Shuttle tankers are becoming more widely used in deep water installations as a means of transporting crude oil to storage plants and refineries. The emissions of hydrocarbon vapours arise mainly during loading and offloading operations. Experiments have been carried out on the use of polyurethane/zeolite membrane on an alumina support for the separation of methane from carbon dioxide and oxygen. The physical properties of the membrane were investigated by FTIR. Single gas permeation tests with methane, propane, oxygen and carbon dioxide at a temperature of 293 K and pressure ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 x 10-5 Pa were carried out. The molar flux of the gases through the membrane was in the range of 3 x 10-2 to 1 x 10-1 molm-2s-1. The highest separation factor of CH4/CO2 and CH4/O2 and CH4/C3H8 was determined to be 1.7, 1.7 and 1.6 respectively.

The petrophysical properties of ultra-low permeability sandstone reservoirs near the injection wells change significantly after CO2 injection for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and CO2 storage, and different CO2 displacement methods have different effects on these changes. In order to provide the basis for selecting a reasonable displacement method to reduce the damage to these high water cut reservoirs near the injection wells during CO2 injection, CO2-formation water alternate (CO2-WAG) flooding and CO2 flooding experiments were carried out on the fully saturated formation water cores of reservoirs with similar physical properties at in-situ reservoir conditions (78 °, 18 MPa), the similarities and differences of the changes in physical properties of the cores before and after flooding were compared and analyzed. The measurement results of the permeability, porosity, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) transversal relaxation time (T2) spectrum and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the cores show that the decrease of core permeability after CO2 flooding is smaller than that after CO2-WAG flooding, with almost unchanged porosity in both cores. The proportion of large pores decreases while the proportion of medium pores increases, the proportion of small pores remains almost unchanged, the distribution of pore size of the cores concentrates in the middle. The changes in range and amplitude of the pore size distribution in the core after CO2 flooding are less than those after CO2-WAG flooding. After flooding experiments, clay mineral, clastic fines and salt crystals adhere to some large pores or accumulate at throats, blocking the pores. The changes in core physical properties are the results of mineral dissolution and fines migration, and the differences in these changes under the two displacement methods are caused by the differences in three aspects: the degree of CO2-brine-rock interaction, the radius range of pores where fine migration occurs, the power of fine migration.

Recent advances in SCADA and leak detection system technologies lead to higher scan rates and faster model speeds. As these model speeds increase and the inherent mathematical uncertainties in implicit method solutions are reduced, errors and uncertainties in measurement of the physical properties of the fluids transported by pipeline come to dominate the confidence calculations for computer generated leak alerts in the control center. The ability to collect more data must be supported by the need for better model data in order to achieve optimal leak detection system performance. This is particularly true when the products transported are non-homogeneous and have strong viscosity-vs-temperature relationships. These are characteristics of crude oils in California’s San Joaquin Valley where significant heating is required to pump these oils in an efficient manner. Proper characterization and correct mathematical expression of these physical properties in leak models has become critical. This paper presents these new developments in the context of an implementation of this new technology for the Pacific Pipeline System (PPS). PPS is a recently constructed and commissioned 209 km (130-mile), 50.8 cm (20″) diameter, insulated, hot crude oil pipeline between the southern portion of California’s San Joaquin Valley and refineries in the Los Angeles basin. Operational temperatures in this line vary from ambient to 82.2°C (180°F) with pressures ranging from 345 kPa (50 psi) to 11,720 kPa (1700 psi). Due to the unique geometry of the line, facilities along the route include pumping stations, metering stations and numerous “throttle-type” pressure reduction facilities. On PPS, a high-speed leak detection model is supported by a fiber optic (OC-1) communication backbone with data rate capacities in excess of 50 Megabits Per Second (MPS). Total scan times for the distributed communication system have been reduced to 1/4 second — each facility reports data to the SCADA host four times each second. A corresponding 1/4 second leak detection model cycle leads to selection of Methods of Characteristics segments on the order of 260 meters (850 feet). This resolution, in conjunction with the advanced instrumentation package of PPS, makes detection of very small leaks realizable. This paper starts with an overview of the system and combines a mix of the theoretical requirements imposed by the mathematical solutions with a practical description of the laboratory procedures and propagated experimental errors. The paper reviews temperature-related errors and uncertainties and their influence on leak detection performance.

In this paper, the sensitivity factors of CO2 huff-n-puff for multifractured horizontal wells (MFHWs) in tight oil reservoirs were investigated through an experimental test and numerical simulation. The pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) experiment and the slim tube experiment are used to understand the interaction mechanism between CO2 and crude oil, and the minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) of the CO2-crude oil system is 17 MPa. The single-well model was firstly established to analyze the sensitivity factors on production performance of MFHWs by using CO2 huff-n-puff. The controlling factors of CO2 huff-n-puff for MFHWs in tight oil reservoirs were divided into three categories (i.e., reservoir parameters, well parameters, and injection-production parameters), and the impact of individual parameter on well performance was discussed in detail. The range of reservoir parameters suitable for CO2 huff-n-puff of MFHWs is obtained. The reservoir permeability is from 0.1 mD to 1 mD, the reservoir thickness changes from 10 m to 30 m, and the reservoir porosity is from 7% to 12%. Based on the reservoir parameters of the target reservoir, the reasonable well and fracture parameters are obtained. The sensitivity intensity was followed by the horizontal well length, fracture conductivity, fracture spacing, and fracture half-length. CO2 injection-production parameters are further optimized, and the sensitivity intensity was followed by the single-cycle cumulative CO2 injection rate, the soaking time, the injection rates, and the production rates. It provides a reference for parameter optimization of CO2 huff-n-puff for MFHWs in tight oil reservoirs.
