In this study, different eggplant scion genotypes were grafted onto different eggplant rootstock genotypes in order to assess the plant growth, development, and fruit yield of eggplant plants based on the physiological and morphological response mechanisms. The experiment was conducted at the vegetable research field plot on the campus at Faculty of Agriculture, University of Erciyes, Kayseri-Turkey. The field experiment was carried out to determine plant growth, shoot and root fresh and dry biomasses, plant height, total leaf area, leaf chlorophyll index (SPAD), rootstock and scion stem diameter, number of fruits per plant, total fruit yield, fruit dry matter, fruit diameter and length, total seed yield, and thousand seed weight. Two eggplant cultivars (Topan and Pala) were grafted onto two different eggplant rootstock genotypes (Hawk and K?ksal F1), while non-grafted scion genotypes were used as control plants. The experiment was laid in a randomized completely block design (RCBD) containing three replications. The results indicated that between grafted and non-grafted plants significant (P<0.001) differences were observed in shoot and root fresh and dry biomasses, plant height, total leaf area, leaf chlorophyll index (SPAD), rootstock and scion stem diameter, number of fruits per plant, total fruit yield, fruit dry matter, fruit diameter and length, total seed yield, and thousand seed weight. The rootstocks utilized have influenced the vigour of the grafted plants. The ?Pala? grafted on the rootstock ?K?ksal F1? registered 61.91% increment in shoot fresh biomass and 49.04% increment in root fresh biomass in comparison to the non-grafted plants. Grafting influenced plant height which reached values of roughly 1.0 m, leaf are resulting in values of 5645.04 cm2 plant-1, and SPAD resulting in values of 47.48 at ?Pala/K?ksal F1? graft combination in comparison to the non-grafted plants. The grafting combinations also influenced the productivity of plants as compare to non-grafted plants. The significantly highest fruit yield obtained from ?Pala/K?ksal F1? graft combination was of 4711.89 g plant-1, followed by ?Topan/K?ksal F1? graft combination with 3834.54 g plant-1. ?Pala? was produced 11.49 number of fruits per plant when grafted on the ?K?ksal F1? rootstock and 8.46 number of fruits per plant when grafted on the ?Hawk? rootstock. Regarding seed yield, ?Pala? grafted on the rootstock ?K?ksal F1? registered 72.03% increment in total seed yield in comparison to the non-grafted plants. Overall, the eggplant rootstock genotypes ?K?ksal F1? showed a better performance shoot and root fresh and dry biomasses, plant height, total leaf area, leaf chlorophyll index (SPAD), rootstock and scion stem diameter, number of fruits per plant, total fruit yield, fruit dry matter, fruit diameter and length, total seed yield, and thousand seed weight as compared to non-grafted plants.

An experiment was conducted at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana during 2015 and 2016 to study the effect of priming, different seed rate on growth and seed yield of soybean planted under bed and flat method. The study was planned in factorial split plot design, keeping two planting techniques (flat sowing and bed sowing) and two seed priming treatments ( non primed seeds and 100 ppm GA3 primed seeds) in main plot and three seed levels ( 50, 62.5 and 75 kg ha-1) in sub plot. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of seed priming on growth and productivity under different planting techniques with the use of varying seed rates. The results revealed that growth attributes viz. emergence count, plant height, dry matter accumulation, leaf area index and photosynthetic active radiation interception (%) was significantly higher under bed planting technique as compared to flat sowing method. The pooled seed yield was increased by 15.6 % in bed planted soybean crop as compared to flat planted crop. Soybean seeds primed with 100 ppm GA3 recorded significant results in all the growth parameters. Primed seed recorded increase in yield 15.3 % than non primed seeds. Seed rate of 62.5 kg ha-1 recorded significantly higher emergence count, plant height, dry matter accumulation, leaf area index and photosynthetic active radiation interception (%) which was statistically similar in results with 75 kg ha-1 seed rate in both the two years. Pooled seed yield of 62.5 kg ha-1seed rate was 4.61 % higher than 75 kg ha-1 and 12.6 % than 50 kg ha-1 seed rate.

An evaluation of establishment techniques and rootstocks for ‘Chambourcin’ hybrid grape (Vitis sp.) was conducted 2009–12. Our objective was to evaluate four establishment methods and their interactions with grafted and ungrafted vines in terms of vine morphology and early fruit production under southwest Missouri conditions. The study was established in May 2009, as a factorial experiment comparing four establishment methods (open-trained without protection—two shoots, grow tube protected—two shoots, paperboard carton protected—two shoots, and fan-trained without protection—six shoots) across two vine types (own-rooted and grafted to ‘Couderc 3309’ hybrid grape rootstock). All vines in four of 12 field replications were destructively harvested near the conclusion of the first growing season, with leaf area and total vine dry matter determined. In years 3 and 4, yield, fruit composition, and vegetative growth were determined from the eight remaining replications. The fan training method increased leaf area and total vine dry matter compared with the other methods, but none of the establishment techniques affected fruit yield. Trunks that were tube protected had longer internodes, smaller diameter, and less dry matter, whereas both protection devices reduced glyphosate injury. Vine type (grafted and ungrafted) did not impact total leaf area or dry weight during the establishment year, but grafted vines had increased trunk and root shank dry weights compared with own-rooted vines. Grafted vines produced greater fruit yield in 2012. The fan training method required more labor to execute; although it was successful at increasing leaf area and root dry weight, it increased susceptibility to glyphosate injury and did not promote increased precocity or early fruit yield.

<p>No semiárido a ocorrência de longos períodos de estiagem vem tornado a irrigação uma pratica indispensável para exploração agrícola. Desta forma objetivou-se, com esta pesquisa, avaliar o crescimento e a produção de do algodoeiro cv. BRS Jady irrigado com águas de distintos níveis de salinidades e doses de matéria orgânica. O experimento foi conduzido utilizando-se um Neossolo Regolítico Eutrófico de textura franco arenosa no município de Campina Grande-PB. Adotou-se o delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, em esquema fatorial 4 x 4, com três repetições, cujos os tratamentos resultaram da combinação de quatro níveis de condutividade elétrica da água (CEa) (1,7; 3,4; 5,1 e 6,8 dS m<sup>-1</sup>) e quatro doses de matéria orgânica (0; 2,5; 3,5 e 4,5% em base do volume do solo). A irrigação com água salina de CE a partir 1,7 dS m<sup>-1</sup> afetou negativamente o crescimento e a produção do algodoeiro cv. BRS Jady, provocando reduções no diâmetro de caule, altura de planta, área foliar, fitomassa seca total, massa de algodão em pluma, massa total de sementes e rendimento de fibra. A adubação orgânica com doses crescentes promoveu aumento na altura de plantas, área foliar e massa total de sementes do algodoeiro cv. BRS Jady. Houve interação entre os fatores aguas salinas e doses de matéria orgânica para diâmetro caulinar, fitomassa seca total e massa de algodão em pluma, sendo os maiores valores obtidos na das doses de 3,5 e 4,5% de matéria orgânica.</p><p align="center"><strong><em>Organic fertilization and waters of different salin levels in the cultivation of colored fiber cotton</em></strong></p><p><strong>Abstract</strong><strong>: </strong>In the semiarid the occurrence of long periods of drought has made irrigation an indispensable practice for agricultural exploration. The objective of this research was to evaluate the growth and yield of cotton cv. BRS Jady irrigated with waters of different levels of salinities and doses of organic matter. The experiment was conducted using a sandy loam texture Eutrophic Neolithic in the municipality of Campina Grande-PB. A randomized complete block design was used in a 4 x 4 factorial scheme with three replications, the treatments of which were the result of the combination of four levels of electrical conductivity (ECw, 1.7, 3.4, 5.1 And 6.8 dS m<sup>-1</sup>) and four doses of organic matter (0, 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5% on the basis of soil volume). Irrigation with EC saline water from 1.7 dS m<sup>-1</sup> negatively affected the growth and yield of cotton cv. BRS Jady, causing reductions in stem diameter, plant height, leaf area, total dry matter, feathered cotton mass, total seed mass and fiber yield. Organic fertilization with increasing doses promoted increase in plant height, leaf area and total seed mass of cotton cv. BRS Jady. There was interaction between saltwater factors and organic matter doses for shoot diameter, total dry matter and cotton mass in feathers, the highest values being obtained in the 3.5 and 4.5% organic matter doses.</p>

The experiment was conducted at the experimental site of Agronomy Department, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU), Salna, Gazipur during the period from January to June 2011 to evaluate twenty selected soybean genotypes in respect of growth, dry matter production and yield. Genotypic variations in plant height, leaf area index, dry matter and its distribution, crop growth rate and seed yield were observed. The plant height ranged from 40.33 to 63.17 cm, leaf area index varied from 3.01 to 8.13 at 75 days after emergence, total dry matter ranged from 12.25 to 24.71 g per plant at 90 days after emergence (DAE). The seed yield ranged from 1745 to 3640 kg per hectare. The genotypes BGM 02093, BD 2329, BD 2340, BD 2336, Galarsum, BD 2331 and G00015 yielded 3825, 3447, 3573, 3737, 3115, 3542 and 3762 kg per hectare, respectively and gave higher than others contributed by higher crop growth rate with maximum number of filled pods. Seed yield of soybean was positively related to total dry matter at 45 DAE (Y = 632.19 + 659.31X, R2= 0.46) and 60 DAE (Y= 95.335 + 405.53X, R2 = 0.48). O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a emergência de plântulas e a morfofisiologia de mudas de mama-cadela (Brosimum gaudichaudii Trécul) produzidas a partir de sementes de diferentes tamanhos. Foram determinadas a porcentagem de emergência de plântulas e as características morfofisiológicas das mudas (altura, diâmetro do colo, índice de robustez, espessura foliar, índice de clorofila, biomassa seca, massa foliar específica - MFE e área foliar total). A emergência iniciou-se após 21 dias da semeadura e atingiu, ao final do experimento, 84% para as sementes pequenas, valor inferior ao das sementes médias e grandes (94 e 90%, respectivamente). Em 60 dias, as mudas apresentavam, em média, 2,53 mm de diâmetro e 12,81 cm de altura. Nos primeiros 30 dias, as mudas formadas a partir de sementes pequenas tinham alturas menores que as demais. O tamanho das sementes não afetou o diâmetro do colo e a espessura das folhas durante o crescimento inicial das mudas, assim como para os parâmetros morfofisiológicos estudados. Ao longo de 120 dias, houve aumento do conteúdo de clorofilas, biomassa seca, área foliar total, exceto para a MFE. O tamanho das sementes afeta a emergência e a altura das mudas de mama-cadela após 30 dias após a emergência. Palavras-chave: Brosimum gaudichaudii; Cerrado; crescimento inicial.   Effect of seed size on emergence and mophophysiology of mama-cadela seedlings   ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the seedling emergence and morphophysiology of mama-cadela (Brosimum gaudichaudii Trécul) seedlings produced from seeds of different sizes. Seedling emergence percentage and seedling morphophysiological characteristics (height, diameter, slenderness index, leaf thickness, chlorophyll index, dry matter, specific leaf mass - MFE and total leaf area) were determined. The emergence started after 21 days of sowing and reached, at the end of the experiment, 84% for small seeds, lower than the average and large seeds (94 and 90%, respectively). In 60 days, the seedlings had, on average, 2.53 mm in diameter and 12.81 cm in height. In the first 30 days, seedlings formed from small seeds had shorter heights than the others. The seeds size did not affect the diameter and the leaves thickness during the initial growth of the seedlings, as well as for the morphophysiological parameters studied. Over the 120 days, there was an increase in the content of chlorophylls, dry matter, total leaf area, except for MFE. AbstractSeveral biotic and abiotic stresses significantly decrease the biomass accumulation and seed yield of sesame crops under rainfed areas. However, plant growth regulators (such as Paclobutrazol) can improve the total dry matter and seed production of the sesame crop. The effects of the paclobutrazol application on dry matter accumulation and seed yield had not been studied before in sesame under rainfed conditions. Therefore, a two-year field study during 2018 and 2019 was conducted with key objectives to assess the impacts of paclobutrazol on leaf greenness, leaf area, total dry matter production and partitioning, seed shattering, and seed yield of sesame. Two sesame cultivars (TS-5 and TS-3) were treated with four paclobutrazol concentrations (P0 = Control, P1 = 100 mg L−1, P2 = 200 mg L−1, P3 = 300 mg L−1). The experiment was executed in RCBD-factorial design with three replications. Compared with P0, treatment P3 improved the leaf greenness of sesame by 17%, 38%, and 60% at 45, 85, and 125 days after sowing, respectively. However, P3 treatment decreased the leaf area of sesame by 14% and 20% at 45 and 85 days after sowing than P0, respectively. Compared with P0, treatment P3 increased the leaf area by 46% at 125 days after sowing. On average, treatment P3 also improved the total biomass production by 21% and partitioning in roots, stems, leaves, capsules, and seeds by 23%, 19%, 23%, 22%, and 40%, respectively, in the whole growing seasons as compared to P0. Moreover, under P3 treatment, sesame attained the highest seed yield and lowest seed shattering by 27% and 30%, respectively, compared to P0. This study indicated that by applying the paclobutrazol concentration at the rate of 300 mg L−1 in sesame, the leaf greenness, leaf areas, biomass accumulation, partitioning, seed yield, and shatter resistance could be improved. Thus, the optimum paclobutrazol level could enhance the dry matter accumulation and seed production capacity of sesame by decreasing shattering losses under rainfed conditions.

Sulphur is a component of plant amino acids, proteins, vitamins, and enzyme structures which influence the productivity of oil seed and total oil content. The experiment was conducted to find out the effect of sulphur on the seed yield and oil content of sesame in Bangladesh. The experiment comprised three varieties of sesame viz. Binatil-2, Binatil-3 and BARI Til-4 and six levels of sulphur (S) viz. 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 kg S ha–1. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Dry matter production, crop characters, yield components, seed yield and oil content were significantly influenced by variety, level of sulphur and their interaction. The highest dry matter production plant–1 at 50 DAS (17.56 g), plant height (101.3 cm), number of branches plant–1 (3.66),  number of pods plant-1 (41.56), number of seeds pod-1 (58.83),  seed yield    (747.2 kg ha-1), stover yield (2243.0 kg ha–1) and oil content (40.03%) were obtained in BARI Til-4 while the corresponding lowest values of all parameters were recorded in Binatil-2. In case of sulphur application, the highest dry matter production plant–1 at 50 DAS (20.81 g), plant height (109.7 cm), number of branches plant–1 (3.87),  number of pods plant–1 (46.13),  number of seeds pod-1 (56.67),  seed yield (800.0 kg ha–1), stover yield (2787 kg ha–1 ) and oil content (43.97%) were obtained when crop was fertilized with 30 kg S ha–1 while the lowest seed yield (502.2 kg ha–1), stover yield (1550.0 kg ha–1) and oil content (32.80%) were obtained in control (0 kg S ha–1). BARI Til-4 fertilized with 30 kg S ha–1 produced the highest dry matter plant–1 at 50 DAS (24.80 g), number of pods plant–1 (51.13), seeds pod–1 (62.0) and seed yield (1011.0 kg ha–1). The highest oil content (43.97%) was also recorded in BARI Til-4 fertilized with 30 kg S ha–1, which was as good as that of BARI Til-4 fertilized with 40 kg S ha–1. Therefore, BARI Til-4 fertilized with 30 kg S ha–1 can be considered as a promising practice in respect of seed yield and oil content of sesame in Bangladesh. J. Bangladesh Agril. Changes in the pre-emergence distribution of dry matter in subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum L.) variety Bacchus Marsh were followed at 21°C, using three sizes of seed and three depths of sowing, ½, 1¼, and 2 in. Decreasing seed size and increasing depth of sowing both reduce the weight of the cotyledons a t emergence. Seed of the three sizes were sown a t three depths in pot culture a t staggered intervals so that emergence was simultaneous. Dry weight in the early vegetative stage was proportional to seed size, and total leaf area and leaf numbers showed similar trends. Plants of each seed size grew at the same relative rate. No effect of depth of sowing could be detected, and this was shown to be due to the cotyledon area a t emergence being constant for any given seed size, regardless of varying depth of sowing and hence of cotyledon weight. It was concluded that seed size in a plant having epigeal germination and without endosperm is of importance: firstly, in limiting the maximum hypocotyl elongation and hence depth of sowing, and secondly, in determining cotyledon area. Cotyledon area in turn influences seedling growth, which is not affected by cotyledon weight. Once emergence has taken place, cotyledonary reserves are of no further significance in the growth of the plants.

Significant improvement in LAI, number of trifoliate, SPAD value of green leaf chlorophyll, dry matter accumulation, yield, harvest index (%) and nutrient content of mungbean were recorded due to application of 75% RDF + 2.5 t/ha vermicompost (VC) + Rhizobium (Rh)+ phosphorus solublizing bacteria (PSB), followed by 100% RDF + 2.5 t/ha VC and 100% RDF + Rh + PSB. The highest seed yield of mungbean was obtained with the application of 75% RDF + 2.5 t/ha VC + Rh + PSB (12.34 q /ha) followed by 100% RDF + 2.5 t/ha VC (12.05 q /ha) and 100% RDF + Rh+ PSB (11.95 q /ha).

The study was carried out to find out the effect of zinc (Zn) and boron (B) on growth and yield of okra (BARI Dherosh 1). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The treatments of the experiment were, T0 (without Zn or B), T1 (20 kg Zn ha-1), T2 (30 kg Zn ha-1), T3 (10 kg B ha-1), T4 (20 kg B ha-1), T5 (20 kg Zn ha-1 + 10 kg B ha-1), T6 (20 kg Zn ha-1 + 20 kg B ha-1), T7 (30 kg Zn ha-1 + 10 kg B ha-1) and T8 (30 kg Zn ha-1 + 20 kg B ha-1) were undertaken to evaluate the best results of the study. The highest plant height was found in T8 (30 kg Zn ha-1 + 20 kg B ha-1) but the highest number of leaves plant-1 was recorded from T7 (30 kg Zn ha-1 + 10 kg B ha-1). On the other hand, the maximum leaf area index, SPAD value, mean fruit weight, fruit length, fruit diameter, fruit dry matter (%), number of fruits plant-1, fresh fruit weight plant-1 , fruit yield plot-1 and fruit yield ha-1 were found in T7 (30 kg Zn ha-1 + 10 kg B ha-1), while the control (T0) showed lowest performance for the respected parameters. It is strongly concluded that 30 kg Zn ha-1 with 10 kg B ha-1 combination may be helpful for okra cultivation in the field level to increase okra production.
