The study of the mixing of language codes on a par with linguistic and extralinguistic factors that determine peculiarities of the equal functioning of two (or more) languages in a communicative act or in a literary text, in particular an anglophone literary text, is studied at the interdisciplinary level and is relevant. Traditionally, the phenomenon of mixing language codes is considered as a separate aspect of language interactions, as well as in the context of such linguistic phenomena as: borrowings, interference, bilingualism, diglossia, code switching, etc. The interest of linguists to language mixtures arose in the middle of the 20th century. This is evidenced by works in the field of structural phonology theory, information theory, bilingualism theory, considering successfully coexisting language systems (two or more). In linguistics, as in the other interdisciplinary studies, today debates about the nature of bilingualism and the prerequisites for its occurrence take place. Traditionally, bilingualism is considered to be a forced phenomenon arising from the established use of two languages in society. However, we emphasize that the so-called tradition of using several languages in speech is not always present in society, unlike the Anglophone postmodern literature of the last century, where the presence of language mixtures (foreign language insertions) is one of the characteristic features. The key issue of this article is the Anglophone literary text created by bilingual bi-cultural writers using the strategy of language mixing (code switching) not only as a language game, but also as a full-fledged linguistic phenomenon, the mechanism of interaction of components of language insertions, demonstrating a certain style, cultural way of portrayed social and linguistic environment. The aim of the study is to analyze the language and speech activity of the characters of a certain language group on the material of the Anglophone literary text.

The article is devoted to the study of code switching mechanisms in terms of language contacts in the space of literary texts. It considers the main concepts of the code switching theory. The research focuses on the classification of code switching functions in the space of a literary text (based on the novel Shantaram by G. D. Roberts). The relevance of the study is determined by the usage of modern literary text as a research material. The literary text is at the same time a product of “artistic communication in the culture of post-literacy” [1, 57] and a linguistic object that represents the literary norms of various languages, as well as dialects and colloquial forms of the languages presented. The article highlights the causes and goals of using various codes within the framework of a single communicative act in bilingual speech. As a result, the functional and linguistic features of code switching are analyzed and various classifications are described. Keywords: code, code switching, multilingualism, language contacts, communicative act

Code-switching is a natural linguistic phenomenon for individuals who understand and use two or more languages interchangeably. Grosjean (2010) argues that code-switching will likely occur to bilingual speakers’ speech. Hoffman (1991) confirms that a code-switching is a form of speech creativity of bilinguals. Recently, studies have shown that code-switching is also found on TV commercials in some multilingual countries. In Indonesia alone, Da Silva (2014) has investigated the frequency of English words in Indonesian TV advertisements and Sintya’s (2017) study also disseminated products whose advertisements were Indonesian-English code-switching. The present study further explored particular ads, food products for code-switching, and the types of code-switching used. The findings revealed Indonesian-English switches and demonstrated intra-sentential switching as the dominantly used switch in the advertisements. The study proposed to investigate the public perspective on such code-switching and the impacts towards the public interest of purchasing the products. Lastly, the author finds it important to view the

This paper discusses the importance of working with a literary text (especially poetry) in the context of the foreign language (FL) classroom. In order to facilitate FL teaching, language teachers are encouraged to use poetry and rhetorical devices occurring in such texts (e.g. rhymes, alliteration, metaphor etc.). The paper offers some teaching procedures and techniques based on rhetorical devices, which may prove valuable in raising FL students’ motivation and language awareness while having fun analyzing quality literary texts.

The debate over literary writing in a foreign language has instigated a lot of dichotomous points of view in Moroccan academic and cultural circles. History of modern Morocco has witnessed strong ongoing debates about the identity of creative writings in foreign language. There are those who would consider such writings as cultural alienation. Contrary to that, there are those who refuse to link literary text to language belonging, and link it instead to the collective imaginary and to the literary product as a manifestation of this imaginary. In fact, expressing the self by using a foreign language puts into question notions such as cultural identity, authority, nation-building, and otherness. By applying the theory of hierarchical reading which appeared in the post colonial studies, we have established the relationship between using French in creative writings and La Francophonie as a colonial ideology imposed on people and annexed spaces.

Social networking services, such as Facebook, are important channels of communication both for monolingual users and for those having various degrees of proficiency in L2, with the latter deploying expression both from L1 and L2. It can, therefore, be presumed that communication on FB plays a role in practicing the use of L2. One of the phenomena that can be examined in relation to that are various forms of code-switching. There is animmense research gap related to Polish-English code-switching appearing on this SNS. To obtain a full picture of the issue, the paper identifies and discusses types, strategies, and functions of Polish-English code-switches found in posts and comments published by Poles on Facebook in 2014–2019. It also indicates possible applications of FB tools and materials including CS in foreign language teaching and learning and shows how Facebook enables “social learning” (Mallia, 2013). The research is based on a corpus constructed by the author of this article. An integrated approach with both qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis is used in the paper. Three main CS types (intrasentential, intersentential, and tag-switching) and strategies (alternation, insertion, and congruent lexicalisation) have been attested in the material. The code-switches mostly indicate in-group membership but also, for example, introduce humor, quotes, and signal a lack of L1 equivalents. The study points out that there are certain relations between the types, strategies and functions. The resultsof the research are collated with the recent studies on Polish-English and Indonesian-English CS on Facebook.

The relevance of the monograph is determined, first of all, by the fact that contemporary national literatures are increasingly interacting with each other through translation, and thus the need to consider translated works in comparison with the originals is increasing. Studying the features and patterns of the literary translation is an important area of modern comparative studies. The work focuses on ways of preserving the national and cultural component of the translated text. The works of M. Gogol, Lesia Ukrainka, I. Franko, F. Dostoievskyi, R. Kipling, and J. Conrad were analyzed according to this aspect. A comparative idea of a dialogue is proposed. It is noted that translation is a broad dialogic process between the author and the reader through the interpreter, which includes reception and interpretation. Literary translation is interpreted as the basis for establishing a dialogue between the text and the interpreter, as an expression of the meaning that flows through the prism of the translating consciousness and enriches it, as a co-creation of the writer and interpreter, the purpose of which is mutual understanding, and the result of this understanding is the text-translation. Attention is paid to the issue of intertextuality as a translation problem. Despite the understanding of intertextuality as the interaction between the texts by different authors (text in text) and the interrelation between different works of one author, the thesis proposes to expand the scope of interpretation of this term, adding to it also different interpretations of one work in the same language. In the monograph the problem of reception and interpretation of literary text is considered in the imagological aspect. In particular, the study of reception and interpretation of other national character in a foreign language discourse plays an important role. Foreign language reception and interpretation of laughter culture in general and «Gogol laughter» in particular are thoroughly investigated. A deep analysis of the works of M. Gogol and F. Dostoevsky made it possible to conclude that the carnival colour of Gogol's «pure, folk-festive» laughter and the parody and comic intonation of F. Dostoevsky during translation give rise to certain problems of preserving their identity. It is noted that the perception of colour in a literary work is a peculiar way of interpreting it, and the semantic nuances of colour markings in one language or another require the problem of the reception adequacy and the interpretation of colour when translating from language to language. The practical importance of the monograph is determined by the possibility of using its basic provisions and results as an additional source of information for further comprehension of the translational paradigm in the comparative dimension.
