An Inquiry Based Learning Experience Using K-W-L in Business Communication Presentations

Technological advancement, particularly in terms of scientific knowledge within the various fields of subject, is an important feature of the twenty-first century. In line with such technological advancement, teaching learning strategies and methods used for teaching students are not discounted (Alsalhi, 2020). The creativity of educators is even more pronounced during the pandemic (Barber, 2020) where all educators have to resort to online teaching. In such online platforms, student engagement poses a challenge for educators to gain student attention and engagement. Educators need to resort various approaches to gain student engagement. The inquiry-based-learning approach using the “K-W-L” strategy or “Know-What-Learnt” chart organizer encourages all students to take ownership and experience learning beyond the classroom context. The Business Communication students used the “K-W-L” as part of the inquiry-based learning experience to question, research, analyze, sort, and present their answers according to what they know, learn and learnt about a topic. Findings suggest student’s receptivity to the using the organizer as a learning tool. Learning occurs both outside and within the classroom whether online or offline. Learning becomes student-centered, discussing discoveries and experiences, and reflecting on new-found knowledge. Learning is not mere regurgitation of contents but is actively acquired through independent questioning.

The present study provides a description of the model of interactive digital pedagogy for remote areas and its impact on pedagogical satisfaction and academic achievement of students. This pedagogical intervention was designed to enrich and supplement the teaching-learning experience in remote and underprivileged schools through the use of technology. An interactive online teaching-learning system was set-up using a digital pedagogy. 150 school students and 80 prospective teachers from three higher secondary schools of Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu participated in the study. Pedagogical satisfaction and academic achievement of the school students who studied in this set-up were examined. The results revealed that active learning, technological competence and learner autonomy were enhanced in an online environment when compared to an offline environment.

While countries are facing different stages in their COVID-19 infection rates, worldwide there are millions of students affected by universities’ facilities closures due to the pandemic. Some institutions have enforced strategies to transfer some courses to a virtual modality, but many Dental Schools have been challenged to deal with a situation which requires emergency measures to continue the academic course in the middle of lock-downs and social distancing measures. Despite the fact that the number of online academic programs available, especially graduate programs, has increased in diverse modalities, this pandemic forced e-learning processes to develop abruptly. The likelihood of using e-learning strategies in dentistry was substantiated in the scientific literature and an overview of these opportunities is presented. Additionally, the experience of the University of Costa Rica Faculty of Dentistry is presented, as it was evident that some of the key elements in a e-learning environment needed a quick enhancement and initiation of some processes was required. First, it was necessary to categorize the academic courses depending on their virtualization's possibility (curricula analysis and classification), to better understand the extent of the impact and the work needed to contain, as far as the possibilities allowed, negative consequences on students learning process. Second, teachers needed further training in the application of virtual strategies which they hadn’t used before. do Third, an evaluation of the students’ conditions and needs was conducted in a form of a survey. Finally, teachers and students activated the available virtual platforms. For many Dental Schools, this virtualization process is an ongoing progress although it was abruptly imposed, but this moment indeed represents an enormous opportunity to move forward and get immerse in the virtualization environment as a teaching/learning experience.

The aim of this phenomenological study is to provide a deeper understanding of the impact of remote teaching on instructors’ perceptions of online learning and future teaching practices amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to analyze open-ended semi-structured interviews conducted with five higher education faculty in Saudi Arabia. Three major themes were identified: enhancing student engagement; increased awareness of technology affordances and constraints; and moving from emergency remote teaching to technology-enhanced and blended learning. Participants of this study were mainly concerned about finding ways to support active student engagement in this new learning environment, which in turn increased their awareness of the educational affordances and constraints of online learning and technologies. Participants’ deeper understanding of the potential of online technologies in supporting student learning, as well as their own and students’ increased familiarity and comfort with online learning and technologies, served as the main drivers for potential future implementation of blended learning and technology-enhanced teaching practices. With that said, participants were still apprehensive about engaging in fully online teaching, arguing that blended strategies and enhanced-technology integration are more likely to overcome some of the limitations of face-to-face teaching and improve the overall learning experience for their students. Discussion of these findings in relation to the extant literature and their implications for higher education institutions moving forward are provided.

Background: Faculty are encouraged to use a variety of teaching/learning strategies to engage nursing students. While simulation and games are now common, there were no reports in the nursing literature using an “escape room” concept. Escape rooms use an entertainment approach as teams engage in critical thinking to solve puzzles and find clues to escape a room. In the classroom setting, this concept is modified to solve a mystery by finding various objects through a series of puzzles to locate clues. Some of these games involve finding numerical clues to open locks on a box, such as a toolbox. The purpose of this study was to describe the use of a toolbox gaming strategy based on an escape room concept to help students learn about cardiovascular medications in a pharmacology course.Methods: This pilot study employed a descriptive qualitative method to investigate an approach to pharmacology education. The sample consisted of first semester nursing students.Results: Student responses to criteria-based questions resulted in three themes: engaging, teamwork, and frustration, related to using a toolbox scenario strategy as a pathway to learning.Conclusions: This descriptive study yielded mixed results from the students who were frustrated by time constraints but engaged in the learning experience. Lessons are offered for future improvements.

This chapter presents a theoretical framework and research base for the successful transition of an established Master of Science in Nursing program from that of traditional classroom delivery to one that is Web-based with no geographic limitations to students. The application of socio-technical systems theory to facilitate creation of a positive learning environment for future nurse leaders is described. Use of social processes and application of technology to optimize learning is explained and the latest research on content presentation and student engagement in an e-learning environment are presented. The authors hope that through examination of successful online teaching/learning strategies, readers will have a clear understanding of the competencies necessary for students and faculty to be successful in online education.

Quality evaluation is a basic part of education that enables teachers to help learning and to improve instructive programs. Engineering education has been confronting impressive difficulties concerning commendable educating, information organization, and knowledge deployment. Consequently, desires for new teaching methods and learning approaches should be created in the arena. The objective of this chapter is to incorporate various teaching learning methods, educational tools to improve the learning experience of students, and also to fulfil the teaching experience of faculty. The purpose of this research is also to explore the effects of innovative teaching learning strategies based on the performance of student grades. The experiment has been carried out on two courses of electrical and electronics engineering. There are no commendable measures to evaluate the learning outcomes of the student hourly basis in traditional pedagogy. Therefore, this chapter proposed various pedagogical approaches that help to achieve the desirable things.

Lean thinking is a methodology employed initially by manufacturing organizations such as Toyota and New Balance that aims to increase customer value whilst also maintaining a low level of waste. The Lean thinking tools and techniques employed in the manufacturing sector can also be transferred to other sectors and significantly improve the service or product, such as public sector organizations or Higher Education Institutions (HEI). In the current education climate, due to the pandemic (SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19), the majority of HEIs have moved to an online or hybrid teaching and learning environment. This has developed the principle that Lean thinking can be deployed in educational methods and techniques to greatly increase the level of student engagement and the efficiency of learning. The following study outlines the key waste sources found in three types of teaching–learning environments (face to face, online and hybrid) and provides practical implications to counter the non-value-added issues. The data for this study were gathered through a questionnaire from final year undergraduate engineering students. The results indicate that online teaching had the greatest effect on student engagement, based on the identification and weighted values of non-value-added issues. The study highlights the key Lean wastes within online, hybrid and face to face teaching, and provides key examples within the stated Lean waste to provide solutions to improve student engagement.

Background: Medical education has experienced a sea of change in the last decade. Covid- 19 pandemic has catalysed a drastic change in the learning experience from traditional classroom teaching to virtual education. Methods:After 4 months of online teaching at our institute, an online survey based research study was conducted on the perceptions of students and faculty of our department about online teaching. Results:Atotal of 215 students consented to participate. 63.72% felt that the clarity of presentation and audibility was good. 25.11% of students faced major problems with net connectivity. However 51.1% felt that their interaction with other students was less and 27.4% felt that their interaction with faculty was less in online classes when compared to traditional class room.34% were satised and 41.8% gave an equivocal response to satisfaction with online teaching. 12 faculty members participated in the survey. 58.33% of the faculty felt condent in meeting the technical demands of online teaching.41.66% opined that the level of student participation was less in online class. 66.66% experienced difculty in keeping their students involved in the online class. 83.33% appreciated the institutional support. 91.66% of the faculty enjoyed their new experience of teaching online. Conclusion:The students appreciated the efforts of the faculty and management in imparting education virtually as a viable option in the pandemic time. Teachers also echoed the same opinion. Blended learning could be used to enhance and complement the formal face to face teaching in medical education in the years to come.
