A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the growth retardant Cycocel application in the growth and development of poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) ‘Freedom Red’.  Cycocel was applied by spraying plant shoots at the concentrations of 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500 ppm. The increase in cycocel concentrations reduced plant height, leaf size, internodal length, plant spread and the number of flowering plants. All cycocel concentrations resulted in an ideal potted plant height. The optimum spray concentration of Cycocel used to obtain compact and uniformly flowering plants under tropical West Java environment was 1000 ppm.

SUMMARYThe growth and development of a short-season sweet potato (Nemagold) and a long-season cultivar (White Maltese) were compared quantitatively in sub-tropical Australia and also with growth data for Nemagold in a temperate environment. Total and storage root dry matter production (DMP) followed autocatalytic equations, with similar whole plant DMP from planting to week 25 for both cultivars but plateauing (at 90% of asymptotic weight) at week 23 for Nemagold (448 g) with favourable temperatures and at week 38 for White Maltese (813 g) when temperatures were unfavourable. Storage root DMP of Nemagold plateaued at week 23 (246 g) and at week 36 (219 g) for White Maltese. Data are given on other attributes and on phasic development.

SUMMARYThe growth and development of single plants of oil seed rape, variety Zollerngold, are described quantitatively and particular attention paid to the sequence and pattern of flower and pod production on the different inflorescences. The period of flower opening over the whole plant spanned an average of 26 days and more than 75% of the pods which were retained to maturity were formed from flowers which opened within 14 days of anthesis. Most of these flowers were found on the terminal raceme and on the basal and middle regions of the axillary inflorescences arising from the uppermost three nodes.

The growth of the vegetative shoot of tobacco, Nicotiana tabacum L., and the associated changes in dry weight of the whole plant and its major parts are described. By means of serial reconstruction, the volume changes of successive young leaf primordia are followed, and this information is integrated with the dry weight data for older leaves.
