Abstract This article analyses the relationship between black humor and dystopian literature. In dystopia, humor can appear on the surface as language or situational comics, but there is also a deeper link between these two literary phenomena: they confront the reader with an unexpected notion in order to bring him to a critical reflection. There are many dystopias in the Nordic literature that use comic elements. Three of them are discussed in this article: Axel Jensens Epp (1965), Lena Anderssons Duck City (2006) and Kaspar Colling Nielsens Den danske borgerkrig 2018–24 (2013). The analysis shows that classic black humor is enriched with other tragicomic, satirical or surrealistic elements and significantly contributes to the critical tone of the text. In all cases humor is used for the same purpose, and this is a critique of superior power (the so-called superiority theory). Therefore, humor can be considered not only as a stylistic means, but also as a principle of construction of the dystopian works.

In this paper we are interested in the connections between Philosophy for Children and character education. In sketching these connections we suggest some areas where the relationship is potentially fruitful, particularly in light of research which suggests that in practice schools and teachers often adopt and mix different approaches to values education. We outline some implications of drawing connections between the two fields for moral education. The arguments made in this article are done so in the hope of encouraging further critical reflection on the potential relationship between Philosophy for Children and character education.

Against the backdrop of a critical reflection on the psychiatric concepts of organicism and predisposition to mental illness, the research investigates the relationship between psychiatry and the Great War from a perspective that considers the complexity of the orientations assumed by both the Italian alienists on war pathologies and the health practices implemented towards soldiers. The study highlights the comparison/clash between two totally different approaches forced to coexist during the conflict: on one side, the one from military psychiatry, and on the other the distinctive one from civil asylums. The two perspectives were not always clearly separated, but it is possible to detect a constant tension between the duties towards the war effort and the professional ethics dictated by the neuropsychiatric discipline.

The aim of this article is to reveal the relationship between the author of the first dystopia, Yevgeny Zamyatin and a totalitarian regime, by means of analyzing the biography and selected works of that writer; the analysis of the novel We – a prophecy novel, which can be regarded as an exaggerated depiction of the Stalinist regime; the analysis of the influence Zamyatin’s novel had on – far more famous – works by George Orwell and Aldous L. Huxley, as well as on the anti-utopia genre (dystopian literature) in general.

This paper investigates the impact of venture start-up simulation on participants’ learning; it is concerned specifically with the relationship between experiential learning theory and critical reflection within venture start-up simulation. This was carried out in empirical investigation of a simulation training game used to train entrepreneurs in a formal setting. The findings show significant improvement in their knowledge of finance, marketing operations and information use. Participants reported increased skills and intended behavioural changes in their own ventures. Finally, there was empirical support for the fact that critical reflection during experiential learning can greatly improve the standard of learning and has an immediate effect on  participants’ behaviour.

This article argues that sociologists have much to gain from a fuller engagement with dystopian literature. This is because (i) the speculation in dystopian literature tends to be more grounded in empirical social reality than in the case of utopian literature, and (ii) the literary conventions of the dystopia more readily illustrate the relationship between the inner life of the individual and the greater whole of social-historical reality. These conventional features mean dystopian literature is especially attuned to how historically-conditioned social forces shape the inner life and personal experience of the individual, and how acts of individuals can, in turn, shape the social structures in which they are situated. In other words, dystopian literature is a potent exercise of what C. Wright Mills famously termed ‘the sociological imagination’.

IntroductionSeveral reviews have reported the incidence of schizophrenia in patients with eating disorders (ED) to be between 3–10% and the incidence of transient psychotic episodes to be 10–15%. On the other hand, anorexia nervosa appears to affect 1 to 4% of schizophrenia patients. Reports of psychosis and ED occurring in the same patient have led to various views as to the nature of the relationship between the two.ObjectiveAnalysis of the literature illustrated by different clinical cases in which appears to be a relationship between ED and psychosis.AimsCritical reflection about the hypothesis that could underlie the comorbidity of psychotic illness and ED.MethodsNon-systematic review of a literature search using the keywords: eating disorders; psychosis; comorbidity.ResultsThere is no consistent sequence in the co-occurrence of the two conditions – ED sometimes precede and sometimes follows the onset of psychosis. ED patients can develop psychotic symptoms, most frequently transient in the course of the disorder, while others are subsequently diagnosed with a chronic psychotic disorder. On the other hand, patients with a primary psychotic illness can develop an eating disorder. The connection between the two, however, remains speculative, considering the hypothesis that ED and psychosis can be entirely separate disorders that can, by chance, occur in the same person.ConclusionsThe area of comorbidity and overlapping symptoms in psychiatry requires more deep research. Despite evidence from case series, the comorbidity between ED and psychosis is poorly understood, and firm conclusions cannot be drawn from this analysis.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

ResumoO presente artigo visa discutir, a partir do livro Arte e delírio - reflexões sobre a cultura no Amazonas, escrito em 1985, pelo Diretório Universitário da Universidade do Amazonas (UA), pilares importantes que geraram uma reflexão acerca do pensamento artístico no Amazonas. O livro é composto por cinco ensaios, e cada escritor correspondeu a sua verve: Antônio Paulo Graça discutiu a literatura no Amazonas pela dialética da dependência; Aldísio Filgueiras retratou a relação entre a literatura e poder; Narciso Lobo propôs um diálogo sobre representação de identidade através do filme de Bodanzky, Iracema - uma transa amazônica; Bosco Ladislau promoveu uma reflexão sobre o desenvolvimento da pintura no Amazonas; e finalmente Dori Carvalho, por meio de sua experiência pessoal, encetou uma discussão sobre o teatro na cidade de Manaus. Artistas da geração de oitenta, mobilizados pelas ações da UNE, propõem uma reflexão crítica, sobretudo, aos artistas amazônicos, de como resistir diante de um painel histórico cercado por heranças colonialistas. Ainda, por meio de outros pensadores, pretende-se acrescentar a discussão, na medida do possível, um olhar atual de alguns dos temas levantados pelos autores.AbstractThis article aims to discuss, from the book Arte e delírio - reflections on culture in Amazonas, written in 1985, by the University Directory of the University of Amazonas (UA), important pillars that generated a reflection about artistic thought in Amazonas. The book consists of five essays, and each writer corresponded to his own verve: Antônio Paulo Graça discussed literature in Amazonas through the dialectic of dependency; Aldísio Filgueiras portrayed the relationship between literature and power; Narciso Lobo proposed a dialogue on identity representation through Bodanzky’s film, Iracema - an Amazonian sex; Bosco Ladislau promoted a reflection on the development of painting in Amazonas; and finally Dori Carvalho, through her personal experience, started a discussion about theater in the city of Manaus. Artists of the eighty generation, mobilized by the actions of the UNE, propose a critical reflection, above all, to Amazonian artists, of how to resist before a historic panel surrounded by colonialist inheritances. Still, through other thinkers, it is intended to add the discussion, as far as possible, a current look at some of the themes raised by the authors.

In this paper, I (S. L. Deibert) share my story of discovering the relationship between reflexivity, autoethnography, and yoga through a meaningful experience. Yoga has been an important influence on my physical and mental well-being for over a decade, but I did not consider its implications in my academic life until I was asked to write a reflexive assignment for a course. The task was exploring who I am in connection to my master’s thesis project; the challenge was finding a starting point for my reflexive journey of self-discovery. Frustrated by the latter, I turned to yoga for refuge; instead of escaping the assignment, I found that my quest for self-exploration was intertwined with my yoga practice. The purpose of this paper is to delve further into my experience with yoga as a medium for developing reflexivity. Using autoethnography, I share my journey of developing critical thinking through a narrative related to my yoga class experience. Linking my research to my yoga practice allowed me to better understand myself as a person and researcher, become mindful of how my own views shape my experiences, and develop a deeper level of critical reflection. Overall, this work demonstrates the experience of a connection between yoga, reflexivity, and autoethnography, and adds to the sparse literature exploring the intersection of these three.

OTEN (Open Training and Education Network) is the TAFE institution which was formerly known as the External Studies College of TAFE and which in 1990 changed its name to the Open College and more recently to OTEN. The fact that the word "open" is now incorporated in its name is significant in so far as its role is perceived to have changed from distance to open education.</span>
