The Masque, or serenata, or pastoral opera, Acis and Galatea—in eighteenth-century printings it was indifferently categorized—has been not so much neglected as quite ignored by the biographers and critics of John Gay. In its entirety, words and music, it is a masterpiece, and the reasons for its lying unregarded, except by historians of music, deserve to be scrutinized because they signalize a recurrent failing on the part of those who write on the arts, when a work exists simultaneously in more than one medium. Only lately, in truth, has criticism begun to cope with Shakespeare himself as drama existent in and for living embodiment on a physical stage and nowhere else, not even in the mind of Coleridge. (Theatrical criticism is by habit only piecemeal commentary on separate productions.) Similarly, to set small matters beside great ones, only of late has the ballad of tradition begun to be considered as song and not as a literary or pseudo-literary genre, sufficient and self-sustaining in its text alone. And the bardic tradition of the Ugo-Slavs is teaching us much about the Homeric epics of which former generations were unaware. Signs, in fact, are here and there beginning to appear of an unwillingness to rest content with the one-dimensional conception of arts which are only half-fulfilled until they are realized in two dimensions or more. A drawing of a sculpture is not enough; a sculpture of an action is not enough; pantomime does not suffice the spoken scene; the verbal text of a musical scena will not satisfy. Nor can any of these be adequately criticized on a basis of missing dimensions.

Nanosystems are devices that are in the size range of a billionth of a meter (1 x 10-9) and therefore are built necessarily from individual atoms. The one-dimensional nanosystems or linear nanosystems cover all the nanosized systems which possess one dimension that exceeds the other two dimensions, i.e. extension over one dimension is predominant over the other two dimensions. Here only two of the dimensions have to be on the nanoscale (less than 100 nanometers). In this paper we consider the structural relationship between a linear nanosystem and its atoms acting as components of the nanosystem. Using such information, we then assess the nanosystem's limiting reliability which is, of course, probabilistic in nature. We consider the linear nanosystem at a fixed moment of time, say the present moment, and we assume that the present state of the linear nanosystem depends only on the present states of its atoms.

The methodology of the solution to the inverse fractal problem with the wavelet transform1,2 is extended to two-dimensional self-affine functions. Similar to the one-dimensional case, the two-dimensional wavelet maxima bifurcation representation used is derived from the continuous wavelet decomposition. It possesses translational and scale invariance necessary to reveal the invariance of the self-affine fractal. As many fractals are naturally defined on two-dimensions, this extension constitutes an important step towards solving the related inverse fractal problem for a variety of fractal types.

Art is defined as the expertise to disclose or express ideas and thoughts a esthetics, including the ability and imagination to realize the creation of objects or the work atmosphere capable of inflicting a sense beautiful. Art is diverse and most of it always questionable in terms of Islamic law. In general, the art divided into two: first, sculpture, painting and drawing. And second, sound art. The main problem in sculpture, painting and drawing is if the object of animate beings, because on the one hand there are numbers of hadith that prohibit making images that are either raised or incurred and three dimensions. While on the other hand it has been commonly done in the community, especially in the natural environment that is fertile and rich with a variety of animals created by God as our State that inspired the artists. In addition, the sculpture on the side can be an expression of sheer beauty, it also has benefits for lessons and so on. Furthermore, sound art is a universal cultural phenomenon, practiced by many nations. In the time of the Prophet himself has been known to sing and play music. In terms of general principles of religious teachings that sound art including mu'amalat dunyawiyyah category. Restrictions on the arts (sculpture, painting, drawing, and sound) for their prudence of Muslims. Prudence was intended that they do not fall to the things that are contrary to the values of Islam which is the focal point at that time. Art as an aesthetic manifestation of the spirit of monotheism and not a waste of money but the art necessary for the improvement of human life, promotion of the dignity and the dignity and refining the soul and the mind. If so the purpose of art, then it is possible that the skill and sunnah favor, not against it.

Abstract A linear stability analysis is performed on two simplified models representing a one-dimensional flame between oxidizer and fuel reservoirs and a two-dimensional “edge-flame” between the same reservoirs but above a cold, inert wall. Comparison of the eigenvalue spectra for both models is performed to discern the validity of extending the results from the one-dimensional problem to the two-dimensional problem. Of primary interest is the influence on flame stability of thermal-diffusive imbalances, i.e. non-unity Lewis numbers. Flame oscillations are observed when Le > 1, and cellular flames are witnessed when Le < 1. It is found that when Le > 1 the characteristics of flame behavior are consistent between the two models. Furthermore, when Le < 1, the models are found to be in good agreement with respect to the magnitude of the critical wave numbers. Results from the coarse mesh analysis of the two-dimensional system are presented and compared to the one-dimensional eigenvalue spectra. Additionally, an examination of low reactant convection is undertaken. It is concluded that for low flow rates the behavior in one and two dimensions are similar qualitatively and quantitatively.

Two methods for the numerical resolution of the Takagi-Taupin equations are compared. It is shown that for a small integration step Taupin's [Acta Cryst. (1967), 23, 25–35] extension to two dimensions of the one-dimensional Runge–Kutta third-order method is more accurate than the algorithm of Authier, Malgrange & Tournarie [Acta Cryst. (1968), A24, 126–136] but, for a given precision, Authier, Malgrange & Tournarie's method is faster than Taupin's so the former will usually be preferred for numerical calculation.

The alternating transverse Ising model with A and B sublattices is solved exactly in one and two dimensions, when a transverse field applied only to the A sublattice. The critical point of the honeycomb lattice is given as a function of the alternating transverse field. Moreover, the zero-temperature phase transition in the one-dimensional model with another alternating transverse field is discussed rigorously.

We study the behavior of the eigenvalues of the one and two dimensions ofq-deformed Dirac oscillator. The eigensolutions have been obtained by using a method based on theq-deformed creation and annihilation operators in both dimensions. For a two-dimensional case, we have used the complex formalism which reduced the problem to a problem of one-dimensional case. The influence of theq-numbers on the eigenvalues has been well analyzed. Also, the connection between theq-oscillator and a quantum optics is well established. Finally, for very small deformationη, we (i) showed the existence of well-knownq-deformed version of Zitterbewegung in relativistic quantum dynamics and (ii) calculated the partition function and all thermal quantities such as the free energy, total energy, entropy, and specific heat. The extension to the case of Graphene has been discussed only in the case of a pure phase (q=eiη).

The paper views rationalism as a central category of an entire sociological endeavor of Max Weber in two dimensions: through the progress of mind in the understanding of 'the nature of things' and overcoming the resistance posed to the mind on that path by nature itself on the one hand, and through the struggle against irrationality of the very social beliefs and institutions which have gathered in history, on the other. When it comes to the first dimension, rationalization of music begins with the solving of the problem of the division of the octave (which cannot be divided symmetrically into equal parts) and ends in the obstruction of the 'spiral' effect of intervals which the octave is composed of. (in order to ensure undisturbed successive or 'circular' lining of octaves). The other dimension is problematise in the relation with the ascetic ethics and the spirit of pentatonics, which is presented as similar to the relation between protestant ethics and the spirit of capitalism, only without the positive rationalist contributions of ascetic ethics.

Television programmes about archaeology, the Asterix series on many children’s bookshelves, Celtic-flavoured holidays in Ireland, the megalomaniacal classical style in the business buildings erected since the late 1980s—all these tell us about the enduring popularity of the past in people’s minds. The intellectual ‘other side of the coin’ are the departments of archaeology, museums of archaeology, and heritage departments operating all over the world. This interest in the past is certainly not new. Whereas the latter—the museums, university and heritage departments—only appeared in the urban landscape less than two hundred years ago, by then several generations of intellectuals with knowledge in the arts had been aware of the existence of an ancient past. A Doric folly on the bank of the river overlooked by the cathedral in the pretty city of Durham was built in 1830 by a Polish count and the eighteenth-century estate of La Alameda de Osuna on the outskirts of Madrid, with its Greek-inspired temple of love with a statue of Bacchus (substituting the original Venus statue that had been taken by the Napoleonic troops on their withdrawal to France)—are only two examples of my own personal daily encounter with the past I have had at diVerent periods in my life. Yet, a different type of past is also familiar to me, a past that is more related to the nation’s past. In La Alameda de Osuna estate, in addition to its many classical features, there is an eighteenth-century copy of a medieval hermit’s chapel, and a country house which used to have displayed automatons in traditional dress. In the seventeenth century a beautiful Gothic-style font cover was made for Durham cathedral illustrating a continuity with a medieval past. Many other examples could be added. All of them illustrate an obsession with the past which on the one hand has lasted at least several centuries. On the other, however, they also appear to indicate an initial quasi-fixation with the classical period, which gradually became counter-balanced by an appeal to each country’s past. This reveals a continuous transformation in time and space in the discourse of the past.
