This paper argues that the current productive and multidisciplinary study in new literacy/literacies in digital era has lead to a complex situation full of kaleidoscopic terms and concepts, thus is in need of further exploration. Based on a critical ontology-based modeling and 5W1H maxim, the author proposes a 5-Ps framework to deconstruct and re-examine new literacy/literacies from five perspectives: Platform, Participant, Potential, Position, and Praxis. It is expected that this framework can help people to analyze and understand new literacies in study of electronics, computer, information technology as well as social sciences.

AbstractLiteracy is no longer single entity; there are several aspects of literacies, especially in the era of information technology and digital media today, so it is called multiliteracies. This article presents the results of research on multiliteracies practice products in the form of Islamic boarding school (pesantren) website. Applying the theoretical framework of the new literacy study approach, this research focuses on the context, patron, or sponsorship of multiliteracy practices, and santri responses through it. Data were collected through textual analysis, interviews, and observations at the Nuris Pesantren in Jember. The results showed that patrons of the pesantren multiliteracies practice that produced website were the kiai and the sons of the kiai. Literacy patrons or sponsors always color the content and cultivation of any web or multiliteracies product. Kiai pesantren holds positions as patron and sponsor of pesantren-based multiliteracy practices in the age of digital media technology. The kiai’s vision and thought have an influence on the practice and products of pesantren multiliteracies. The kiai serves as a model (patron) of literacy as well as a sponsor (supporting element) of multiliteracy practices. The kiai remains a “filter” of values for the santri and the community in the digital era.

This article reviews the scope and potential of research done using a biographical approach and the role that this approach adopts in giving voice to experiences lived by the subjects. Special emphasis is placed on the use of narratives to construct life stories, histories and testimonies, incorporating elements for a discussion about their use and enhancement as an approach for research and intervention. This article is written from an interdisciplinary perspective, recognizing the strengths of this approach that can be applied to diverse disciplines within social sciences, humanities and health sciences. This paper analyzes the trends that have influenced in studies from a biographical approach, considering historical and epistemological aspects. This is particularly relevant for disciplines related to human care, such as Nursing or Social Work that deal with narratives of participants who have faced situations of pain or illness. The narrative-biographical approach allows us to retrieve these histories and to contribute to the memories of people willing to narrate their experiences. The article concludes by examining the contemporary uses of this approach both in research and in social interventions. Current challenges related to this approach are discussed and also the possibility of combining it with multimedia devices and the use of information technology.

In the 21st century, some factors, such as the awareness of multiculturalism, the preservation of local culture and the recognition of national cultural heritage, have led to the need for a new literacy skill called cultural heritage literacy. This study aimed to draw attention to the concept of cultural heritage literacy, defining the competencies of this literacy and investigating these competencies among academics from the humanities and social sciences at Hacettepe University Faculty of Letters, Turkey. Cultural heritage information needs and the information behaviours of academics were found to have differences in practices and perceptions across age, gender, status and subject disciplines. Within the scope of the study, a questionnaire with 30 questions was given to 114 academics from the humanities and social sciences at Hacettepe University Faculty of Letters, Turkey. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics and a chi-square test. The findings show that most of the academics reported having strong cultural heritage literacy abilities. There are statistically significant correlations between participants’ demographic features and cultural heritage literacy. It is expected that this study will contribute to the professionals of cultural heritage institutions. By considering cultural heritage literacy skills, professionals of cultural heritage institutions can develop new information services for cultural-heritage literate people.

Abstract Memes as online graphic semiotic resources have developed into a globalized genre and a cultural form. The vernacularization of this global cultural form on Chinese social media is Biaoqing (literally, ‘facial expression’). Biaoqing is a phenomenon and a genre engendered by the development of information technology and growing accessibility to the internet. The most prominent features of Biaoqing on Chinese social media (cute, mischievous, decadent, dirty, violent) are spawned by and therefore reflect the structure of society. The ludic nature of Biaoqing enables them to serve as resources for new forms of communication, potential of reshaping existing social norms, the landscape of online culture, and culture and society at large. The results of this contribution constitute an invitation for a reimagination of the role of graphic semiotic signs and digital infrastructures in society, and a rethinking of theories for sociolinguistic research in a digital era.

Abstract: The Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia released data that stated that almost 95% of waqf assets had not been used optimally. One reason is that there are only a few waqf management institutions that manage waqf property professionally and productively. Baitulmaal Munzalan Indonesia Foundation is present as one of the institutions engaged in zakat, infāq, alms, and waqf, as well as collaborating for the economic empowerment of the people. Having only been established for two years, BMI was entrusted with managing cash waqf amounting to Rp. 2,993,050,577.64 and has been distributed in the amount of Rp. 535,414,900.00 in 2018. This paper uses the type of field research and data collection techniques through interviews, documentation, and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). There are three research results in this paper. First, the Gerakan Wakaf Produktif in BMI consists of five programs, namely cash waqf, waqf asset waqf, profession waqf, benefit waqf, and waqf transfer of rights. Second, the management of cash waqf by BMI starts from planning the waqf-based infrastructure, determining the number of funds needed, and campaigning for it. The cash waqf funds collected are then used to buy raw materials used to build waqf based infrastructure. Third, BMI uses information technology in three ways, starting with collecting and managing cash waqf and its accountability report. The information technology it uses is social media, websites, and contact persons via mobile phones.
