Four central constructs of the post-modern perspective are extended and tested using secondary analysis of Census data and the NORC General Social Survey: 1972–94 data sets. The modified postmodern themes of: (1) the decline of a single universal family organizational standard, and (2) growing cultural diversity, which is seen as legitimate—diversity which is increasingly based upon affectivity and achievement emanating from an emphases on relationship cooperation, friendship, individual choice and expressive communications, were supported by examining changes in American family structure, attitudes toward such structural changes, and changing attitudes toward marital and family patterns over the last quarter century. However, little support was found for the greater use of, and reliance on, (3) the mass media. Mixed results were found on the fourth construct, greater variance in, and/or loss of, personal happiness or personal or family life satisfaction. Possible explanations for these findings are discussed. Given the growing importance and acceptance of organizational and cultural diversity, future studies of family structure and processes may profit from more narrowly defined localized and pragmatic parameters of finely delimited social aggregates. Such studies are more consistent with the realities of contemporary American social organization and cultural values of family life, the behaviors and attitudes of Americans, and the modified post-modern perspective.

The health and welfare of children depend on the ability of families, alone or with the assistance of others, to meet their needs. This task has become increasingly difficult for many families. Pediatricians need to be able to recognize situations in which families may have difficulty fulfilling parental obligations and assist the family in finding available additional support. CHANGES IN FAMILIES The structure of families and patterns of family life in the United States have undergone some profound changes during the past quarter century. The proportion of births to unmarried women increased between 1960 to 1985 from 5.3% to 22% and has continued in the same direction.1-3 Since 1960 the divorce rate has more than doubled,1-3 and it is estimated that 25% of children growing up in this decade will experience a divorce.4 Although remarriage rates are high, over a third again end in divorce.5 As a consequence, 8% fewer children are living with two parents (74.8% in 1989 versus 83.1% in 1971),6,7 and only 61% live with both biologic parents.8 Further evidence of change in family life is that almost 60% of all mothers with preschool-aged children are in the labor force, reflecting a twofold increase since 1970.9 A decline in the purchasing power of family income, the lack of comparable wages for women, and significant rates of homelessness have all stressed families and contributed to the continuing escalation of the percentage of children who live in poverty. Finally, internal migration within the country has separated many families from the natural support systems provided by their extended families, leaving parents socially isolated and interrupting the intergenerational transmission of advice and support.

The present chapter presents the results of a study carried out within the Romanian culture and civilization classes taught to the foreign students in the preparatory year. Our goal was not only to familiarize them with Romanian culture, but also to help them better interact and function as a homogeneous group, in spite of their cultural diversity. The paper aims at studying to what degree cultural diversity and identity marks specific to students coming from various countries can be used to facilitate their adaptation to the culture and mentality of the host country and to a multicultural group. Among many aspects regarding Romanian traditional culture and civilization, we included information related to Romanian food and eating habits. Such a topic cannot be neglected if we take into account the fact that individual needs constitute a real issue in the adaptation of a multicultural group to a new culture and lifestyle.

Rogers Brubaker’s work has been a touchstone for the study of ethnicity, nationalism, and politics for more than a quarter-century. His recent book, Grounds for Difference, offers an important new theoretical statement on the politics and organization of cultural diversity. In this symposium, four prominent historical sociologists provide commentary on the possibilities and complexities of the book, with particular attention to their normative, political, and methodological implications.

American Indian elders play a central role in the day-to-day activities of Indian family life. Social service providers must be aware of Indian extended family structure so that programs for Indians will reflect the inclination of these communities to integrate the generations, not isolate elders from children.

This article examines how facets of family structure and processes are linked to self-rated health and psychological distress in a national sample of Asian Americans. The authors find little support for well-established theories predicting the effects of family structure. Marital status does not affect self-rated health and has limited effects on psychological distress. The only effects of family composition are evident among men and the U.S.-born, where the presence of extended family in the home is related to lower levels of psychological distress. The authors find important gender and nativity differences in the effects of family cohesion, which protect the physical and psychological well-being of women and the U.S.-born but not men or foreign-born individuals. Findings suggest that the effects of family structure and processes on well-being are not universal. Family studies among Asian Americans that do not account for gender and nativity differences may be overlooking underlying complexity.
