Summary This article presents one of the many possible interpretations of Thomas Mann’s The MagicMountain without drawing an definitive conclusion. Hans Castorp’s experiences at Davos are explored in the context of the ritual of initiation and regeneration featured in Friedrich Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy. In Mann’s novel Castorp’s encounter with the death-tainted sanatorium routine carries a suggestion of an absorption into a community performing its rituals. However, unlike the Nietzschean mysteries these rituals pull its participants into a unregenerative circle of formlessness. In the initiation ritual the descent (kathodos) should be followed by an ascent (anodos). In the Hades of the Berghof Hans Castorp can be seen to dive into the recesses of his own memory, the primeval memory of mankind, the secrets of the human body and the depths of the subconscious. However, his dip does not issue in an ascent. His grip on reality remains at best enigmatic; he is not able to break out of the narrow compass of the sanatorium. When he returns to the plains, to historical time, it is a descent to the hell of war. To sum up, whereas the Dionysian myth is associated with the motif of a fertile underworld, Castorp is not likely to experience regeneration.

The chapter clarifies Husserl’s phenomenological approach to embodiment by explicating his analytical concepts and his transcendental arguments concerning the constitution of living bodiliness (Leiblichkeit). The chapter argues that Husserlian phenomenology does not establish any simple opposition between naturalistic and phenomenological inquiries but instead offers a comprehensive account of the many senses of the body operative in human practices, including the practices of the sciences. The human body is given, not just as a material thing, but also as an instrument, as an agent, and an expressive stylistic whole. The second part of the chapter discusses recent applications of Husserlian philosophy of embodiment in the investigation of human plurality. By analyzing the exemplary phenomena of sexuality and sexual difference, the chapter demonstrates that the phenomenological concepts of style and stylistic unity can serve investigations into the diversity of human embodiment in its many forms.

Tho’ the Art of Chymistry is at present much improved, and abounds with many excellent and useful Experiments; yet it must be acknowledg’d, that hitherto there has been made but a very little Progress in the Philosophy of it; and that Men are still to seek for the Reasons of the many strange Phænomena it produces.

In the Introduction, we explain what this book is about and why it is significant. The book concerns the question of whether the many ordinary objects of which Descartes speaks—including tools, automata, animals, plants, the human body, the human being, families, and nation states—have any place in his metaphysical system, or whether they should be eliminated from a properly Cartesian scientific worldview. This study is significant both for challenging the standard reductionist and eliminativist readings of Descartes’ natural philosophy and for offering a different way of thinking about such issues in contemporary debates. The introduction offers the reader a quick tour through the chapters, giving a concise overview of the aims and structure of the entire book.

In a paper published in the second volume of the second decade of the Medical Commentaries of Edinburgh, I mentioned a design of endeavouring to trace the influence of a cold climate on the human body and its diseases, which should form a contrast with the many accounts published of late years relative to the effects of hot climates; and I likewise mentioned my having given a detached piece, some years ago, as a commencement of the subject, in the fixty-eighth volume of the Philosophical Transactions of London, which contains matter necessary to illustrate some parts of the following Dissertation.

Extrafiscalidade. Direitos fundamentais. Sustentabilidade.Abstract: Without water the human body does not survive. It is not just the human species, but all living things need water, animal or vegetable. Having that in mind, and considering the current problem of water scarcity in the country and the recent recognition by the UN of the human right to water and sanitation, it is evident the urgency in the search for ways to preserve this element that is indispensable for maintaining life. The extra-fiscal taxation of the supply of drinking water is one of the many options for governmental actions that could be used with the purpose of safeguarding so precious good. However, a more in-depth analysis of the possible tributary types to fulfill this function is essential, especially as regards their advantages and disadvantages. Keywords: Water. Taxation. Progress in technologies, notably in vivo and in situ methods, has equipped scientists with the necessary skills to explore the living human body in increasingly minute detail. This has led to a better understanding of the dynamic interplay between the various elements that make up the living human body. To further understand the interplay, this research focuses on the insights and observations of the founders of osteopathy, who placed great importance on the role of fascia in the body. Modern anatomical investigation still relies heavily on dissection to describe the structural organization of living organisms. Therefore, at present, a major challenge faced by modern anatomists is to move towards a more holistic and integrative understanding of the unity, continuity, and dynamic interplay between the various elements that come together to create the living human form.

With the many and vast advances of technology across generations and societies, the need to determine the best ways to align and use the human body in coordination with technology has increased accordingly. While occupational hazards and accidents date back to ancient times, and the Industrial Age resulted in accidents related to machinery, the human disabilities and debilities related to technology may emerge more subtly over time before they become acute.

The main force driving technical development of the radiocarbon dating technique is the wide spectrum of applications that cross interdisciplinary boundaries of Earth and social sciences. This paper provides a very brief overview of some of the many applications of 14C analysis to various studies of human origin and migration, cultures and history, past and present environment, and the human body itself.
