Threats can trigger incidents in information systems (IS) causing damage or intangible material loss to assets. A good selection of safeguards is critical for reducing risks caused by threats. This paper deals with the selection of failure transmission, preventive and palliative safeguards that minimize the maximum risk of an IS for a specified budget. We assume that all the elements in the IS are valuated using a linguistic scale, which is capable of accounting for imprecision and/or vagueness concerning the inputs. Trapezoidal fuzzy numbers are associated with these linguistic terms, and risk analysis and management is consequently based on trapezoidal fuzzy number arithmetic. We model and solve the respective fuzzy optimization problem by means of the simulated annealing metaheuristic and give an example to illustrate the safeguard selection process.

In this paper we discuss two approaches to bring a balance between effectiveness and efficiency while solving a multiobjective programming problem with fuzzy objective functions. To convert the original fuzzy optimization problem into deterministic terms, the first approach makes use of the Nearest Interval Approximation Operator (Approximation approach) for fuzzy numbers and the second one takes advantage of an Embedding Theorem for fuzzy numbers (Equivalence approach). The resulting optimization problem related to the first approach is handled via Karush- Kuhn-Tucker like conditions for Pareto Optimality obtained for the resulting interval optimization problem. A Galerkin like scheme is used to tackle the deterministic counterpart associated to the second approach. Our approaches enable both faithful representation of reality and computational tractability. They are thus in sharp contrast with many existing methods that are either effective or efficient but not both. Numerical examples are also supplemented for the sake of illustration.

AbstractThe fixed order quantity model of inventory management system is used in the deterministic part. Several elements of inventory cost, such as ordering cost, transportation and storing costs, frozen capital cost, as well as extra rebates, are taken into account in the model. Then the fuzzy optimization problem for the total cost function is formulated within the space of Ordered Fuzzy Numbers when all variables of the model are fuzzy. After the choice of a particular defuzzification functional an appropriate theorem is formulated which gives the solution of the problem.


The quality of food is associated with a set of properties and characteristics that can be considered from its chemical and nutritional physical composition that have the ability to meet the needs of the consumer. The paper aims to evaluate the application of fuzzy logic in the evaluation and classification of the selection of pecans in the post harvest process using tests and instruments that determine their best quality. Fuzzy logic has proven to be very effective with matlab/simulink to develop and simulate the entire system, through an appropriate choice of rules and membership functions and applying the Mamdani method to defuzzification the results considering they are positive.

In this paper application of optimization problem has been introduced which belong to fuzzy environment. An attempt has been taken to find out a suitable option in order to obtain the optimum solutions of optimization problems in fuzzy environment. Optimum solutions of the proposed optimization problem computed by using three methods, such as Bellman-Zadeh’s method, Zimmerman’s Method, and Fuzzy Version of Simplex method, are compared to each other. In support of that the three algorithms of the above three methods have been reviewed. However, the main objective of this paper is to focus on the appropriate method and how to achieve good enough or optimum solution of linear programming using triangular fuzzy numbers with equal widths because of complex and undefined situations in our daily life. The paper presents a multi-criteria optimization approach to modeling negotiation process. The negotiation process is modeled as a special multi-criteria problem. The method for finding solutions is the interactive selection process of some proposals. The parties shall submit their proposals on the subjects of the negotiations. These proposals are parameters of the multi-criteria optimization problem. Selection of solutions is accomplished by solving the optimization problem with parameters that define the aspirations of each party involved in the negotiations. Finally, evaluation of the solutions obtained by the parties is made.

Mosque architectural design is based on Islamic culture as an approach to objects and products from the Islamic community by looking at their suitability and values and basic principles of Islam that explore more creative and innovative ideas. The purpose of this system is to help the team and the community in seeing the best mosque in the top order so that the system can be used as a reference for the team and the community. The variables used in the selection of modern mosques include facilities and infrastructure, building structure, roof structure, mosque area, level of security and facilities. The system model used is a fuzzy promethee model that is used for the modern mosque selection process. Fuzzy inference assessment is used to determine the value of each variable so that the value remains at normal limits. Fuzzy values will then be included in promethee assessment aspects. The highest promethee ranking results will be made a priority for the best mosque ranking. This fuzzy inference system and promethee system can help the management team and the community in determining the selection of modern mosques in aceh in accordance with modern mosque architecture. AbstractBalanced sampling is a random method for sample selection, the use of which is preferable when auxiliary information is available for all units of a population. However, implementing balanced sampling can be a challenging task, and this is due in part to the computational efforts required and the necessity to respect balancing constraints and inclusion probabilities. In the present paper, a new algorithm for selecting balanced samples is proposed. This method is inspired by simulated annealing algorithms, as a balanced sample selection can be interpreted as an optimization problem. A set of simulation experiments and an example using real data shows the efficiency and the accuracy of the proposed algorithm.

The selection of advanced manufacturing technologies (AMTs) is an essential yet complex decision that requires careful consideration of various performance criteria. In real-world applications, there are cases that observations are difficult to measure precisely, observations are represented as linguistic terms, or the data need to be estimated. Since the growth of engineering sciences has been the key reason for the increased utilization of AMTs, this paper develops a fuzzy network data envelopment analysis (DEA) to the selection of AMT alternatives considering multiple decision-makers (DMs) and weight restrictions when the input and output data are represented as fuzzy numbers. By viewing the multiple DMs as a network one, the data provided by each DM can then be taken into account in evaluating the overall performances of AMT alternatives. In the solution process, we obtain the overall and DMs efficiency scores of each AMT alternative at the same time, and a relationship in which the former is a weighted average of the latter is also derived. Since the final evaluation results of AMTs are fuzzy numbers, a ranking procedure is employed to determine the most preferred one. An example is used to illustrate the applicability of the proposed methodology.

The ability to measure privacy accurately and consistently is key in the development of new privacy protections. However, recent studies have uncovered weaknesses in existing privacy metrics, as well as weaknesses caused by the use of only a single privacy metric. Metrics suites, or combinations of privacy metrics, are a promising mechanism to alleviate these weaknesses, if we can solve two open problems: which metrics should be combined and how. In this article, we tackle the first problem, i.e., the selection of metrics for strong metrics suites, by formulating it as a knapsack optimization problem with both single and multiple objectives. Because solving this problem exactly is difficult due to the large number of combinations and many qualities/objectives that need to be evaluated for each metrics suite, we apply 16 existing evolutionary and metaheuristic optimization algorithms. We solve the optimization problem for three privacy application domains: genomic privacy, graph privacy, and vehicular communications privacy. We find that the resulting metrics suites have better properties, i.e., higher monotonicity, diversity, evenness, and shared value range, than previously proposed metrics suites.
