This study examined effects of business process reengineering (BRP) on organisational performance in the food and beverage industry in Nigeria. The study adopted survey research design and multistage sampling methods. It utilised primary data generated thorugh a  questionnaire for the research. Multiple regression analysis was employed to analyse the data. On the hypothesis one, the findings showed that organisational resources and process function have negative and insignificant effect on competitive advantage but innovative thinking has a positive and significant effect on competitive advantage. On the hypothesis two, all the components of business process reengineering (organizational resources, innovative thinking and process function) have positive and significant effect on operational performance. Thus, the study concluded when organizational resources, innovative thinking and process function are combined together as business process reengineering components, they enhance organizational performance in the food and beverages industry in Nigeria. The study suggested that Food and Beverages firms should continue to formulate policies that will encourage innovative ideas from all stakeholders of the organizations in order to continue to achieve competitive advantage and experience sound operational performance. The process function of the organization should continue to be designed and redesigned so that they enjoy smooth operational performance, obtain new resources and upgrade the existing ones so that the firms could achieve competitive advantage. The process function and organization resources need to be evaluated and appraised from time to time to know or detect any lapses that may hinder the firms from attaining their short and long term business goals.

This survey is focused on the investigation of the concept of the corporate trade-off hypothesis (CTH), which suggests that firms adjust business risk and financial leverage to obtain the desirable amount of total systematic risk. The empirical tests were carried on a sample of 319 firms from the food and beverage manufacturing sector that covered the period 2008-2016. Prior empirical research has examined the relationship between business and financial leverage using market data. The aim of this research was to explore this relationship using accounting data. The use of accounting data made it possible to include unlisted companies in our survey. The results show that there is an inverse relationship between the variables of operating beta and mean debt ratio, which measure business risk and financial leverage respectively. Consequently, the empirical findings support the hypothesis that the corporate trade-off hypothesis is operative, for the cluster of food and beverage manufacturing companies.

This study evaluates the impact of Chile’s innovative law on Food Labeling and Advertising, enacted in June 2016, on employment and real wages and profit margins for the food and beverage manufacturing sectors in the 2016–2019 period, using unique company-specific monthly data from Chile’s tax collection agency (measuring aggregate employment, real wages, average size of firms, and gross profit margins of the food and beverage manufacturing sector). Interrupted-time series analyses (ITSA) on administrative data from tax-paying firms was used and compared to synthetic control groups of sectors not affected by the regulations. ITSA results show no effect on aggregate employment nor on the average size of the firms, while they show negligible effects on real wages and gross margin of profits (as proportion of total sales), after the first two stages of the implementation (36 months), despite significant decreases in consumption in certain categories (sugar-sweetened beverages, breakfast cereals, etc.). Despite the large declines found in purchases of unhealthy foods, employment did not change and impacts on other economic outcomes were small. Though Chile’s law, is peculiar there is no reason to believe that if similar regulations were adopted elsewhere, they would have different results.

Innovation and Human Resource Management: the Greek ExperienceThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the pathways leading from innovation to organisational performance by using structural equation modelling. Specifically, we used this analytical tool to test a research framework that is constituted by a set of causal relationships between organisational contingencies, innovation, HRM policies (resourcing, training, rewards, relations), HRM outcomes (skills, attitudes, behaviour), and organisational performance. Employing data from organisations operating in the Greek manufacturing sector, results indicate that the impact of innovation on organisational performance is positive and mediated through HRM policies and HRM outcomes, and moderated by organisational context (management style, organisational culture).
