intend to scrutinize decision making processes at strategic management levels in the municipalities within the province of KwaZulu-Natal. In doing that, a mixed method approach of qualitative and quantitative techniques was adopted in gathering data from sixty-one municipalities within the province of KwaZulu-Natal. This was done in order to substantiate theoretical perspectives from different erudite scholars on the discourse of systemic thinking in decision making processes. This notion of systemic thinking is coined upon the universally used rational decision making process model. Thus, the conceptualization of rational decision-making model was also considered in this paper, the possibility of decision failure, the complexity of the municipality, and systemic thinking as the recommended option of dealing with complexity was explored. The results indicates that the theory that underpins the adoption of systemic thinking in dealing with complexity today’s business environment is relevant.

Most strategic decision-making (SDM) approaches advocate the importance of decision-making processes and response choices for obtaining effective outcomes. Modern decision-making support system (DMSS) technology is often also needed for complex SDM, with recent research calling for more integrative DMSS approaches. However, scholars tend to take disintegrated approaches and disagree on whether rational or political decision-making processes result in more effective decision outcomes. In this study, the authors examine these issues by first exploring some of the competing theoretical arguments for the process-choice-effectiveness relationship, and then test these relationships empirically using data from a crisis response training exercise using an intelligent agent-based DMSS. In contrast to prior research, findings indicate that rational decision processes are not effective in crisis contexts, and that political decision processes may negatively influence both response choice and decision effectiveness. These results offer empirical evidence to confirm prior unsupported arguments that response choice is an important mediating factor between the decision-making process and its effectiveness. The authors conclude with a discussion of the implications of these findings and the application of agent-based simulation DMSS technologies for academic research and practice.

In the context of the interconnected world of the information age, and demarcated by a virtual existence through the use of the Internet, decision-making has become even more dynamic. In an evolving era of virtuality, with special emphasis on the increasing role of mobile communication technology, it is indicated that decision-making has become fluid. As part of the phenomenon of fluid decision-making, not only is the evolutionary character of virtual connectivity acknowledged, but the ever-increasing and important role of mobile platforms is also emphasised. In a hermeneutical practical theology of lived spirituality, focusing on the praxis of everyday living, the possible role of spirituality in informing the fluid decision-making processes in a mobile virtual world was traced. A qualitatively inspired analysis, using data collected from various virtual forums, was proposed. In the description of these contours, special emphasis was placed on narrative-inspired biographical accents. The research made a contribution in terms of possible new articulations of the language of faith as embodied in fluid decision-making in a mobile virtual reality.

Peer-to-peer markets are especially suitable for the analysis of online ratings as they represent two-sided markets that match buyers to sellers and thus lead to reduced scope for opportunistic behavior. We decompose the online ratings by focusing on the customer’s decision-making process in a leading peer-to-peer ridesharing platform. Using data from the leading peer-to-peer ridesharing platform BlaBlaCar, we analyze 17,584 users registered between 2004 and 2014 and their online ratings focusing on the decomposition of the explicit determinants reflecting the variance of online ratings. We find clear evidence to suggest that a driver’s attitude towards music, pets, smoking, and conversation has a significantly positive influence on his received online ratings. However, we also show that the interaction of female drivers and their attitude towards pets has a significantly negative effect on average ratings.

PurposeDespite the emergence of peer-to-peer (P2P) lending in Malaysia, there is a knowledge gap on what drives the lending decision of P2P lending in the emerging Malaysian market. This research investigates how borrower's loan tenure, funding purpose, verified documents, accumulated transaction and repayment history, age, trustworthy and geographical resemblance affect likelihood of lending decision in P2P platform.Design/methodology/approachUsing snowball sampling, survey data was collected from 300 online banking users who were willing to invest in online P2P platform from different states in Malaysia (i.e. Selangor, Malacca, Johor and Negeri Sembilan). For estimation, regression analyses were estimated.FindingsThe findings suggest that borrower's loan tenure and borrower's age increase the probability of lending in online P2P platform, while funding purpose of credit card reduces the likelihood of lending in the P2P platform. The findings contribute to the signalling theory.Practical implicationsThe findings imply that borrowers need to concentrate on loan tenure and clearly indicate their age in the listing in order to increase the funding probability. Moreover, they are suggested not to submit listing for credit card as funding purpose.Originality/valueThis study is first in its nature about P2P lending in Malaysia and the possible factors that influence lending decisions in this new financing platform.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore investigative decision-making processes in the context of major crimes as experienced by the law enforcement agents.Design/methodology/approachEpisodic interviews were conducted with six agents from medium-sized police forces in the UK. Following the framework of naturalistic inquiry, qualitative content analysis took place with the assistance of Atlas.ti software. To ensure the validity of findings, the within method triangulation was preferred, by additionally analysing the interview transcripts with Alceste.FindingsFindings from this study revealed a variety of internal factors at play, shaping the decision-making course into an act of balancing various desired goals. Detectives appear to assess a situation based on their experiences confirming that the naturalistic decision-making model may assist in understanding investigative decision-making.Research limitations/implicationsDue to the busy schedule of law enforcement agents the number of participants was limited and availability difficult; therefore, this study can be thought of as a pilot study that will inspire researchers to use the same method for in-depth understanding of investigative decision-making.Practical implicationsResults captured the ill-defined goals in the police environment and provided ways of decreasing their impact on investigative decision-making thus should help detectives to understand their decision-making limitations and strengths.Social implicationsThis project will enhance the psychological understanding of investigative decision-making.Originality/valueThis project assists in understanding the psychological aspect of investigative decision-making during police duty and provides the opportunity to law enforcement agents to re-evaluate situations in order to improve the investigative decision-making process; while adds to existing literature.

Our paper develops a decision-making model of social shopping in franchising to understand impacts of various collaboration strategies on profits of a social intermediary, a franchisor, and a franchisee. Three decision variables are considered to make a daily deal promotion in a manner that results in optimal profits: the social intermediary's advertising expense, the franchisee's service quality expense, and the franchisor's financial assistance to the franchisee. The analysis shows that while system-wide collaboration generates more total profit for all three parties than the profits obtained when they seek to optimize their individual profit functions, the advantage of system-wide collaboration may depend on the parameter values of the profit function and collaboration cost. Since social shopping is just in the early stage of the business model development, most franchises and social intermediaries have not formed concrete collaboration strategies. Our model provides a methodology for different collaborative needs of the franchises and social intermediaries.
