Abstract The aim of this paper is to analyze Anísio Teixeira 's conception of the role of intellectuals in the process of reconstruction of the Brazilian Society during the 30 's. According to Anísio, it would be important to prepare a nation's intellectual personnel capable of assuming its directive role. This role was considered as being essentially educative, according to the conception attributed by Dewey to the notion of social directiveness. This would presuppose a new kind of intellectual, different from the Brazilian traditional elite and characterized by a scientific mentality - composed by a experimental spirit and a democratic spirit. The above mentioned conception of the role of intellectual as a conductor shaped both the organization of the University created by Anísio at Rio de Janeiro (the UDF) and his own behavior as the head of the Educational Authority of Rio de Janeiro during the period 1932-1935. The Mammal Collection of UENF was created in 2013 to document the biodiversity of northern Rio de Janeiro, and house voucher specimens collected during field research held by professors from the university and collaborating institutions. The collection currently holds 440 physical vouchers, mostly bats, and includes noteworthy records, such as the first Promops nasutus reported for the state of Rio de Janeiro. To these physical vouchers, we recently added a digital bioacoustics collection (343 files of bat distress calls) and a camera-trap multimedia collection (2683 videos or photographs of small to large-sized mammals). In this paper, we provide an overview of these holdings, and highlight and discuss the importance of regional scientific collections, along with the fundamental role of publishing their records in online databases in order to increase their visibility and scientific use. Finally, we discuss the importance of natural history collections to society, emphasizing that improving the awareness of the general public on the role of these collections to scientific development will be crucial for their conservation over the next centuries.

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to understand the role of policies in relation to the guidelines of the Democratic State of Law in Brazil. The research problem is related to understanding the directives that lead to the reformulations of the urban space and its main interests. The initial hypothesis proposes that such processes of public policy construction, when not properly planned according to democratic objectives, produce actions that are opposed by concept: they are not related to the reduction, but to the deepening of the democratic deficit. The research methodology, of historical-dialectical character, has as its analysis the bibliographic review. The exclusionary urbanization so characteristic of Brazilian society remains unscathed in many places, even in those that have undergone urbanization processes through the execution of public housing policies. What is observed are policies executed according to the dominant political-electoral forces in each government, without any attention to the purposes that should guide its elaboration and execution. As we shall mention, the case of Vila Autódromo and the Mega-Events in the city of Rio de Janeiro are the quintessence of such a hypothesis.

Nowadays, the Industry 4.0 concept affects every area of the industrial, economic, social and personal sectors. The most significant changings are the automation and the digitalization. This is also true for the material handling processes, where the handling systems use more and more automated machines; planning, operation and optimization of different logistic processes are based on many digital data collected from the material flow process. However, new methods and devices require new solutions which define new research directions. In this paper we describe the state of the art of the material handling researches and draw the role of the UMi-TWINN partner institutes in these fields. As a result of this H2020 EU project, scientific excellence of the University of Miskolc can be increased and new research activities will be started.

Accurate pronunciation has a vital role in English language learning as it can help learners to avoid misunderstanding in communication. However, EFL learners in many contexts, especially at the University of Phan Thiet, still encounter many difficulties in pronouncing English correctly. Therefore, this study endeavors to explore English-majored students’ perceptions towards the role of pronunciation in English language learning and examine their pronunciation practicing strategies (PPS). It involved 155 English-majored students at the University of Phan Thiet who answered closed-ended questionnaires and 18 English-majored students who participated in semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed that students strongly believed in the important role of pronunciation in English language learning; however, they sometimes employed PPS for their pronunciation improvement. Furthermore, the results showed that participants tended to use naturalistic practicing strategies and formal practicing strategies with sounds, but they overlooked strategies such as asking for help and cooperating with peers. Such findings could contribute further to the understanding of how students perceive the role of pronunciation and their PPS use in the research’s context and other similar ones. As universities in Australia are faced with a growth in diversity and intensity of religion and spirituality on campus, this article explores the work of chaplains and its reception by students on a multi-campus suburban university. It finds that the religious work of these professionals is not the primary emphasis in the university context; what is of greater significance to students and the university institution is the broader pastoral and welfare-support role of chaplains. We discuss these findings in relation to post-secularism theory and the scaling down of state-provided welfare in public institutions such as universities.
