A sample of 242 students between the ages of 16 and 18 years, attending schools in the North East of England, completed the Bradburn Balanced Affect Scale together with the abbreviated form of the Revised Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. The findings show that scores on the Bradburn scale (indicating psychological well-being as assessed by balanced affect) are correlated significantly and positively with scores for Extraversion (.25), negatively with Neuroticism (.52) and nonsignificantly with Psychoticism. The implications of these Endings are discussed for the assessment of psychological well-being among introverts.

This article critically explores insights into human–equine touristic experiences and acknowledges how such interconnectivity underline nature-based solutions (NBS) to mutually enhance psychological well-being. Despite the growing interest in NBS limited accounts have explored human–animal relations within the realm of touristic encounters. Drawing upon multispecies ethnographic accounts, participant observations, diaries, and in-depth interviews were held with 21 participants, with topics themed around human–equine experiences, relational encounters, and well-being. The sample was taken from participants located in the North East of England who engaged in equestrian tourism. Findings revealed life-changing transformations as a result of multispecies encounters. Deep emotional elements were experienced through intersubjectivity where participants spoke of the psychological benefits of being immersed in natural landscapes with their equine companions. This article demonstrates human–equine experiences as a positive NBS and illustrates that for the two species to effectively interact in equine-assisted psychological interventions requires mutual trust, empathy, and effective communication.

A sample of 236 16- to 19-yr.old female A level students studying in the north east of England completed the short form Revised Eysenck Personality Questionnaire together with indices of prayer and church attendance. The data support the view that psychoticism is correlated with self-reported church attendance ( r = –.15) and self-reported prayer ( r = –.15), while scores on neither extraversion nor neuroticism are correlated with these indices of religiosity.

ObjectivesSelection of effective leadership styles within healthcare is linked to high quality, safe care for patients. Within the literature attention has been given to medical and nursing professions, failing to acknowledge the contribution made by physiotherapy leaders. This study aims to consider the leadership styles used by physiotherapists in a designated leadership role, specifically exploring the barriers they face and the strategies employed to overcome current leadership dilemmas.DesignA qualitative, phenomenological design was used. Consent was obtained from each participant for one semistructured interview which was audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Framework analysis was used to analyse the data.SettingA large National Health Service Foundation Trust within the North East of England.ParticipantsA purposive sample of ten physiotherapy team leaders.ResultsThe theoretical leadership framework that emerged demonstrated the daily tensions experienced by physiotherapy team leaders in regard to being a transactional or transformational leader. Within this, three superordinate themes exist: the individual, the team and the organisation and beyond. Each theme contained barriers and enablers which related to transactional and transformational leadership styles, respectively.ConclusionsThe framework identified gives insight into a group of clinical leaders not yet explored and provides a foundation for the development of leadership behaviours throughout physiotherapy. These clinicians should be supported by senior leaders to develop more transformational styles which have the potential to impact on staff well-being and patient care. Future research should compare these findings with studies involving larger sample sizes that span the health and social care system.

The study explores the spatial patterns of poverty in Pakistan through two dimensions: asset accumulation and basic needs. For this purpose Pakistan Standard of Living Measurement 08-09 is employed to construct an Asset Index and a Basic Needs index, at a district level, through the use of household level indicators. The study finds a clear north south divide, with particular concentration of better off districts in the north east of the country. Additionally, regression analysis is carried out to help identify the macro level factors contributing towards the observed pattern. Results reveal infrastructural and industrial development to be significant factors behind a district‘s well-being. This indicates that public policy directed towards developing deprived districts should be cantered on these factors, specifically expanding road networks, and incentives for industrial development in those districts. Building industry is the largest world energy consumer at 40% of total world energy. Various agencies across the world have formulated Sustainability Assessment (SA) methods for its assessment. In India, TERI and Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Govt. of India, have established GRIHA as the assessment guideline for the built environment. SA methods recommend a pre-design check list and post completion assessment of the projects. The major parameters of evaluation aim to address environmental, social and economic impact on well- being of society. A comparison is drawn on the broader definition of sustainability which has been adopted world over and it is felt by local practitioners that the parameters need to be adapted to deal with local situations and conditions for effective results. This paper attempts to review the various assessment parameters considered under the GRIHA model in the design evaluation of the built environment considering local conditions in specific locations in the north east. The paper infers to devise a normalization factor to help achieve equalized balance in achieving sustainability.

This paper discusses a participatory arts-based research project undertaken with a refugee support organization in the United Kingdom, the Regional Refugee Forum North East (RRFNE), and a local women's group. The project used photography, storytelling, and walking methods to explore ways of seeing women's lived experiences, well-being, and sense of community in the context of their lives in the North East of England. Arts-based biographical methods, predominantly photo-walks, were undertaken within a participatory action research frame. Together the women cocreated a collective story that involved collaborative knowledge production as well as corporeal attunement and empathic witnessing through walking their stories of living in the North East of England.

Different forms of social support as affecting psychological health were studied on a sample of 71 unemployed British Asian men in the north of England. Social support was measured in respect of five different forms of help from others. Measures were also obtained of psychological distress, financial strain, employment commitment and unemployment stigma. Family support and specifically support immediately after loss of job were found to have positive effects on unemployed men's psychological health. The findings are discussed along the lines of existing empirical evidence and the need to examine longitudinally the impact of social support on the psychological well-being of other ethnic minority groups is emphasized.

SynopsisThis paper presents the results of a study of unemployment among British Asians living in the north of England. The sample comprises 139 employed and unemployed men. Using standardized psychological questionnaires with a semi-structured interview schedule, the psychological consequences of unemployment are examined in relation to other psychosocial variables. The results showed that the unemployed group had lower levels of psychological well-being, selfesteem, and employment commitment with high external beliefs, than the employed group. Length of unemployment was a significant determinant of psychological well-being and respondents with a longer period of unemployment had a lower level of psychological well-being than those who had been unemployed for a shorter period. The findings are examined in the context of existing empirical evidence, and the need to examine the psychological impact of unemployment among other British Asian groups is emphasized.

Many factors, e.g. individual constitutional peculiarities and climatic conditions, influence human health. A peculiar regional reaction norm can be formed for many body systems of the northerners in the process of adaptation. This norm depends both on environmental factors and on the individual typological constitutional peculiarities. Schooling has an impact not only on the child’s psychological state, but also on their immune and endocrine status. Psychological well-being is often determined by the level of neuroimmunoendocrine regulation through intercellular interaction mediators (interleukins), neuropeptides and hormones. Advances in molecular and cellular biology, genetics, and neurochemistry have contributed to the spread of knowledge about the most important nervous processes – cognitive functions, emotional coloring, motor skills and behavior. The aim of the study was to determine the influence of the gender-related immuneendocrine status of primary schoolchildren of low-numbered peoples of the North on psychological. Materials and Methods. The study enrolled 79 children, aged 7–10, who were going to a secondary comprehensive school in Beloyarsk, Priuralsky district, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The authors used enzyme immunoassay to determine dopamine, testosterone, cortisol, serotonin, interleukin-4 and γ-interferon levels. The Luscher color test was used as a psychological test. It is based on the experimentally established correlation between the preference for certain colors (shades) and the current psychological state of a person. All test colors are objective indicators with accurately measured frequency, they are absolutely the same for all cultures, educational levels, gender, age, and race. IBM SPSS Statistics ver. 22.0 (IBM Co., Armonk, NY, USA) was used for data processing. Conclusion. The immuneendocrine status of primary schoolchildren does not depend on gender. However, in primary schoolgirls, depending on their psychological characteristics, significant differences were found in such blood parameters as interferon, cortisol, and dopamine. Keywords: immuneendocrine status, primary schoolchildren, Luscher test. 22.0 (IBM Co., Armonk, NY, USA).

Ras a1 Khaimah is the most northerly of the seven states comprising the United Arab Emirates and its Ruler, H. H. Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammad al-Qasimi, is keenly interested in the history of the state and its people. Survey carried out there jointly with Dr D. B. Doe in 1968 had focused attention on the site of JuIfar which lies just north of the present town of Ras a1 Khaimah (de Cardi, 1971, 230-2). Julfar was in existence in Abbasid times and its importance as an entrep6t during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries-the Portuguese Period-is reflected by the quantity and variety of imported wares to be found among the ruins of the city. Most of the sites discovered during the survey dated from that period but a group of cairns near Ghalilah and some long gabled graves in the Shimal area to the north-east of the date-groves behind Ras a1 Khaimah (map, FIG. I) clearly represented a more distant past.
