Four olethreutine species, including two new species described herein, are associated with the fruits and seedlings of Rhizophoraceae in the Ryukyu Islands: Cryptophlebia horii Kawabe feeds on Bruguiera gymnorhiza (L.) Lam.; C. amamiana, sp. nov. feeds on Kandelia candel (L.) Druce; C. palustris, sp. nov. feeds on Rhizophora mucronata Lam.; and Eucosma coniogramma Clarke (= Eucosma okubiensis Kawabe, syn. nov, herein newly established as a junior synonym) feeds on Bruguiera gymnorhiza. Adults, larvae, and genitalia are diagnosed and illustrated for each species, and geographic distribution and information on biology are provided. In addition, we discuss Cryptophlebia species associated with mangroves worldwide, host preference, and adaptations to the mangrove environment.

The freshwater shrimp, Australatyaobscura Han & Klotz, has been known only from Taiwan and Panay Island, Philippines. An adult A.obscura was collected from a river on Ishigaki Island, Ryukyu Islands, Japan. This is the first record of the species in Japan and the northernmost specimen-supported record to date. The species is suggested as having been transported northwards by the Kuroshio Current.

Mirograpsus asper is described as a new genus and new species in the subfamily Ilyograpsinae Števčić, 2005, of the family Macrophthalmidae Dana, 1851, on the basis of a single male specimen from Ishigaki Island, Ryukyu Islands, Japan. The new genus most closely resembles the monotypic Apograpsus Komai & Wada, 2008 (type species, Ilyograpsus paantu Naruse & Kishino, 2006), sharing a similar carapace shape, but is differentiated chiefly by the fusion of the male pleomeres 4–6 and the unarmed meri of the ambulatory legs. The functional fusion of the male pleomeres 4–6 is unique in the Macrophthalmidae.

Sesarmid crabs are reported to dominate the Indo West-Pacific mangroves and consume huge amounts of mangrove leaves and detritus. Neosarmatium trispinosum Davie (1994) is common in the landward mangroves of the Ryukyu Islands in southern Japan. Stomach contents of the crabs collected from Okinawa, Miyako and Iriomote Islands showed that their diet consisted of mainly mangrove leaves with small amounts of sediments indicating that N. trispinosum is primarily detritivorous. The feeding preference of N. trispinosum was investigated by offering three types (green, yellow and brown) of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza leaves. Crabs were found to prefer brown leaves than the green or yellow ones. Consumption rate of brown leaves was significantly higher (p<0.0001) in cases where green, yellow and brown leaves were provided together, than when provided separately. The C/N ratio shows that the burrow sediments had C/N ratios 2/3 times lower than that of leaves, indicating that mangrove sediments could have higher nutritional value than mangrove leaves.

A species of oribatid mites, Pergalumna amamiensis was collected from Amami-Ohshima Island, Ishigaki Island, and Okinawa Island, Southwestern Japan. The specimens were studied in detail, and supplementary descriptions are provided; these include features of the rostrum, the subcapitulum and the surface pattern of pteromorphs. The main morphological traits for this species are summarized as follows; body length 519–570 μm, body width 363–410 μm, rostral tip pointed, sensillus with a long stalk covered by minute barbs, porose areas Aa bulbous, porose areas A1, A2, and A3 circular, surface of pteromorphs ornamented by fine granular structure and dense wrinkles, fine granular structure on prodorsum, subcapitulum, genital plates and anal plates, median pore on the notogaster represented as single pore.

Using salinity database of World Ocean Atlas 2009 (WOA09) issued by NOAA in 2010, refer the range of high-salinity tongue to indicate the strength about high-salinity water, from the perspective of structural changes of salinity; the water exchange through Ryukyu Islands upper 500 m have been analyzed, the results show that: due to Ryukyu Trough, currents on both sides of Ryukyu Islands occur exchange, for upper 500 m, high-salinity water in east of the Ryukyu Islands mainly invade the west waterthe Kuroshio in East China Sea; the intrusion strength is powerful from the depth of 100 m to 200 m, and the 150 m layer is the core layer of high-salinity water intrusion; the high-salinity water at the east of Ryukyu Islands invades the Kuroshio are stronger in March, May, June, September, October and November, are weaker in April and December.

Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit, a leguminous shrub, has come into use as a fodder plant for animals in the Ryukyu Islands as it provides highly palatable, high quality feed (Kitamura, 1985). It is superior to other feeds available in this regard (Higashiohmine, Aramoto & Yamashiro, 1971; Isa et al. 1982).
