To identify attitudes toward romantic behavior among college students and to construct an instrument which measures those attitudes two phases of a romantic attitude survey were administered in successive samples to a total of 787 college students. Three major dimensions of romantic love were identified as Traditional Romance, Sexual Behavior, and Routine Activities. Four additional, less stable factors also emerged but were absorbed by the three major factors in the cross-validation sample. The more salient indicaters of romance were found among Traditional Romance and Sexual Behavior factors.

This study examined attitudes related to the possibility of changing cognitions and behaviours among samples of college students in the United States and Japan. Students were asked to identify three things about themselves that they wanted to change, the method they would use to effect these changes, how difficult they thought making such changes would be, and how much they desired to make the changes. Japanese and US students differed significantly in the frequency with which they mentioned all seven aspects of the self that were targeted for change. Students in the United States expressed a desire to improve their sociability, academic achievement and cognitive abilities, physical appearance, and sense of individuality. Students in Japan were most concerned about enhancing their relationships with others, self-control and motivation, and ability to manage practical affairs. In addition, US respondents were more likely than their Japanese counterparts to use behaviour-oriented strategies, to believe it was easy to make self-changes, and to indicate a strong desire to improve the self. The findings are discussed in the context of theories describing different cultural construals of self, and of empirical research on differences between collectivistic and individualistic cultures.

Previous research, using factor analysis, derived seven dimensions of romantic love. We sought to address whether these dimensions differed in importance for women and men. Specifically, it was hypothesized that women would consider Marriage and Family, Traditional Romantic Behavior, Routine Activities, and Religion, and men would consider Sexual Behavior, Aberrant Sex, and Drugs as more romantic. These specific predictions were seen as consistent with the ‘double standard’ regarding sex, i.e., it should be more important for men, and with an earlier theory we developed in which it was argued that in addition to the ‘double standard’ for sex, security-related stimuli should be more important for women. The results were entirely consistent with our predictions.

Sexual initiation and talking about sexuality: view of university studentsAbstract: This study aimed to know the perception of university students about sexuality and to describe the sexual behavior of students in their relationships. Descriptive, qualitative research, it was conducted in a private higher education institution in Rio de Janeiro, with university students aged 18 to 29 years. Data were collected using the focus group technique, being analyzed with the technique of analysis of thematic-categorical content, with the aid of Nvivo 9.0 software. Three categories emerged, being presented in this article: relationships, sexual initiation, and dialogue with religious beliefs from the perspective of college students. The findings demonstrate that the group's sexual behaviors are influenced by culture, religiosity and gender relations, and there is an interference of these aspects in the understanding of these concepts. College students have resented the greath involvement of there parents in their sexual orientation. In addition, health education for guidance and preservation of sexual health and disease prevention in youth group is a fundamental and necessary practice.Descriptors: Sexuality, Sexual Behavior, Sexually Transmitted Diseases. This study examines differences in condom use among female and male African-American young adults; investigates how perceptions of contraceptive characteristics vary by gender; and determines which combination of contraceptive attitudes best discriminates between condom users and nonusers. In a classroom setting, 244 African-American college students completed the Contraceptive Attributes Questionnaire-2. Significantly more men than women reported condom use, both actual and intended. Women and men differed in the importance they place on contraceptive characteristics and in their perceptions of both the condom and the contraceptive pill. Finally, perceived contraceptive attributes significantly differentiated men and women who used condoms from those who did not and predicted those who reported that they definitely intend to use condoms from those who do not. These findings suggest that prevention efforts to promote condom use must be gender specific as well as culture specific if they are to be effective.

Recent changes in sexual behavior of unmarried college students raise the question as to whether or not they are accompanied by changes in conceptions of masculinity and femininity on the part of the students. Changes in conceptions of masculinity and femininity might be the consequence of differential selection into coital activity or of new role learning by those who are coitally active. Data are presented from a study of sexual behavior of 823 college students which support the latter hypothesis for males but not for females.
