The article outlines difficulties related to the paradigm of cognition in security sciences, which have been generalised by asking about the paradigm that allows to study security of various entities and to obtain progress of knowledge about this fragment of reality. Then, a set of paradigms typical for the social sciences, disciplines: political and administrative sciences, international relations theory sub-discipline: security studies and management and quality sciences were analysed and evaluated using a system of hypothetical and assertion-deductive methods. The subject, time and spatial context of security of entities, the subject scope of security sciences and the ontological approach to the understanding of beings in the reality of security of entities were outlined. The usefulness of analysed and evaluated paradigms in cognition of security was assessed in this context. Finally, a complementary paradigm of cognition in security sciences was proposed and its usefulness in relation to multi-paradigmatic cognition was demonstrated.

AbstractMechanism-based explanations are gaining in popularity in the social sciences. Canadian political science has somewhat embraced these debates. Recent work has explicitly identified with mechanismic explanation and, at the same time, there is a point to be made about the compatibility of CPS's cannons with a mechanism-based understanding of causation. In this paper, we survey past and recent work aligned with this ontological approach. We demonstrate a heterogeneous engagement with the methodological literature regarding mechanisms and different understandings as well as uses of mechanisms in political analysis. This survey allows us to argue for the potential of mechanism-based explanations for CPS while also forcing us to advocate for a sober and discerning use of this approach.

This study was conducted to identify the level of frequency using of teaching aids among mathematics teachers. This study also aims to identify the mathematical teacher perceptions towards the use of teaching aids, restraints and challenges faced by them in the use of teaching aids. The respondents of this study consists of 70 teachers of mathematics from 20 primary schools in the District of Batang Padang, Perak. This study used a survey method that involves the review of quantitative and qualitative interpretation. The instrument used was a questionnaire. A set of questionnaires were distributed to the respondents to obtain the necessary information and data. All data were analyzed using computer software Statistical Package for Social Sciences SPSS version 22 ‘to get the frequency, percentage and mean. The results showed that the use of teaching aids in mathematics among teachers is high. In addition, the study also shows that the perception of teachers to use teaching aids are also positive. While the results of the analysis also shows that there are constraints and challenges faced by teachers in the use of teaching aids. A few suggestions are given to increase the use of teaching aids in the teaching of mathematics. Conclusions from the study reflects that the use of teaching aids is important for teachers to assist them in the process of teaching and learning. The study also demonstrates the use of teaching aids not only benefit the teachers, but they also have a major impact towards pupils.

This paper argues that the current productive and multidisciplinary study in new literacy/literacies in digital era has lead to a complex situation full of kaleidoscopic terms and concepts, thus is in need of further exploration. Based on a critical ontology-based modeling and 5W1H maxim, the author proposes a 5-Ps framework to deconstruct and re-examine new literacy/literacies from five perspectives: Platform, Participant, Potential, Position, and Praxis. It is expected that this framework can help people to analyze and understand new literacies in study of electronics, computer, information technology as well as social sciences.

University of Alberta: Professor J.G. Kemeny spent four days here, March 12 to 15, as a visiting lecturer for the Mathematical Association of America. He gave two colloquium talks on "Markov chains in probability theory" and public lectures on "New developments in the teaching of mathematics" and on "Mathematics in the Social Sciences". He was guest speaker at a dinner meeting of the Mathematics and Physics club, at which he gave a delightful popular talk on the way group theory might have originated, and he also addressed several groups of mathematics students. His visit was greatly appreciated.

Abstract. Factorial survey experiments are increasingly used in the social sciences to investigate behavioral intentions. The measurement of self-reported behavioral intentions with factorial survey experiments frequently assumes that the determinants of intended behavior affect actual behavior in a similar way. We critically investigate this fundamental assumption using the misdirected email technique. Student participants of a survey were randomly assigned to a field experiment or a survey experiment. The email informs the recipient about the reception of a scholarship with varying stakes (full-time vs. book) and recipient’s names (German vs. Arabic). In the survey experiment, respondents saw an image of the same email. This validation design ensured a high level of correspondence between units, settings, and treatments across both studies. Results reveal that while the frequencies of self-reported intentions and actual behavior deviate, treatments show similar relative effects. Hence, although further research on this topic is needed, this study suggests that determinants of behavior might be inferred from behavioral intentions measured with survey experiments.
