VARIABILITY OF THE BODY LENGTH AND WAIGHT AND FISH CAPACITY OF 4-YEAR-OLD AND 5-YEAR-OLD RUSSIAN STURGEON CULTIVATED IN THE POND FISH FARM IN THE REPUBLICK OF KAZAKHSTAN

The paper presents the analysis results of the body weight and length variability (body mass, zoological length, length up to the end of middle fin rays, fatness, mass-accumulation coefficient, growth), fish-productivity and gross-production in 4-year-old and 5-year-old Russian sturgeons ( Acipenser gueldenstaedtii , Brandt) cultivated in adapted ponds together with herbivorous fishes (grass carp ( Ctenopharyngodon idella ), silver carp ( Hypophthalmichthys molitrix ). The analysis helped to reveal some regularities about variability of 4-year-old and 5-year-old Russian sturgeons ( Acipenser gueldenstaedtii , Brandt) cultivated in artificial ponds adapted for carp breeding. The paper gives average values of body mass and length, variability characteristics, according to biological statistic parameters; analysis of absolute growth in different age groups of the Russian sturgeon cultivated at the pond carp farms. Gross-production values for 4-year-old and 5-year-old sturgeons are recommended to be taken as 337 and 450 kg/ga, correspondingly. It should be noted that 450 kg/ga is not considered as an ultimate gross-production value for the Russian sturgeon cultivated in the fish farms adapted for carp breeding.

The present study was conducted to know the culture strategies and fish health and disease problems in pond aquaculture in Mymensingh, Bogra and Pabna districts of Bangladesh. Questionnaire interview and participatory rural appraisal tools like focus group discussion (FGD) were conducted with selected fish farmers. In total 90 farmers were interviewed and 9 FGD sessions were conducted. Most of the respondents practiced carp and pangas polyculture and they had disease problems in their ponds. Prevalence of fish disease varied with cultured species and locations. The most prevalent diseases as reported by the farmers were pop eye (57.78%), ventral reddening (55.55%), tail and fin rot (48.89), hemorrhagic lesion over the body surface (45.56%), dropsy (40%), gill rot (40%), white spot (40%) and epizootic ulcerative syndrome or EUS (33.33%). According to farmers opinion most susceptible species to disease was silver carp, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix (57.78%); followed by mrigal, Cirrhinus cirrhosus (50%); catla, Catla catla (47.78%); sarputi, Barbodes gonionotus (47.78%); rui, Labio rohita (42.22%) and pangas, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus (42.22%). Higher mortality was found in pangas (53.56%). Clinically, pangas, koi and sarputi were found severely affected. Most of the farmers used some treatment measures against disease problems. This study also highlited some fish health management problems in pond aquaculture. Further studies should include identification and characterization of pathogens involved in different types of diseases in pond aquaculture. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/jbau.v11i2.19944 J. It is shown that the leading role in the aquaculture of Iraq belongs to Cyprinids, which account for over 80 % of all fish farming production. The most widespread in the country are four main world species of carp aquaculture: common carp (Cyprinus carpio), grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) and bighead carp (Aristichthys nobilis). Basically, the traditional technology of growing Cyprinids in ponds is used, which includes the main fish farming processes: care of broodstock to prepare them for spawning, collecting eggs and milt, eggs fertilization and incubation of embryos, raising juveniles and marketable fish. Currently, there are about 2 thousand private fish farms, which have ponds of various sizes from 4 to 100 hectares. Cultivation of Cyprinids in Iraq is carried out mainly by extensive methods: the use of the natural food base of reservoirs with low fish stocking density in polyculture. The fish productivity of ponds varies greatly in different fish farms from 1,5 to 6 t/ha, which is due to economic reasons. The data on changes in the temperature of pond water during the year and hydrochemical indicators are given, which shows favorable conditions for Cyprinids rearing. Information on the use of compound feeds for growing carp in ponds is provided, and data on the composition and nutritional value of the feed used. The fish culture indicators for the main biotechnical processes of the rearing of four Cyprinid species in Iraq are described in detail. In the conclusion, it is indicated that for the effective development of aquaculture in Iraq, government support is needed in the form of a developed long-term program and legislative acts.

The current paper aims to diagnose the state of fisheries of three Chinese carp species whish have been introduced in Tunisian reservoirs since 1981: (silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix, herbivorous carp Ctenopharyngodon idella and bighead carp Aristichthys nobilis) and seeks to study the benefits and risks associated with their introduction. Chinese carps cannot reproduce naturally in freshwater reservoirs. Eventually, artificial breeding operations and seeding of the dams with farm-produced fry are carried out by the Technical Centre of Aquaculture every year. Statistical analyses have shown a strong correlation between the landed quantity and the number of fries stocked each year. The impact assessment showed that the risks and benefits associated with the introduction of the three species are variable. Regarding their benefits, it was clear that the herbivorous carp has provided effective and sustainable control of the extensive development of aquatic vegetation in the eutrophic reservoirs and canal systems. The value of the other two species, though, remains less obvious, particularly for the bighead carp. The consequences of their introduction on ecosystems and native species seem to be negligible, especially when the densities are low. Eventually, it seems judicious to increase the stocking of the herbivorous carp, silver carp and bighead carp in Tunisian reservoirs.

In the context of the need to preserve the biodiversity of natural waters, the cultivation of valuable fish species for stocking natural reservoirs takes on exceptional importance. Optimization of the technology for growing sturgeon in artificial conditions has become the main goal of our research. The population used for the present study is from a fish farm, Dneprovskiy Sturgeon Fish Breeding Factory located in Belozersky district (Kherson region, Ukraine). Studies were conducted for ten years (2007–2017). The objective of our study is to assess the quality of juvenile sturgeon when grown with different durations. The research material was provided by the free embryos and larvae of Russian sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii von Brandt & Ratzeburg, 1833). Formation of experimental groups and calculation was performed on the principle of groups-analogues by standard methods. The main resultant criteria were larval survival, optimal extrinsic performance, and fish productivity. As a result of the conducted research it was determined that the optimal term of growing the larvae of A. gueldenstaedtii in the pools was 20 days. During this period, young sturgeon had high rates of average body weight with a survival rate of at least 53.4–60.2% and optimal physiological state. In variants with a maximum growth period of 24 days, the difference in the individual masses of the test material was significantly increased on the background of rather high mass indices of the larvae (1.2–1.4 and 1.9–2.1 times, respectively for II–III variant). This led to an increase in the pressure of food competition and, as a result, to a decrease in the output of young sturgeon growth of up to 46.5–61.9%. Survival of the larvae was by far the highest in the experimental groups with a minimum period of cultivation and ranged within 75.1–80.7%. The maximum level of fish productivity was observed in the third variant of the experiment with the longest period of cultivation. An analysis of the relative indicators of body weight gain revealed that with the extension of the growing period in experimental variants the percentage of realization of growth of larvae during the period of exogenous feeding was proportionally reduced. The most effective use of feed for the growth of body weight of the larva was in the variant with a growing period of 20 days. Feed costs in these groups ranged within 2.80–3.24, which averaged 2.83–3.02. Analysis of the dynamics of oscillations of the main biochemical indicators showed that the accumulation of consumables in the body of the experimental larvae increased with the growing period of cultivation in the pools. The amount of moisture was adequately reduced. The greatest influence on the results of the growth of sturgeon larvae in the pools among all the considered factors belonged to the period of cultivation, the magnitude of significance of which was 61.2%. The research results should significantly improve the technology of growing the Dnieper population of A. gueldenstaedtii on fish farms.
