The process of grading pupil performance in American schools has received considerable attention over the years. Most of the previous studies have focused on the observed associations between grades and certain pupil characteristics such as family background, sex, abilities, attitudes and behaviors. Far less attention has been given to the influence of teachers' assessment of pupil behavior on grades. Incorporating this dimension into our analysis of the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988 data, we not only found virtually no difference in school performance by gender, but also that the influence of family SES on grades operates almost entirely through academic achievement and behavior in school. Furthermore, since academic achievement affects grades both directly and indirectly, achievement seems to reflect both the quality of work performed in class as well as the teacher's evaluation of the adolescent's role performance. Consistent with this interpretation, the pupils' self-reported behavior does not affect his or her grades directly, but indirectly through the teacher's evaluation of the adolescent's role performance. This finding suggests a pupil's demeanor and behavior have institutional meaning only as they are filtered through the teacher's perceptions.

This study used a national sample (from the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988) of 8th-grade students to examine the effects of child disability on parental educational expectations. Four types of disability conditions were included: visual impairment ( n = 97), hearing impairment ( n = 126), deafness ( n = 38), and orthopedic impairment ( n = 61). Controls without disabilities were also included. Although parental expectations were found to be higher for students with disabilities than for those without, student disability status (disabled versus nondisabled) did not contribute significantly to the ability to predict parental expectations. School performance, parent education, and race were found to similarly influence parental educational expectations for students with and without disabilities.

Bintara – Bekasi is one area where garbage becomes a source of living for people staying in that area. There are approximately 200 families living in Bintara traditional material recovery site. This facility is managed by 10 bosses, who rent land to collect trash. Each boss manages 17 -20 families. Their main jobs are scavengers and trash collectors in the neighbourhood area. The type of this research is experimental research, because there are no available data yet so that data have to be created first. The result of this research can be used to develop innovation in order to increase the quality of life of the trash collectors community.Total participants are 14 families who have been working as scavengers for more than 5 years in Bintara. The first questionnaires were developed to measure attitude, intention and behavior to have a changing quality of life, based on the theory of reasoned action. The second questionnaires were developed to predict the level of knowledge, orientation and motivation of participants. The first part of education theme consisted of four modules: biopore absorption hole, making compost and local microorganism , handicraft from recycled materials and planting vegetable seed in used plastic container. The second education materials are delivered into several scenarios, including: together nurturing the material recovery site as the economic source of families, together nurturing the surrounding environment for the health of community, together maintaining good attitude (greet and respect each other, willingness to listen, eagerness to learn, willingness to cooperate, and openess), occupational safety and health as well as the concept of separating organic and inorganic waste at the source. The implementation of these modules was quite successful because the participants were willing to follow the education process and participate actively. Overall, the attitude, intention and behavior of the participants on education process were strongly positive, although there were decreasing score on the final measurement. The decreasing score was influenced by the education process that has been conducted before, because some participants were facing difficulties in implementing the education materials in their daily lives, they were reluctant due to extra energy needed to implement it, and the hot environment that makes them feel tired rapidly. The family background of the participants were farm workers in Karawang and Indramayu, where they thought farm workers were more difiicult to make a living. They considered that being scavengers and trash collectors gave them more economic benefit , so that they do not want to do any more work related to cultivate soils and planting crops.

Observing the current condition of the Indonesian nation has led to a phenomenon that the country is being hit by the crisis in various aspects of life. Various forms of violation and offense grow and develop in daily life of the community, such as: corruption, collusion, nepotism, and drug (narcotics) and alcohol abuse, theft, robbery and prostitution. In this country, it also begins to emerge the tenet and behavior of radicalism that disturb the community and government. On the other side, nowadays is also faced with the clash and confusion of thought of ‘the contradiction between religion and the State’ embedded to the young generation (millennial generation). The various social problems described above occur due to the low quality of faith and caused the decline of morality and moral degradation of this nation. It needs a fundamental and accurate solution in facing those problems. Improving and rearranging the paradigm, system and orientation of Islamic education according to its framework can be the alternative solution to solve the problems. Islamic education should be a core in the national education curriculum, so that Islamic education will have a complete transformation in people life of this state. A comprehensive and systematic transformation of Islamic education can be done through the following stages: 1) Religious education should be the core in the national education curriculum, and the substance of religious teachings should not be disputed in nation’s life. 2) Religious education in schools and colleges/universities must be taught by qualified and professional teachers and lecturers, and 3) Implementation of religious education materials should fit the needs and age of learners.

Although many studies have demonstrated positive associations between perceived control and academic achievement, few studies have actually explored which of the two constructs is the determinant of the other. There are only a few longitudinal studies on the relationship of perceived control and academic achievement. The present study examined the reciprocal longitudinal relation between perceived control and academic achievement. Further, considering the multiethnic background of the USA, this study investigated how the relationship between two constructs varies with ethnicity. Using a randomly selected sample of 1,500 students from Asian, Black, Hispanic, and White groups in the National Education Longitudinal Study data, Autoregressive Cross-lagged Modeling was performed to get a complete picture of the longitudinal relationship. Results showed a positive longitudinal effect of academic achievement on perceived control across the ethnic groups. Explanations for these findings are discussed.

The name similarity effect is the tendency to like people, places, and things with names similar to our own. Although many researchers have examined name similarity effects on preferences and behavior, no research to date has examined whether individual differences exist in susceptibility to those effects. This research reports the results of two experiments that examine the role of self-monitoring in moderating name similarity effects. In the first experiment, name similarity effects on brand attitude and purchase intentions were found to be stronger for respondents high, rather than low, in self-monitoring. In the second experiment, the interactive effect observed in the first study was found to be especially true in a public (vs. private) usage context. These findings are consistent with theoretical expectations of name similarity effects as an expression of egotism manifested in the image and impression management concerns of high self-monitors.
