As time passes on, machines are becoming more and more complex, fast-processing and intelligent. Being exactly like humans deducting, inferring and making decisions is still away, however some remarkable gains in the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques and machine learning have been recently recorded. Therefore, the current study seeks to examine strategies for effectively applying artificial intelligence (AI) applications to teach/learn English according to the university students’ point of view. The study adopts the analytical descriptive approach in order to study and analyze the literature, to describe AI and the strategies of its employment for teaching/learning English. A 40-item questionnaire was used. It covers the following fields: AI strategies and its suitable applications for teaching/learning English, the effectiveness of these applications, their practical use, and the requirements for using them in the fields of teaching/learning English. Measuring the validity and reliability of the questionnaire revealed a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.931. The study sample consisted of 44 randomly selected male students from the English language stream at Northern Border University. A set of study instruments was applied. The results revealed a group of strategies suitable for employing AI for teaching/learning English. The results also indicated a very low level of employment of these strategies for teaching/learning English, and pointed out to their effectiveness if used in this field. The study has identified the training requirements from the study sample’s point of view. A suggested plan has been envisioned that includes the basics, objectives, content, processors, and evaluation methods for the employment of AI applications in the field of English education.

This study investigated learners’ conceptions of learning English and their online self-regulation in a web-based learning environment among. Two questionnaires, Conceptions of Learning English (COLE) and Online Self-regulation of English Learning (OSEL) were administered to 843 university students in China. Based on their different conceptions of learning English, participants were clustered into four groups. Two groups of students considered the process of learning English as understanding and seeing in a new way or being test-oriented. Another two groups consisted of students with high commitment to or low engagement in learning English. The results of ANOVA analysis and Scheffé’s test revealed significant differences among the profiled participants in four groups. Students who considered learning English as understanding and seeing in a new way tended to have the strongest online self-regulatory competence. However, students who were test-oriented reported poorly in all aspects of online self-regulation. Our findings echoed previous studies on the relationship between conceptions of learning English and online self-regulation, particularly the negative association between learners’ test-oriented conceptions of learning English and their online self-regulation. This research enables us to better understand English language learners in China, particularly in the era of information technology.

This study investigates Taiwanese university students’ experience of English use, aims of learning English and attitudes toward English as a lingua franca (ELF). The notion of ELF has been researched in the field of English language teaching. However, English teaching practice targeting native-speaker (NS) norms is still prevailing in English classrooms. To better respond to learner needs of using English in the age of globalization, this study explores learners’ English learning and use in relation to their attitudes toward ELF. Research methods including interviewing and questionnaire survey were employed to collect data from English majors at a university in Taiwan. The study finds that the learners were aware of the communicative value of ELF and actually used ELF in intercultural communication. The learners’ use of English in context affected their attitudes toward ELF and aims of learning English. It is found that the learners preferred English conforming to NS norms; yet, they wished to learn local variation of English concerning accents and word use. In light of the findings, the author suggests that English teachers incorporate an ELF perspective into English instruction and help learners develop intercultural awareness and competencies.
