I examined publication trends for The Canadian Field-Naturalist (CFN) between 1980 and 2015 to determine whether a general decrease in natural history studies has been affecting CFN. I also establish a baseline of the types of authors that publish in CFN, and the types of studies that are typically published. Fewer but longer articles are being published every year. More authors per article with greater collaboration are publishing every year. The majority of authors are Canadian, but a large number of authors are from the USA. The majority of studies focus on vertebrates, and most of these focus on mammals, followed by birds, and then fish. Articles on basic biology are most common, although articles on conservation and species’ geographic ranges are also common. CFN remains an important outlet for basic biology and conservation studies, and despite the decreasing trends in the number of articles published per year, CFN will likely remain a keystone publication for natural history in Canada.

Modern sweet corn is distinguished from other vegetable corns by the presence of one or more recessive alleles within the maize endosperm starch synthesis pathway. This results in reduced starch content and increased sugar concentration when consumed fresh. Fresh sweet corn originated in the USA and has since been introduced in countries around the World with increasing popularity as a favored vegetable choice. Several reviews have been published recently on endosperm genetics, breeding, and physiology that focus on the basic biology and uses in the US. However, new questions concerning sustainability, environmental care, and climate change, along with the introduction of sweet corn in other countries have produced a variety of new uses and research activities. This review is a summary of the sweet corn research published during the five years preceding 2021.

AbstractA recent report on long-term dietary mannose supplementation in phosphomannomutase 2 deficiency (PMM2-CDG) claimed improved glycosylation and called for double-blind randomized study of the dietary supplement in PMM2-CDG patients. A lack of efficacy of short-term mannose supplementation in multiple prior reports challenge this study’s conclusions. Additionally, some CDG types have previously been reported to demonstrate spontaneous improvement in glycosylated biomarkers, including transferrin. We have likewise observed improvements in transferrin glycosylation without mannose supplementation. This observation questions the reliability of transferrin as a therapeutic outcome measure in clinical trials for PMM2-CDG. We are concerned that renewed focus on mannose therapy in PMM2-CDG will detract from clinical trials of more promising therapies. Approaches to increase efficiency of clinical trials and ultimately improve patients’ lives requires prospective natural history studies and identification of reliable biomarkers linked to clinical outcomes in CDG. Collaborations with patients and families are essential to identifying meaningful study outcomes.

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is one of the common adverse drug reactions and the leading cause of drug development attritions, black box warnings, and post-marketing withdrawals. Current biomarkers are suboptimal in detecting DILI and predicting its outcome. This study aimed to quantitatively and qualitatively investigate the research trends on DILI biomarkers using bibliometric analysis. All relevant publications were extracted from the Web of Science database. An online analysis platform of literature metrology, bibliographic item co-occurrence matrix builder, and CiteSpace software were used to analyze the publication trends. CitNetExplorer was used to construct direct citation networks and VOSviewer was used to analyze the keywords and research hotspots. We found a total of 485 publications related to DILI biomarkers published from 1991 to 2020. Toxicological Sciences had been the most popular journal in this field over the past 30 years. The USA maintained a top position worldwide and provided a pivotal influence, followed by China. Among all the institutions, the University of Liverpool was regarded as a leader for research collaboration. Moreover, Professors Paul B. Watkins and Tsuyoshi Yokoi made great achievements in topic area. We analyzed the citation networks and keywords, therefore identified five and six research hotspot clusters, respectively. We considered the publication information regarding different countries/regions, organizations, authors, journals, et al. by summarizing the literature on DILI biomarkers over the past 30 years. Notably, the subject of DILI biomarkers is an active area of research. In addition, the investigation and discovery of novel promising biomarkers such as microRNAs, keratin18, and bile acids will be future developing hotspots.

In this article we want to discuss the potential of lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT) imaging and propose a systematic approach to DVT management based on a DVT classification of the lower extremity; the LET classification. Identifying and reporting DVT more systematically allows for accurate stratification for initial patient care, future clinical trials and appropriate descriptions for natural history studies.

Background: With the intention to quantify the importance of a medical journal, the Impact Factor (IF) was introduced. It has become a de facto fictive rating instrument of the importance of medical journals. Also, it is often used to assess the value of the individual publications within the specific journal. The aim of the present study was to analyze publication trends over 20 years in five high-ranked anesthesiology journals. Methods: The Medline (NCBI) database PubMed was used for analysis which was restricted to the following journals: 1. Anesthesiology; 2. British Journal of Anaesthesia; 3. Journal of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology; 4. Anesthesia & Analgesia; and 5. Anaesthesia. Specific publication parameters (IFs, number of pages and authors, etc.) were retrieved using the PubMed download function and imported into Microsoft Excel for further analysis. Results: The mean IF of the five journals analyzed increased significantly within the study period (1991 vs. 2010; +61.81%). However, the absolute number of case reports decreased significantly by 54.7% since 1991. The journals Br J Anaesth (12.2%), J Neurosurg Anesthesiol (51.9%), and Anesth Analg (57.2%) showed significant increases in the number of publications per year. The mean number of authors increased significantly in all the journals from 1991 to 2010 (3.0 vs. 4.3; +43.3%). Conclusions: The IF, as well as the number of articles per year and the number of authors per article, increased significantly. In contrast, the number of pages per article remained comparable during the period analyzed.

C-PLGD is a rare autosomal recessive multisystem disorder of the fibrinolytic system with a diverse spectrum of clinical manifestations, and is underdiagnosed and difficult to treat. Caused by mutations in thePLGgene, C-PLGD is characterized by extravascular fibrinous deposits on mucous membranes such as the conjunctiva, gingiva, linings of airways and genitourinary tract. The abnormal accumulation or growth of fibrin-rich pseudomembranous lesions have been termed ligneous for their "woody" appearance, and often result in tissue injury and/or organ dysfunction in C-PLGD patients. We present here the results of an exhaustive MEDLINE literature database review undertaken with the PubMed search engine using the key words; 'plasminogen deficiency,' 'hypoplasminogenemia' and 'ligneous conjunctivitis'. Objective:The goal of this review was 1) to achieve a better understanding of the type and prevalence of clinical manifestations of C-PLGD and their outcomes, and 2) to evaluate whether a relationship exists between endogenous plasminogen activity levels and disease manifestations in C-PLGD patients. Methodology: A MEDLINE literature search was conducted by three independent investigators. Publications containing the key words 'plasminogen deficiency,' 'hypoplasminogenemia' and/or 'ligneous conjunctivitis' and reporting human clinical information were selected. Patients' age, sex, endogenous plasminogen levels, and clinical manifestations were tabulated. Results: The search retrieved 414 total citations, and 130 papers with relevant human clinical data were identified for full-length text review. From these, 301 unique C-PLGD patients (237 pediatric and 64 adults) were found to be reported over an 80-year period (from 1957 to 2017) and presented the following outcomes and most common and/or serious clinical manifestations: ligneous conjunctivitis (255 cases), ligneous periodontitis (71 cases), tracheobronchial obstructions (53 cases), hydrocephalus (42 cases), other corneal lesion (15 cases), ligneous vaginitis (24 cases), blindness (6 cases), and death (10 cases). Differences in disease seriousness and prevalence were observed between pediatric and adult patient populations (Table1). Of note, death or hydrocephalus were reported only in pediatric patients. Historical information indicated that 62% of the 301 reported patients were females and 36% males, while 2% of them did not have their gender disclosed. The median age of reported onset of symptoms (and/or diagnosis) was 1 year old for the 176 patients with available data. Of the 130 papers retained and analyzed, 2 studies (Klammt et. al. Thromb Haemost 2011; Tefs et. al. Blood 2006) were selected for additional in-depth analysis. These studies included a subset of 58 C-PLGD patients whose clinical, molecular and plasminogen activity data were available and reliably reported. These patients had a spectrum of plasminogen activity level ranging from 2% to 59% and presented the main following clinical manifestations: ligneous conjunctivitis (52/58), ligneous periodontitis (16/58), tracheobronchial involvement (14/58), ligneous vaginitis (6/58), and hydrocephalus (4/58) (Table 2). Out of this 58-patient cohort, 26 reported a single lesion and had an average plasminogen activity level of 22% while the 32 remaining had 2 or more lesions and an average activity level of 20%, indicating that the level of plasminogen activity may not correlate with the clinical manifestations burden/seriousness. Conclusion:This comprehensive review confirmed that the heterogeneity challenges in clinical evaluation and the overall rarity of C-PLGD can contribute to delayed diagnosis, treatment variability and less than optimal outcomes. With lack of natural history studies or reports of C-PLGD, the data described here can be used to highlight the seriousness of long-term morbidity, promote early and effective management of C-PLGD, and support the ongoing development of novel plasminogen replacement therapy to address the primary underlying drivers of morbidity in C-PLGD. The implementation of natural history studies may play an important role in addressing the knowledge gap in phenotypic expression and long-term impact of C-PLGD on the quality of life of impacted patients. Francis William Rogers Brambell was born on 25 February 1901 at Combridge House, Sandycove, Co. Dublin. His family tree is best set out in diagram (see the table on the next page). As he said himself, he could not remember a time when natural history was not his chief interest, nor did he know who inspired this interest, unless it was his maternal grandfather, F. W. Rogers, who certainly encouraged it. Rock pools on the shore, the rubbish brought in by fishing boats, insects, birds and other animals absorbed much of his attention after he was five or six years old. When Brambell was eleven T. P. Le Fanu introduced him to R. M. Barrington of Fassaroe, whose influence was probably decisive in developing his bent for natural history. Brambell went with Barrington and his children on ornithological expeditions, had the free run of Barrington’s collection of bird skins, and through him got to know most of the Irish naturalists of the time. He was, Brambell says, a grand field naturalist with an extraordinary gift for inspiring young people. At thirteen Brambell started seriously collecting bird skins. He never, he says, ever had any encouragement in biology or any other branch of science from his school.
