Improving the environmental life cycle performance of buildings by focusing on the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions along the building life cycle is considered a crucial step in achieving global climate targets. This paper provides a systematic review and analysis of 75 residential case studies in humid subtropical and tropical climates. The study investigates GHG emissions across the building life cycle, i.e., it analyses both embodied and operational GHG emissions. Furthermore, the influence of various parameters, such as building location, typology, construction materials and energy performance, as well as methodological aspects are investigated. Through comparative analysis, the study identifies promising design strategies for reducing life cycle-related GHG emissions of buildings operating in subtropical and tropical climate zones. The results show that life cycle GHG emissions in the analysed studies are mostly dominated by operational emissions and are the highest for energy-intensive multi-family buildings. Buildings following low or net-zero energy performance targets show potential reductions of 50–80% for total life cycle GHG emissions, compared to buildings with conventional energy performance. Implementation of on-site photovoltaic (PV) systems provides the highest reduction potential for both operational and total life cycle GHG emissions, with potential reductions of 92% to 100% and 48% to 66%, respectively. Strategies related to increased use of timber and other bio-based materials present the highest potential for reduction of embodied GHG emissions, with reductions of 9% to 73%.

Environmental issues require a new manufacturing paradigm because the current mass production and mass consumption paradigm inevitably cause them. We have already proposed a new manufacturing paradigm called the “Post Mass Production Paradigm (PMPP)” that advocates sustainable production by decoupling economic growth from material and energy consumption. To realize PMPP, appropriate planning of a product life cycle (design of life cycle) is indispensable in addition to the traditional environmental conscious design methodologies. For supporting the design of a life cycle, this paper proposes a life-cycle simulation system that consists of a life-cycle simulator, an optimizer, a model editor, and knowledge bases. The simulation system evaluates product life cycles from an integrated view of environmental consciousness and economic profitability and optimizes the life cycles. A case study with the simulation system illustrates that the environmental impacts can be reduced drastically without decreasing corporate profits by appropriately combining maintenance, reuse and recycling, and by taking into consideration that optimized modular structures differ according to life-cycle options.

Abstract The increasing application of CAE has lead to the evolution of Concurrent Engineering — a philosophy that prescribes simultaneous consideration of the life-cycle design issues of a product. The Concurrent Engineering (CE) systems that have been developed so far have relied on knowledge bases and qualitative evaluations of a part’s manufacturability for feedback to the design engineer. This paper describes a method for developing quantitative indicators of manufacturability. Feature-based design and estimation of machining parameters are used for ascertaining a part’s manufacturing requirements. These requirements are then combined into indices which lead the designer to features that must be redesigned for improved manufacturability. This method is illustrated on a system for rotational machined parts: the Manufacturability Evaluation and Improvement System (MEIS).

Diadiplosis multifila was recently discovered feeding on Planococcus citri eggs in vineyards in the semi-arid northeast region of Brazil. The objective of the present paper was to study the biology of D. multifila in P. citri under constant temperatures of 22, 25, 28, and 31 °C. We evaluated its embryonic stage, egg viability, development period, survival of larva and pupa, longevity, average number of eggs, and sex ratio. D. multifila completed its life cycle in all temperatures except for 31 °C. The length of the embryonic period ranged from 4 to 7 days. The larval stage was longer at a temperature of 22 °C (8.6 days) and shorter at 28 °C (6.4). The pupal stage exhibited durations of 12.9, 10.4, and 8.2 days for temperatures of 22, 25, and 28 °C, respectively. The average viability in the larval stage was 97% and 83% in the pupal stage. The total life cycle took 16.7 (28 °C), 20 (25 °C), and 27 (22 °C) days to complete. The adults lived for approximately 2 days and the females produced on average 34, 25, and 19 eggs at temperatures of 22, 25, and 28 °C, respectively. The sex ratio varied from 0.46 to 0.54.

The scientifically substantiated principles of development of technology of operation of electric systems with traction loads by condition and minimum expenses during their life cycle for urban electric transport are developed. Saving quality criteria that determine resource conservation are generalized. It is proposed to expand the functions of tram wagon laboratories to measure the basic quality criteria. The scheme of expert system for analysis of the state of power supply devices and development of control effects in the analytical centers of control systems is developed. The scientifically grounded principles of the development of the technology of operation of electric systems with traction loads on the state and minimum expenses in the course of their life cycle, in particular the concept of maintenance of power supply devices on the basis of their diagnostics and monitoring, a complex automated system of diagnostics of the contact network and current collectors, means of improving quality scratching and reducing the wear of the contact wire, which collectively solves the problem of resource conservation and allows reducing operating costs 1.5–2 times. Generalized current quality criteria that determine resource conservation. It is established and experimentally confirmed that the basic criteria for the state of the contact network are contact pressing and the coefficients of reliability and economy of current flow. It is proposed to expand the functions in the field of measuring the basic criteria for servicing the contact network by state. The information technologies of an estimation of a condition of power supply devices during their operation on the basis of synthesis of two sources of information are offered: real-time diagnostics and simulation modeling. A generalized scheme of the expert system for analysis of the status of power supply devices and development of control effects in the analytical centers of control systems has been developed. Keywords: electric transport, traction substations, traction networks, diagnostics and operation, technologies, energy efficiency, resource saving.

the development in computer fields, especially in the software engineering, emerged the need to construct intelligence tool for automatic translation from design phase to coding phase, for producing the source code from the algorithm model represented in pseudo code, and execute it depending on the constructing expert system which reduces the cost, time and errors that may occur during the translation process, which has been built the knowledge base, inference engine, and the user interface. The knowledge bases consist of the facts and the rules for the automatic transition. The results are compared with a set of neural networks, which are Back propagation neural network, Cascade-Forward network, and Radial Basis Function network. The results showed the superiority of the expert system in automatic transition process speed, as well as easy to add, delete or modify process for rules or data of the pseudo code compared with previously mentioned neural networks.
