Anti-inflammatory activity of Argyreia nervosa and Coriandrum sativum leaf extracts in experimental animals

Aims: The present investigation was aimed at exploring the phytoconstituents using Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy and to evaluate antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the leaf extracts. Materials and Methods: The extracts were obtained sequentially with petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and water using soxhlet apparatus. The anti-inflammatory property of the identified compounds using GC- MS spectroscopy was evaluated in silico. The antioxidant activity was performed by DPPH and H2O2 method whereas anti-inflammatory study was carried out by HRBC membrane stabilization method. Terpenoids were found to be major constituents in petroleum ether extract while, phenols and flavonoids were predominantly found in ethyl acetate extract. Results and Discussion: The GC-MS analysis of the extract revealed six major molecules including Squalene, 19β, 28- epoxyleanan-3-ol and 2-tu-Butyl-5-chloromethyl-3-methyl-4-oxoimidazolidine-1-carboxylic acid. The ethyl acetate extract showed a significant antioxidant activity (P<0.01) in both DPPH method (70.87 %) and H2O2 method (73.58%) at 200 µg mL-1 . Increased membrane stabilization of petroleum ether extract was observed in the in vitro anti-inflammatory activity study. A strong relationship between the terpenoid content and anti-inflammatory activity was obtained from the correlation (0.971) and docking study. Conclusion: These results justify T. involucrata to be a rich source of terpenoids with potent antiinflammatory property.

Introduction: Green leafy vegetables are important sources of polyphenols and carotenoids which possess both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Aim: To study the anti-inflammatory activity of oxycarotenoid extracts isolated from coriander leaves (Coriandrumsativum) and curry leaves (Murraya koenigii) in carrageenan induced acute paw oedema in rats. Materials and Methods: Oxycarotenoid extracts were isolated from the coriander leaves (Coriandrum sativum) and curry leaves (Murraya koenigii) and they were assessed for anti-inflammatory activities by in-vivo methods. The in-vivo anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated in carrageenan induced acute paw oedema model. Indomethacin at a dose of 20 mg/Kg body weight was used as standard anti-inflammatory drug. Results: The results revealed that oxycarotenoids extracted from coriander leaves administered at a dose of 40 mg/kg body weight showed an inhibition of 53.33% whereas the oxycarotenoids extracted from curry leaves showed an inhibition of 60% at the sixth hour after carrageenan injection. The results are comparable with those of indomethacin (20 mg/Kg body weight) administered group which showed an inhibition of 55.53% Conclusion: These findings suggest that oxycarotenoid extracts isolated from leafy vegetables (coriander leaves and curry leaves) have significant anti-inflammatory activities.

Aims. Pterocarpus santalinoides is used in Beninese folk medicine for treatment of gastroenteritis. This study aims to compare the antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activity of the hydroalcoholic extracts of the leaves, trunk bark, and root. Materials and Methods. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated by the broth microdilution method on 06 bacterial strains including 03 wild-type strains (Escherichia. coli 0157H, Salmonella sp., and Staphylococcus aureus sp.) and 03 reference strains (E. coli ATCC 25922, S. aureus ATCC 29213, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853), whereas the anti-inflammatory activity was performed by the carrageenan-induced paw edema method on rats. The DPPH-free radical scavenging was used to determine the antioxidant activity. Results. The MICs of the leaf extracts varied from 6.25 to 25 mg/mL for all strains. The MICs of the stem bark extracts were 6.5 to 25 μg/mL for five strains (E. coli 0157H, S. aureus ATCC 25922, Salmonella sp., E. coli ATCC 25922, and P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853) and 3.125 mg/mL for S. aureus. Concerning the root extracts, the MICs varied from 12.5 to 50 mg/mL. The best anti-inflammatory power was obtained with the stem bark extract with the percentages of inhibition of 36.09%, 38.98%, and 39.50%. The DPPH test showed that the hydroethanolic extract of the 03 parts of P. santalinoides has a moderate antiradical power compared to the control which was quercetin. Conclusion. In view of the different pharmacological activity recorded, the extract of the leaves should be recommended to treat patients suffering from gastroenteriditis.

OBJECTIVE. The study substantiated the possibility of application of sodium hypochlorite for treatment of infected pancreatonecrosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS. The experimental study was conducted on 288 rats. Clinical research was carried out on 94 patients who were divided into two statistically homogenous groups. «Levomecol» ointment was used in the first group for sanation of omental bursae (lesser sac). The immobilized form of sodium hypochlorite was applied for the second group. RESULTS. Anti-inflammatory activity of immobilized form of sodium hypochlorite exceeded this activity in case of «Levomecol» application in 1,2-1,4 times. Anti-microbial activity was higher in 1,6-1,8 times at different terms of treatment of experimental animals. The proposed method of treatment of infected pancreatonecrosis allowed doctors to decrease the number of postoperative complications in patients on 11,2 % and lethality - on 9,2 %. CONCLUSIONS. It was stated that the application of immobilized forms of sodium hypochlorite for sanation of the omental bursae was pathogenically justified and efficient.

Inflammation represents an adaptive response generated by injuries or harmful stimuli. Natural remedies represent an interesting alternative to traditional therapies, involving several biochemical pathways. Besides, the valorization of agrochemical wastes nowadays seems to be a feasible way to reduce the health spending and improve the accessibility at bioactive natural compounds. In this context, the chemical composition of three Glycyrrhiza glabra L. (licorice) leaf extracts, obtained through maceration or ultrasound-assisted method (fresh and dried leaves) was investigated. A guided fractionation obtained three main components: pinocembrin, glabranin and licoflavanone. All the extracts showed similar antioxidant properties, evaluated by 2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) or 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) Diammonium Salt (ABTS) assay, while, among the isolated compounds, licoflavanone exhibited the best antioxidant activity. The anti-inflammatory activity of the extracts and the purified compounds was investigated in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 murine macrophages. Extract C and licoflavanone showed a good anti-inflammatory activity without affecting cell viability, as they decreased nitrite levels even when used at 12.5 μg/mL (p < 0.005) and 50 μM concentration (p < 0.001), respectively. Interestingly, licoflavanone markedly decreased pro-inflammatory cytokines and cyclooxygenase 2/inducible nitric oxide synthase (COX-2/iNOS) expression levels (p < 0.001). A modulation of nuclear factor kappa B/mitogen-activated protein kinases (NF-kB/MAPK) pathway underlay such behavior, highlighting the potential of this natural compound as a new scaffold in anti-inflammatory drug research.
