Higher education is obliged to carry out education, research and community service. Through the tridarma of higher education students must actually contribute to society. This research focuses on the role of Southeast Aceh university students as Agents of Social Change. This study uses qualitative research methods with a sociological approach. The results of this study indicate that students of Southeast Aceh Islamic tertiary institutions have played a positive role in the formation of people's lives and have a very important, strategic role in the formation of moral, moral and ethical learners who are currently at the lowest point in community development. The role of Islamic education is to create and create students who are characterized or Islamic in character, who are part of the community.

Pakistan came into being on the basis of two nation theory. There are number of subjects that are offered as compulsory at the secondary level of education. Islamic education is one of the subject that is compulsory at school level in Pakistan. Being a religious subject for Muslim students studying in Pakistani schools, it is considered to be important in character building. In this study, an attempt has been made to analyze the effectiveness of Islamic education in the educational system and gauge students’ perspectives on Islamic education as a character building tool. Survey method has been used to seek the objectives of the study. The population of the study includes students of secondary schools in District SBA. The Data has been collected through personal visits by giving questionnaires to students. The Percentage has been used in the analysis of the data. Major findings of the study suggest that Islamic education helps the students to become good citizen and plays a positive role as agents of social change in their local communities. Islamic education is one field of Islamic studies who received a lot of attention from scientists. This is because in addition to a very strategic role in order to enhance human resources, as well as in Islamic education there are a variety of complex problems. Ibn Taymiyyah for example, he was known as a scholar, thinker and politician. The thinking in the field of education is a response to the various problems facing the Islamic society that demands split logically through education. Philosophy of education, he said, should be built on the foundation of monotheism, the belief in the oneness of God. Monotheism which is the basis of education include; rububiyah monotheism, monotheism asthma wa uluhiyah and nature. Based on the insights of faith is then Ibn Taymiyyah describes the purpose of education, students, teachers, curriculum and so on.

The role of unpaid and informal care is a crucial part of the health and social care system in Australia and internationally. As carers in Australia have received statutory recognition, concerted efforts to foster engagement in carer participation in work and education has followed. However, little is known about the strategies and policies that higher education institutions have implemented to support the inclusion of carers. This study has three components: first, it employs a review of evidence for interventions to support to support carers; second, it reviews existing higher education institutions’ policies to gauge the extent of inclusive support made available to student carers, and; third it conducts interviews with staff from five higher education institutions with concerted carer policies in Australia were held to discuss their institutions’ policies, and experiences as practitioners of carer inclusion and support. Results indicate difficulty in identifying carers to offer support services, the relatively recent measures taken to accommodate carers in higher education, extending similar measures which are in place for students with a disability, and difficulties accommodating flexibility in rigid institutional settings. A synthesis of these findings were used to produce a framework of strategies, policies and procedures of inclusion to support carers in higher education.

Purpose – There is evidence that students who attend Technical and Further Education (TAFE) prior to entering higher education underperform in their first year of study. The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of self-efficacy in understanding the performance of students who completed TAFE in the previous year in a first year subject of microeconomics in a dual sector university in Melbourne, Australia. Design/methodology/approach – The study utilises data collected by surveys of 151 students. Findings – A student’s self-efficacy is positively associated with their marks in a first year subject of microeconomics. However, the relationship between final marks and self-efficacy is negative for those students who attended TAFE in the previous year suggesting that they suffer from the problem of overconfidence. When holding self-efficacy constant, using econometric techniques, TAFE attendance is found to be positively related to final marks. Research limitations/implications – The findings are exploratory (based on a small sample) and lead to a need to conduct cross institutional studies. Practical implications – The research points to the need for early interventions so that TAFE students perform well in their first year of higher education. It also points to potential issues in the development of Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) programs. Originality/value – To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first paper to examine the inter-related impact of attendance at TAFE in the previous year and self-efficacy on the subsequent academic performance of TAFE students.

In special education and rural education interface we find important points about teacher training and their reflexes in the schooling of special education students in rural schools. This paper fulfills the objective of analyzing fundamental documents of the two teaching modalities in question in order to understand mainly what concerns teacher training. The methodological path used in the construction of this text was guided by documentary research of four legal documents of the two teaching modalities. In the policy interface, we saw that the investigated documentation shows concern with the quality of teacher training, although it does not deal with careers and professional development, nor with more specific aspects of the role of Higher Education Institutions in their training. In the end, it is hoped that the discussions presented here will help to promote new and denser research on the fundamental role that teachers play in rural schools.

In “At Berkeley: Documenting the University in an Age of Austerity,” Michael Mark Cohen and Leigh Raiford address documentary’s evolving capacity for political mobilization by focusing on the role of documentary photography and film in the struggle around austerity at the University of California, Berkeley. While the university administration used documentary’s graphic appeal to enlist alumni in a fund-raising campaign that effectively naturalized the privatization of public higher education, students took up documentary forms to challenge the logic of neoliberalism. Working with Cohen and Raiford, who teach at UC Berkeley, student activists produced their own counterdocuments, repurposing documentary images that the university uses to sell education in an era of skyrocketing tuition fees, and rendering themselves as active participants in the struggle to reshape the university and the broader society.

Although literature on the role of emotions in teaching and learning is growing, little consideration has been given to the university context, particularly from a sociological perspective. This article draws upon the online survey responses of 24 students who attended sociological classes on the Grenfell Tower fire, to explore the role emotions play in teaching that seeks to politicise learners and agitate for social change. Contributing to understandings of pedagogies of ‘discomfort’ and ‘hope’, we argue that discomforting emotions, when channelled in directions that challenge inequality, have socially transformative potential. Introducing the concept of bounded social change, however, we demonstrate how the neoliberalisation of Higher Education threatens to limit capacity for social change. In so doing, we cast teaching as central to the discipline of sociology and suggest that the creation of positive social change should be the fundamental task of sociological teaching.
