AbstractThis paper presents the results of experimental investigations on six reinforced concretebeams, with three different shear span-to-depth ratios, which were tested under two-pointloading. The aim of the work was to study the efficacy of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer(CFRP) strips in enhancing shear capacity and/or changing the failure mode from brittleshear failure to ductile flexural failure. The results of the study indicate that while thereis a marginal increase in first crack and ultimate loads, it is possible to achieve a changein the failure mode, and the monitored strain gauge data can be used to explain the failurepattern observed.

When glass fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bar splices are used in reinforced concrete sections, they affect the structural performance in two different ways: through the stress concentration in the section, and through the configuration of the GFRP–concrete bond. This study experimentally investigated a new method for increasing the bond strength of a GFRP lap (two GFRP bars connected together) using a carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheet coated in epoxy resin. A new splicing method was investigated to quantify the effect of the bar surface bond on the development length, with reinforced concrete beams cast with laps in the concrete reinforcing bars at a known bending span length. Specimens were tested in four-point flexure tests to assess the strength capacity and failure mode. The results were summarised and compared within a standard lap made according to the ACI 318 specifications. The new method for splicing was more efficient for GFRP splice laps than the standard lap method. It could also be used for head-to-head reinforcement bar splices with the appropriate CFRP lapping sheets.

The viability of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) laminates for the strengthening of corrosion damaged reinforced concrete bridge girders is addressed in this paper. Ten reinforced concrete beams (100 × 150 × 1200 mm) with variable chloride levels (0-3%) were constructed. Six beams were strengthened by externally epoxy bonding CFRP laminates to the concrete surface. The tensile reinforcements of three unstrengthened and four strengthened specimens were subjected to accelerated corrosion by means of impressed current to 5, 10, and 15% mass loss. Strain gauges were placed on the CFRP laminates to monitor and quantify tensile strains induced by the corrosion process. Following the corrosion phase, the specimens were tested in flexure in a four-point bending regime. Test results revealed that CFRP laminates successfully confined the corrosion cracking, and the total expansion of the laminate exhibited an exponential increase throughout the corrosion process. All the strengthened beams exhibited increased stiffness over the unstrengthened specimens and marked increases in the yield and ultimate strength. The CFRP strengthening scheme was able to restore the capacity of corrosion damaged concrete beams up to 15% mass loss.Key words: CFRP laminates, corrosion, confinement, expansion, load tests, strengthening, bond strength, reinforced concrete.

Many older bridges feature capacity deficiencies. This is mainly due to changes in code provisions which came along with stricter design rules and increasing traffic, leading to higher loads on the structure. To address capacity deficiencies of bridges, refined structural analyses with more detailed design approaches can be applied. If bridge assessment does not provide sufficient capacity, strengthening can be a pertinent solution to extend the bridge’s service lifetime. For numerous cases, applying an extra layer of textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) can be a convenient method to achieve the required resistance. Here, carbon fibre-reinforced polymer reinforcement together with a high-performance mortar was used within the scope of developing a strengthening layer for bridge deck slabs, called SMART-DECK. Due to the high tensile strength of the carbon and its resistance to corrosion, a thin layer with high strength and low additional dead load can be realised. While the strengthening effect of TRC for slabs under flexural loading has already been investigated several times, the presented test programme also covered increase in shear capacity, which is the other crucial failure mode to be considered in design. A total of 14 large-scale tests on TRC-strengthened slab segments were tested under static and cyclic loading. The experimental study revealed high increases in capacity for both bending and shear failure.

In this paper, behaviour of nine (09) RC beams (including two control beams) after unbonding and exposing flexural reinforcement has been studied which were intentionally designed and detailed to observe flexural and shear failure. Beams have been divided into three groups based on failure mode and unbounded and exposed reinforcement. Beams have been tested under two-point loading up to failure. Experimental results are compared in terms of beam behaviour with respect to flexural capacity and failure mode which revealed that the exposed reinforcement does not altered flexural capacity significantly and unbondedness positively influences shear strength; however, serviceability performance of beams with unbonded and exposed reinforcement is less.

Reinforced concrete (RC) beams containing a longitudinal cavity have become an innovative development and advantage for economic purposes of light-weight members without largely affecting their resistance against the applied loads. This type of openings can also be used for maintenance purposes and usage space of communication lines, pipelines, etc. RC beams are primarily loaded in the plane of the members, which are two-dimensional in a plane stress state and the dominant structural behaviours include bending, shear, or combination of both. In the present study, six numerical models of RC beams with and without openings were simulated by using commercial finite element software ANSYS to evaluate the structural behaviours of those beam models under the partial uniformly distributed load. Different parameters were assessed, including opening dimensions and shear reinforcement ratios. The obtained numerical results were analysed and verified and were found very close to those obtained from the experimental investigations in the literature. The increase of shear reinforcement ratio could enhance the flexural and shear capacities of the RC beams, and the results also showed that some models sustained flexural failure while the others sustained failure of combined bending and shear.


Concrete, a mixture of different aggregates bonded with cement, first developed around 150BC in Rome has been bedrock to the modern Infrastructure. It is used to build everything from roads, bridges, dams to sky scrapers. Strengthening concrete is traditionally done by using steels but the developments in technology in recent decades allowed to use fiber reinforced plastics which are externally bonded to concrete . Such composite materials offer high strength, low weight, corrosion resistance, high fatigue resistance, easy and rapid installation and minimal change in structural geometry. This study investigates the behavior of reinforced concrete beams bonded with fiber composites. A numerical study is conducted to study the behavior of RC beam under Static third point loading. Concrete beam specimens with dimensions of 150 mm width, 300 mm height, and 2600 mm length are modelled. These beams are externally bonded with Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) sheets and Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) sheets. In present study, we examine the performance of reinforced concrete beams which are bonded with GFRP and CFRP sheets with various thicknesses (1, 2 & 3 mm) using ABAQUS in terms of failure modes, enhancement of load capacity, load-deflection analysis and flexural behaviour

Abstract In the construction industry, there are several methods which have been used to improve the capacity and effectiveness of structural concrete structures. Engineers can extend the life of the structures by implementing strengthening techniques. One of the techniques to strengthen columns and beams is the use of jacketing. The strength of the structural members is enhanced through the surface structural bonding of materials such as Carbon-Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP), Glass-Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP), ferrocement, steel angles, steel plates, wire mesh and so on. In this study, 18 reinforced concrete short columns of cross-sectional size 60 mm × 60 mm and 500 mm height were cast using concrete grade 30 MPa. The columns were subjected to compressive axial loads till failure. Moreover, the damaged columns were strengthened using three structural strengthening techniques namely, Reinforced Concrete Jacketing (RCJ), Reinforced Concrete Wire Mesh Jacketing (RCWJ) and, Steel Jacketing (SJ). The columns strengthened using RCJ and RCWJ had a cross section of 120 mm × 120 mm while SJ had a cross section of 66 mm × 66 mm. Six different configurations were used for each technique. The experimental investigations showed a minimum increase of 48.0%, 48.7% and 35.2% in the axial compressive strength when strengthened using RCJ, RCWJ and SJ respectively. Among the three strengthening techniques, SJ was determined to be the effective technique on considering structural design, time production and costs.
