Two parallel pipe jets of 20 mm diameter were placed 1.2 mm diameter apart and were connected by a 4 mm wide channel all along the central plane of the jets. The mean velocity flow field of the jets was investigated for three Reynolds number 16300, 34400 and 49200. The Reynolds number was based on the exit velocity of the jets and jet diameter. The experiment was performed in an air jet facility and yaw meter was used for measurement of mean velocity and its direction. Their variations along the longitudinal, transverse, and lateral directions have been analyzed. A significant change of the jet flow field is observed near the exit of the jet. The combined effect of the jets diminishes the presence of recirculation region at the immediate exit rather enhances the energy and momentum transfer between their individual flow fields. Static pressure and kinetic energy distribution are also studied and a momentous variations have been noticed with varying Reynolds number.

The type of double concentric jets considered in this paper consists of a central round air jet surrounded by an annular air jet issuing into stagnant air surroundings. Detailed measurements of the mean velocity and static-pressure distributions have been made in the region close to the exit of the nozzles and the effect of varying the ratio of the velocities in the central and annular jets has been examined.

The flow field inside an annular seal with a 0.00127 m clearance was measured using a 3-D laser Doppler anemometer system. Through the use of this system, the mean velocity vector and the entire Reynolds stress tensor distributions were measured for the entire length of the seal (0.0373 m). The seal was operated at a Reynolds number of 27,000 and a Taylor number of 6,600.

In this paper, the air jet flow field model for the dual slot die is established. The flow field from the blunt die was found to exhibit that as the jet angle becomes sharper, width of the die slot and distance between the inside edges of both jets more narrow, the mean velocity under the die increases.

Profiles of the mean velocity have been analyzed in the stream streaking from the region of rotating standard six-blade disc turbine impeller. The profiles were obtained experimentally using a hot film thermoanemometer probe. The results of the analysis is the determination of the effect of relative size of the impeller and vessel and the kinematic viscosity of the charge on three parameters of the axial profile of the mean velocity in the examined stream. No significant change of the parameter of width of the examined stream and the momentum flux in the stream has been found in the range of parameters d/D ##m <0.25; 0.50> and the Reynolds number for mixing ReM ##m <2.90 . 101; 1 . 105>. However, a significant influence has been found of ReM (at negligible effect of d/D) on the size of the hypothetical source of motion - the radius of the tangential cylindrical jet - a. The proposed phenomenological model of the turbulent stream in region of turbine impeller has been found adequate for values of ReM exceeding 1.0 . 103.

Abstract Isothermal turbulent mixing of an axisymmetric primary air jet with a low velocity annular secondary air stream inside a constant diameter cylindrical enclosure is predicted. The flow domain from the inlet to the fully developed downstream locations is considered. The predicted flow field properties include the mean velocity and pressure and the Reynolds stresses. Different velocity and diameter ratios between the primary and the secondary jets have been investigated to characterize the flow in terms of these parameters. A bounded stream-wise differencing scheme is used to minimize numerical diffusion and oscillation errors. Predictions are compared with available experimental data to back up numerical findings.

This paper addresses the integral energy fluxes in natural and controlled turbulent channel flows, where active skin-friction drag reduction techniques allow a more efficient use of the available power. We study whether the increased efficiency shows any general trend in how energy is dissipated by the mean velocity field (mean dissipation) and by the fluctuating velocity field (turbulent dissipation). Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of different control strategies are performed at constant power input (CPI), so that at statistical equilibrium, each flow (either uncontrolled or controlled by different means) has the same power input, hence the same global energy flux and, by definition, the same total energy dissipation rate. The simulations reveal that changes in mean and turbulent energy dissipation rates can be of either sign in a successfully controlled flow. A quantitative description of these changes is made possible by a new decomposition of the total dissipation, stemming from an extended Reynolds decomposition, where the mean velocity is split into a laminar component and a deviation from it. Thanks to the analytical expressions of the laminar quantities, exact relationships are derived that link the achieved flow rate increase and all energy fluxes in the flow system with two wall-normal integrals of the Reynolds shear stress and the Reynolds number. The dependence of the energy fluxes on the Reynolds number is elucidated with a simple model in which the control-dependent changes of the Reynolds shear stress are accounted for via a modification of the mean velocity profile. The physical meaning of the energy fluxes stemming from the new decomposition unveils their inter-relations and connection to flow control, so that a clear target for flow control can be identified.

A turbulent round jet of helium was studied experimentally using a composite probe consisting of an interference probe of the Way–Libby type and an × -probe. Simultaneous measurements of two velocity components and helium mass fraction concentration were made in the x/d range 50–120. These measurements are compared with measurements in an air jet of the same momentum flux reported in Part 1. The jet discharge Froude number was 14000 and the measurement range was in the intermediate region between the non-buoyant jet region and the plume region. The measurements are consistent with earlier studies on helium jets. The mass flux of helium across the jet is within ±10% of the nozzle input. The mean velocity field along the axis of the jet is consistent with the scaling expressed by the effective diameter but the mean concentration decay constant exhibits a density-ratio dependence. The radial profiles of mean velocity and mean concentration agree with earlier measurements, with the half-widths indicating a turbulent Schmidt number of 0.7. Significantly higher intensities of axial velocity fluctuations are observed in comparison with the air jet, while the intensities of radial and azimuthal velocity fluctuations are virtually identical with the air jet when scaled with the half-widths. Approximate budgets for the turbulent kinetic energy, scalar variance and scalar fluxes are presented. The ratio of mechanical to scalar timescales is found to be close to 1.5 across most of the jet. Current models for triple moments involving scalar fluctuations are compared with measurements. As was observed with the velocity triple moments in Part 1, the performance of the Full model that includes all terms except advection was found to be very good in the fully turbulent region of the jet.

The flow field inside a seven-cavity labyrinth seal with a 0.00127-m clearance was measured using a 3-D laser-Doppler anemometer system. Through the use of this system, the mean velocity vector and the entire Reynolds stress tensor distributions were measured for the first, third, fifth, and seventh cavities of the seal. There was one large recirculation region present in the cavity for the flow condition tested, Re = 28,000 and Ta = 7000. The axial and radial mean velocities as well as all of the Reynolds stress terms became cavity independent by the third cavity. The azimuthal mean velocity varied from cavity to cavity with its magnitude increasing as the flow progressed downstream.

The corner wall jet is similar to the standard three-dimensional wall jet with the exception that one half of the surface has been rotated counter-clockwise by 90 degrees. The corner wall jet investigated here is formed using a long round pipe with a Reynolds number of 159,000. Contours of the mean and turbulent flow field were measured using hot-wire anemometry. The results indicate that the ratio of lateral to vertical growth in the corner wall jet is approximately half of that in a standard turbulent three-dimensional wall jet.

Laser-Doppler measurements of axial mean velocities and the corresponding rms values of turbulent velocity fluctuations are reported for premixed, axisymmetric, acetylene flames together with the probability density distributions of the turbulent velocity fluctuations. All this information provides an insight into the structure of the flow field. Characteristic zones of the flow field are defined that show common features for all acetylene flames studied by the authors. These features are discussed in the paper and are suggested to characterize, in general, interesting parts of the flames.
