En el artículo se analiza el proceso de institucionalización universitaria de la danza disciplinaria en Valdivia a mediados del siglo XX. El objetivo es demostrar que su desarrollo surgió debido a la preocupación por la apertura de la cultura a la sociedad civil, entendida aquella como aquellos elementos educativos y artísticos de interés para el Estado chileno, los agentes privados y las municipalidades.El proceso de institucionalización de la danza corresponde a un periodo de transformaciones en torno a la comprensión de la necesidad de integrar en la academia valdiviana el arte escénico, lo que no estuvo alejado de problemas relativos al financiamiento universitario, desastres naturales e interés por parte de las autoridades de mantener el área. Las fuentes utilizadas corresponden a relatos orales de tres destacadas bailarinas vinculadas al campo de la danza en Valdivia, testimonios de carácter principal que encarnan las influencias de escuelas, corrientes y estéticas; documentos vinculados con la historia de la Facultad de Bellas Artes, extraídos del Archivo de la Secretaría General de la Universidad Austral de Chile, archivos personales y notas periodísticas del diario El Correo de Valdivia.Institutionalization of Dance in the Fine Arts faculty in Valdivia: A history from its dancers’ experience 1954-1976AbstractThis article analyzes the process of university institutionalization of disciplinary dance in Valdivia in the middle of Twentieth Century. The objective is to show that its development emerged due to the concern about the cultural opening to the civil society known as those educational and artistic elements of interest for the Chilean State, private agents, and municipalities. Such process of institutionalization takes place when people were transforming their understanding about the necessity to integrate Performing Arts in the Academy of Valdivia, which was not far away from problems as university funding, natural disasters, and the interest from authorities to maintain the area. This chapter studies the cult of Menelaus and Helen at Therapne. A ‘happy congruence’ of evidence, from the seventh century BC onward, indicates that Menelaus and Helen were honoured at a place known in antiquity as Therapne. Indeed, authors from the early archaic period through the end of the era attest to the presence of a shrine to Menelaus and/or Menelaus and Helen on the hills across the Eurotas River from modern Sparta. The site, comprising an archaic shrine built next to and atop an extensive Mycenaean site, was well-studied by the British School early and late in the twentieth century. Moreover, inscriptional evidence corresponds with the ancient testimonia to indicate that Menelaus and Helen were worshiped at the place already known in antiquity as the Menelaion. Dedications to Helen and Menelaus dated to the seventh and sixth centuries BC are among the earliest reported inscriptional evidence for the worship of any Homeric hero in Greece. The archaic cult at the Menelaion is frequently discussed both for the study of hero cult in itself and for the question as to how early Greek cult did intersect with the proliferation of epic poetry.

How do elites signal their superior social position via the consumption of culture? We address this question by drawing on 120 years of “recreations” data ( N = 71,393) contained within Who’s Who, a unique catalogue of the British elite. Our results reveal three historical phases of elite cultural distinction: first, a mode of aristocratic practice forged around the leisure possibilities afforded by landed estates, which waned significantly in the late-nineteenth century; second, a highbrow mode dominated by the fine arts, which increased sharply in the early-twentieth century before gently receding in the most recent birth cohorts; and, third, a contemporary mode characterized by the blending of highbrow pursuits with everyday forms of cultural participation, such as spending time with family, friends, and pets. These shifts reveal changes not only in the contents of elite culture but also in the nature of elite distinction, in particular, (1) how the applicability of emulation and (mis)recognition theories has changed over time, and (2) the emergence of a contemporary mode that publicly emphasizes everyday cultural practice (to accentuate ordinariness, authenticity, and cultural connection) while retaining many tastes that continue to be (mis)recognized as legitimate.

ResumoNa virada do século XIX para o XX, estados como Pará e Amazonas viveram grandes transformações tanto na vida política quanto cultural. Suas capitais e os costumes de suas gentes buscavam refinamento a partir dos padrões burgueses europeus e a apreciação das chamadas belas artes em muito contribuíram para esse objetivo. Nesse contexto, favorecido pela grande circulação de dinheiro provocada pelo comércio da borracha, os estados em questão se tornaram atrativos para aqueles artistas em busca de novos mercados. O que o presente artigo aborda, portanto, é, através do caso da viagem do pintor fluminense Antônio Parreiras para o Norte, como se dava a articulação entre esses mercados e como circulavam as obras de arte, pensando que esse deslocamento não é só geográfico, mas também de questões que permeiam nossa leitura da história da arte no Brasil. Com isso, entendemos esse trânsito e as trocas provenientes dele, como essenciais para a formação coleções e, com elas, de novas narrativas.AbstractAt the turn from the nineteenth to the twentieth century, states like Pará and Amazonas have undergone great transformations in both political and cultural life. Its capitals and the customs of its people sought refinement from European bourgeois standards and the appreciation of the so-called fine arts contributed greatly to this goal. In this context, favored by the large circulation of money brought on by the rubber trade, the states in question became attractive to those artists in search for new markets. What the present article addresses therefore is, through the case of the trip of Antônio Parreiras, a painter from Rio de Janeiro, to the North, how the articulation between these markets and how the art circulation works, thinking that this displacement is not only geographic, but also of questions that permeate our reading of the history of art in Brazil. With this, we understand this transit and the exchanges coming from it, as essential for the formation of collections and, with them, new narratives.

Josef Hoffmann was an Austrian architect and designer who proved instrumental in formulating the aesthetics and theory of modernist design. Among the most progressive architects in turn-of-the-century Austria, he was a founder of the Vienna Secession and the Wiene Werkstätte. His early work was aligned with Jugendstil, the German and Austrian manifestation of Art Nouveau, but graduated towards an abstract, geometric simplicity that anticipated twentieth-century Modernism. Committed to the concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art), Hoffmann applied his talents to architecture, interior design, furniture and metalwork. His greatest achievement is the Palais Stoclet in Brussels, a true Gesamtkunstwerk in which all elements are synthesized into symphonic unity. Born in Pirnitz, Moravia (now part of the Czech Republic), Hoffmann studied at the Higher State Crafts School in Brno and at Vienna’s Academy of Fine Arts. He worked in the office of proto-modernist architect Otto Wagner, where he met future collaborator Joseph Maria Olbrich. He won the Prix de Rome in 1895, which gave him the opportunity to study classical architecture, and Mycenaean influences proliferated in his early work. Hoffmann was among the group of artists, architects and designers who seceded from the Association of Austrian Artists in 1897, objecting to what they saw as the inherent conservatism of established academies.

This chapter introduces the fictional tale by tracing its evolution from its unknown origins in what was probably the seventeenth century to its historicisation and Christianisation in the nineteenth century, to its infiltration of popular culture and the fine arts in the twentieth century. Its adaptations across various media, including literature, cinema and music, are explored. The chapter furthermore shows how the tale inscribes the endemic paradigms of the ʿUdhrī love narrative and the popular epic or sīra with the western model of the damsel-in-distress fairy tale. Finally, the chapter relates the process by which the tale becomes absorbed into Arabic culture to Yuri Lotman’s notion of the ‘boundary’ as the site of artistic innovation and the creation of new genres.

Abstract Visual art curriculum should allow a wide range of activities to develop children's imagination and creativity, to provide a balanced framework for the harmonious development of people who can cope with the massive ammount of images that invade our daily lives. Contemporary art develops a new language - a hybrid language - which for now remains unknown to the majority of the public and it is not integrated into the Arts curriculum. General frame analysis reveals that Fine Arts are studied only up to the 10th grade, except for the humanity profile and for the vocational arts profile. School curricula stipulate fine arts study up to mid twentieth century. Openness towards contemporary art and the language of art starting with the second half of the twentieth century is quite limited even if the curriculum allows a certain flexibility in the approach.
