Thispaper reports a novel method to concentrate bacteria in three-dimension by negative dielectrophoretic (n-DEP) force in a microchannel. This was achieved by placing a thin dielectric layer on one of a pair of parallel plate electrodes. The dielectric layer having a home-plate like pentagonal shape, forms a gradient of electric field causing n-DEP. A three-dimensional numerical simulation of bacteria trajectory predicts that bacteria flowing a microchannel were three-dimensionally concentrated beneath the tip of the pentagonal dielectric thin layer. The trajectory and concentration of bacteria under n-DEP force were also experimentally confirmed using Escherichia coli cells. Bacteria moved along edges of the dielectric layer and were pushed to the opposite electrode, resulting in their concentration in three-dimension. The proposed device might be applicable to selective concentration of bacteria depending on their dielectric properties.

The plasma sheath existing between an antenna and a surrounding plasma layer plays an essential role. It is predicted that, for a given operating frequency, there exist certain plasma densities for which the system is resonant, and this very strongly enhanced radiation is fully confirmed by experiments. This combination of dielectric layer and plasma enables to tune an antenna even when its dimensions are much smaller than the vacuum wavelength. The influence of a static magnetic field is discussed. The same system can also be used as a frequency-sensitive receiving aerial.

In this paper, we investigate the effects of small boundary perturbation on the laminar motion of a conducting fluid in a rectangular duct under applied transverse magnetic field. A small boundary perturbation of magnitude ? is applied on cross-section of the duct. Using the asymptotic analysis with respect to ?, we derive the effective model given by the explicit formulae for the velocity and induced magnetic field. Numerical results are provided confirming that the considered perturbation has nonlocal impact on the asymptotic solution.

The article describes the computer simulation of phased antenna arrays consisting of slotted waveguide antennas with air and dielectric filling. It is shown that inser-tion of a thin dielectric layer shifts the operating frequency range of phased anten-na arrays by 1 GHz or more down in frequency while maintaining directional char-acteristics.

The effects of the flow of an electrically conducting fluid upon a magnetic field anchored at the boundary of a domain are studied. By taking the resistivity as a small parameter, the first-order approximation of an asymptotic analysis yields a boundary layer for the magnetic potential. This layer is analysed both in general and in three particular cases, showing that while in general its effects decrease exponentially with the distance to the boundary, several additional effects are highly relevant.
