S.W.O.T analysis is a proposed strategic analysis tool for healthcare organizations. The issues identified in the S.W.O.T. analysis are classified into four categories. From the internal environment of the service are the strength points, such as accessibility, good level of provided health services, experienced and specialized nursing staff, modern level of technological-biomedical equipment, management oriented to quality procedures, staff satisfaction and the weakness points, such as shortages of human resources and equipment, mental and physical fatigue, non-application of treatment protocols, vague nursing tasks, modest or reduced staff training, worker culture. From the external environment, there are opportunities, start-up and operation of quality assurance systems, awareness of service weaknesses, medical records, volunteering, private forms of hospital funding, multiculturalism, and threats, such as financial and values crisis, bureaucracy in day-to-day management, the presence of a significant number of migrants and uninsured people, health users’ displeasure, private care, change of epidemiological model. The purpose of the article is to highlight the application of the S.W.O.T. analysis as an important tool in the hands of nursing administration, decision-making and shaping a future strategy of health services. S.W.O.T is a useful, but not a stand-alone, strategic planning tool that promises health services to make informed decisions and leave nothing to chance in order to be efficient and competitive.

A well-used concept in business, the Critical Success Factor (CSF) is just beginning to be applied to healthcare organizations. This article discusses the utility of the CSF approach to the management of health services, explains how senior healthcare executives can use it to consider, define and direct the planning needs of healthcare organizations, and demonstrates how it can be applied in hospital management. Managers can use the CSF planning approach to achieve the organization's goals in accordance with its mission, be competitive, and evaluate and restructure existing programs to satisfy needs to meet specific objectives.

One of the development efforts in the health sector is the availability of quality health services. The clinic is a health institution that reaches out to the community directly to provide treatment to the community. In order to create excellent service, the clinic must pay attention to the services provided to patients. Patient satisfaction is very important to be considered by the clinic management. Patient satisfaction is one indicator of the success of providing health services to the community. Mitra Sandona clinic is one of the clinics located in the city of Padang. This clinic provides BPJS services to patients. Health service satisfaction is achieved if what the patient gets exceeds his expectations. To determine patient satisfaction, an analysis tool called importance performance analysis is needed. This matrix analyzes the level of expectations and experiences felt by patients. Through this matrix, the clinical management can determine which level of importance should be improved, enhanced and maintained

With the continued growth in size and complexity of healthcare organizations, trustees/directors are increasingly called upon to provide strategic leadership. In response, new recruitment methods have been adopted in order to meet the need for skilled and knowledgeable trustees. Volunteer governance models need to be carefully evaluated in comparison to government control models in order to determine how relations of accountability and responsibility change with a shift in models. The central question is whether volunteer governance remains a viable concept in Canada.

Abstract:An integrated large-scale expert system called Health-2000, for the management of health services in regions where tropical diseases are endemic, has been designed. This system combines knowledge and databases, the contents of which are operated upon by an inference engine, to produce usable information. The system allows a host of applications, ranging from medical diagnosis to fault detection and preventive maintenance of biomedical equipment. The theoretical background and approach used in the development of the fault diagnosis and equipment maintenance sub-system of Health-2000 is presented. Model-based knowledge acquisition, and an extension of the Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analysis are two methodologies applied to build its knowledge bases. The inference engine which supports backward and forward chaining, operates on numerical and non-numerical facts, and uses fuzzy logic to handle vague and uncertain knowledge. Fault isolation proceeds in a top-down fashion, from equipment sub-system, to modules and components.

The Queensland health sector has been characterised as unique. The population has traditionally relied on the public sector to provide necessary hospital and other health services across the vast distances that make up the state, although there is a strong non-government sector also. More recently, and over the last 5-6 years stability and drive at themanagement level in the public sector has supported reform and progress, consistent with the national agenda. The Queensland reputation of cost efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery and outputs to meet national standards continues as this Chapter demonstrates.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate aspects of organizational culture among the nursing staff of public mental health services organizations in Cyprus. Specifically, highlights are provided of possible differences on the attitudes of nurses regarding actual and desired aspects of organizational culture with respect to demographic characteristics such as gender, years of service and experience.Design/methodology/approachA descriptive explanatory type survey study was conducted in all public mental health services organizations of Cyprus. Specifically, a questionnaire was given to a representative sample of the nursing population, and data were collected and analyzed. The survey questionnaire was based on the organizational culture profile (OCP) methodology. Statistical analysis was carried out using correlational analysis, t-tests and analysis of variance (ANOVA).FindingsResults showed that there are significant discrepancies between the actual organizational culture and what is desired by staff members of public mental health services organizations in Cyprus. Further, significant differences are identified between actual and desired organizational culture moderated by the type of work, which is determined by the workplace.Originality/valueEven though, organizational culture is a major research topic little has been done in the context of public mental healthcare organizations. Further, for the case of Cyprus, it is the first time that such a study is carried out. The results presented in this paper may provide the foundation for measures to be taken for improving the existing operation of public mental healthcare organizations.
