The purpose is to improve the power and innovate the communication mode of mainstream I&P (Ideological and Political) education in C&U (Colleges and Universities). The opportunities and challenges that I&P education is facing or will face in media times are analyzed from three factors: the subjective, the mediator, and the environment, which affect the power of mainstream I&P in C&U. Educational means, carriers, resources, places and times, and the interactions between educators and the educated can bring opportunities for the improvement of the educational power of C&U. However, there are great challenges in all aspects of the mainstream ideology, such as education methods, education ideas, education content, education leadership and discourse power, and network public opinion control. Finally, a series of measures are proposed to improve the power of mainstream I&P education in C&U in media times, and they are updating the concept of media education, strengthening the ideological guidance, ensuring the direction of mainstream I&P education, and optimizing the media environment so that a more perfect innovative mode of I&P education is constructed. The research enriches and develops the theory of mainstream I&P education in C&U, innovates the methods of mainstream I&P education in C&U, and enhances the power of mainstream I&P education.

Purpose This study aims to investigate the relationship between board diversity and financial performance from a wide perspective, including multiple dimensions of board diversity. Design/methodology/approach The cross-sectional design of the FTSE 350 companies in the period of 2013–2019 was adopted in this study. Data were collected using the Thomson Reuters Eikon and BoardEx databases and analyzed via ordinary least Squares (OLS) regression. Findings Both gender and skill diversity positively affect financial performance. However, other dimensions of diversity, including board tenure, education and network, have no significant influence on financial performance. On the other hand, nationality diversity negatively affects financial performance, and the gender diversity of executive directors negatively affects market-based performance. The results remain unchanged after considering endogeneity concerns and using alternative measures of financial performance. Practical implications This study provides useful insights into the importance of board diversity and its implications for firm performance, which can help in the development of future regulations and policies, such as female representation on the board. The findings can also guide companies toward the best way of diversifying their boardrooms in different aspects. Originality/value This study extensively investigates board diversity, including gender, tenure, skill and education, network and nationality, using the lens of the resource dependency theory. It also extends the scope of the study to examine some characteristics of executive directors, including gender and age. The evidence is provided from one of the leading countries in regulating corporate governance (CG), i.e. the UK.

Popularly known as “chalky teeth”, molar hypomineralisation (MH) affects over 1-in-5 children worldwide, triggering massive amounts of suffering from toothache and rapid decay. MH stems from childhood illness and so offers a medical-prevention avenue for improving oral and paediatric health. With a cross-sector translational research and education network (The D3 Group; thed3group.org) now highlighting this global health opportunity, aetiological understanding is urgently needed to enable better awareness, management and eventual prevention of MH. Causation and pathogenesis of “chalky enamel spots” (i.e., demarcated opacities, the defining pathology of MH) remain unclear despite 100 years of investigation. However, recent biochemical studies provided a pathomechanistic breakthrough by explaining several hallmarks of chalky opacities for the first time. This article outlines these findings in context of previous understanding and provides a working model for future investigations. The proposed pathomechanism, termed “mineralisation poisoning”, involves localised exposure of immature enamel to serum albumin. Albumin binds to enamel-mineral crystals and blocks their growth, leading to chalky opacities with distinct borders. Being centred on extracellular fluid rather than enamel-forming cells as held by dogma, this localising pathomechanism invokes a new type of connection with childhood illness. These advances open a novel direction for research into pathogenesis and causation of MH, and offer prospects for better clinical management. Future research will require wide-ranging inputs that ideally should be coordinated through a worldwide translational network. We hope this breakthrough will ultimately lead to medical prevention of MH, prompting global health benefits including major reductions in childhood tooth decay.

The ever-changing needs of society justify the necessity for teachers to engage in continuous learning. Teachers are encouraged to participate in professional development activities that will help them develop the knowledge and skills that are required to meet the needs of a 21st century society. It is recognised that access to professional development has increased since Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) became an option for in-service teachers who traditionally found it difficult to access certain professional development activities because of distance and lack of convenience.A survey was administered to 72 respondents to capture the experiences of in-service teachers from the Caribbean, who participated in a MOOC offered by the Inter-American Teacher Education Network (ITEN). The survey explored the MOOC participants’ perception of the MOOC as a source of professional development, as well as the extent to which they applied the content learnt in the ITEN MOOC. The findings of this research show that 95% of the participants perceived the ITEN MOOC to be an effective source of professional development and were able to apply the content to their professional context. The findings further suggest that MOOCs across the globe provide an opportunity for in-service teachers to forge partnerships and establish learning communities that will improve their professional knowledge and skills.

Abstract Background Adjuvant chemotherapy reduces the risk of recurrence of stage III colon cancer (CC). However, more effective prognostic and predictive biomarkers are needed for better treatment stratification of affected patients. Here, we constructed a 55-gene classifier (55GC) and investigated its utility for classifying patients with stage III CC. Methods We retrospectively identified patients aged 20–79 years, with stage III CC, who received adjuvant chemotherapy with or without oxaliplatin, between the years 2009 and 2012. Results Among 938 eligible patients, 203 and 201 patients who received adjuvant chemotherapy with and without oxaliplatin, respectively, were selected by propensity score matching. Of these, 95 patients from each group were analyzed, and their 5-year relapse-free survival (RFS) rates with and without oxaliplatin were 73.7 and 77.1%, respectively. The hazard ratios for 5-year RFS following adjuvant chemotherapy (fluoropyrimidine), with and without oxaliplatin, were 1.241 (95% CI, 0.465–3.308; P = 0.67) and 0.791 (95% CI, 0.329–1.901; P = 0.60), respectively. Stratification using the 55GC revealed that 52 (27.3%), 78 (41.1%), and 60 (31.6%) patients had microsatellite instability (MSI)-like, chromosomal instability (CIN)-like, and stromal subtypes, respectively. The 5-year RFS rates were 84.3 and 72.0% in patients treated with and without oxaliplatin, respectively, for the MSI-like subtype (HR, 0.495; 95% CI, 0.145–1.692; P = 0.25). No differences in RFS rates were noted in the CIN-like or stromal subtypes. Stratification by cancer sidedness for each subtype showed improved RFS only in patients with left-sided primary cancer treated with oxaliplatin for the MSI-like subtype (P = 0.007). The 5-year RFS rates of the MSI-like subtype in left-sided cancer patients were 100 and 53.9% with and without oxaliplatin, respectively. Conclusions Subclassification using 55GC and tumor sidedness revealed increased RFS in patients within the MSI-like subtype with stage III left-sided CC treated with fluoropyrimidine and oxaliplatin compared to those treated without oxaliplatin. However, the predictive power of 55GC subtyping alone did not reach statistical significance in this cohort, warranting larger prospective studies. Trial registration The study protocol was registered in the University Hospital Medical Education Network (UMIN) clinical trial registry (UMIN study ID: 000023879).

This research aims to identify the critical factors that influence the formation and development of the interorganizational networks that have emerged within incubators of technology-based firms in Brazil. For this purpose, semi-structured interviews were conducted with startups form two networks of incubated companies (Education Network and Technology, Information and Knowledge Companies Network) and two incubators (Center of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Technology — CIETEC — and Incubator of Technology-Based Companies of Itajubá — INCIT). As a result, this study found eight critical factors: Actions by entrepreneurs, leadership, shared spaces, facilitation, network management, financial and brokerage, which can be framed in four characteristics: heterogeneity of the firms, lack of cooperation, interactions and the actions of the incubator. As a contribution, this research allows reflection on the effectiveness of the incubator, in addition to highlighting the complementarity of networks in the incubation processes. The study analyses different models of incubated firm networks that have been little explored as an object of study in the incubation literature and networks and what is the role of the incubator in each of these models.
