Orientation leaders (OLs) play a vital role on college and university campuses. They are primarily responsible for transitioning new students into institutions, yet little is known about the learning and development outcomes of the experience. This study compares longitudinal data from 10 years of orientation leader cohorts measuring their pre-, mid-, and post-learning across a set of seven institutionally endorsed student development outcomes (SDOs). Findings indicate growth across all of the seven SDOs within each year but not from year to year. It makes a case that the orientation leader experience has a significant impact on student leader development.

SummaryRegular surveillance testing of asymptomatic individuals for SARS-CoV-2 has played a vital role in SARS-CoV-2 outbreak prevention on college and university campuses. Here we describe the voluntary saliva testing program instituted at the University of California, Berkeley during an early period of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in 2020. The program was administered as a research study ahead of clinical implementation, enabling us to launch surveillance testing while continuing to optimize the assay. Results of both the testing protocol itself and the study participants’ experience show how the program succeeded in providing routine, robust testing capable of contributing to outbreak prevention within a campus community and offer strategies for encouraging participation and a sense of civic responsibility.

Undergraduate student orientation leaders play a vital role in many new student orientation programs. Although the leaders assume many responsibilities, little is known about how these students benefit from this experience. This qualitative study examined what students learned from being student orientation leaders. Students’ learning occurred in four areas: intrapersonal growth, skill development, understanding of others, and understanding of the institution. Results of this study highlight the benefit of incorporating upper division leaders into orientation programs. In addition, it illustrates how new student programs provide a valuable experience for upper-division continuing students as well as new students in transition.

The rapid development of mobile phones and communication networks is profoundly changing the lives of people in China. With the gradual growth of Wi-Fi on college and university campuses, Chinese schools are setting off a wave of teaching reform combining online material with traditional classroom instruction. We adapted a Chinese University massive open online course physiology course into a private university online course, specifically designed for second-semester bachelor’s level nursing students at Taishan Medical University. This online course blended with classroom teaching was offered to 108 freshmen from two parallel reform classes. A third class of 55 students was offered the traditional classroom lecture-based course as a control. Impressive teaching effects were achieved in reform classes, as indicated by significant improvement in student performance on the final examination and positive student feedback. The student surveys showed that 68% of students preferred the blended course over traditional classroom courses. The most highly rated advantages of the blended course were flexible learning time (84%) and improvement of independent study skills (75%). As higher education enters the internet era, exploiting the high-quality cyber resources may be the fastest and most economical way to improve teaching efficiency and enhance students’ study experience.

Chinese international students have been the largest growing number of international students on U.S. college and university campuses for the last ten years. However, there is minimal research literature that pertains to Chinese international students’ experiences on U.S. campuses and currently no research literature that reflects the entirety of their experience studying in the U.S. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to give a voice to Chinese international students who are preparing for the university-to-work transition to better understand their experiences as international students in the United States, specifically the types of transitional stressors they experienced and how they coped with these stressors. Five major themes and the essence of the participants emerged from the data analysis and are presented, discussed, and implication for campus based mental health professionals are provided.

This systematic review article focuses on Vygotsky’s Sociocultural approach in the context of early childhood education which focuses on the teaching of learning and development that can be achieved through the sociocultural environment of students. This article is built by conducting previous studies or literature highlights to obtain information related to Vygotsky's sociocultural approach which refers to aspects of teaching-learning and student development. Meanwhile, this article reporting method uses optional reporting items for systematic study and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) or Systematic Literature Review (SLR) article adapted for current research review while using two main databases namely Scopus and Web of Science. Thus, this search effort has resulted in a total of 26 articles that have been systematically censored and analyzed and then the survey successfully formulated the six main themes contained in Vygotsky's sociocultural approach namely, Social theme, Language theme, Process theme, Meaningful learning theme, Constructor theme- knowledge, and Artifacts. In total, further analysis of the six themes has resulted in five sub-themes. The findings of this study have delved deeper into sociocultural from Vygotsky’s perspective as a basis for child development.

Abstract: The COVID-19 crisis has dramatically impacted university education as well as created new challenges for tertiary learning institutions. The pandemic has exacerbated graduate unemployment and increased student dropout rates. In response to these unprecedented challenges, universities are formulating more student development initiatives to support new students to transition into university and produce holistic graduates with essential soft skills. Student engagement evaluation can help inform and enhance the implementation of student development programs. In this study, seven domains of first year university students’ engagement were evaluated namely Academic Engagement (AE), Beyond-class Engagement (BE), Intellectual Engagement (IE), Online Engagement (OE), Peer Engagement (PE), Student-staff Engagement (SE) and Transition Engagement (TE). This study found that university freshmen’s Online Engagement (OE) was the strongest while their Academic Engagement (AE) was the weakest. This study also discovered that first year university students’ engagement were weakest with regard to reading of textbooks before attending class, asking questions in class and borrowing books from the university library. Future student development programs targeted at first year university students could be enhanced by increasing the use of ICT in teaching and learning as well as increasing efforts in assisting new students to transition from school to university learning environments by inculcating good reading habits and encouraging active class participation. The Number of administrators and staffers on university campuses has increased so rapidly in recent years that often there is simply not enough work to keep all of them busy. I have spent time in university administrative suites and in the corridors of public agencies. In both settings I am always struck by the fact that so many well-paid individuals have so little to do. To fill their time, administrators engage in a number of make-work activities. They attend meetings and conferences, they organize and attend administrative and staff retreats, and they participate in the strategic planning processes that have become commonplace on many campuses. While these activities are time consuming, their actual contribution to the core research and teaching missions of the university is questionable. Little would be lost if all pending administrative retreats and conferences, as well as four of every five staff meetings (these could be selected at random), were canceled tomorrow. And, as to the ubiquitous campus planning exercises, as we shall see below, the planning process functions mainly to enhance the power of senior managers. The actual plans produced after the investment of thousands of hours of staff time are usually filed away and quickly forgotten. There is, to be sure, one realm in which administrators as-a-class have proven extraordinarily adept. This is the general domain of fund-raising. College and university administrators have built a massive fund-raising apparatus that, every year, collects hundreds of millions of dollars in gifts and bequests mainly, though not exclusively, from alumni whose sense of nostalgia or obligation make them easy marks for fund-raisers’ finely-honed tactics. Even during the depths of the recession in 2009, schools were able to raise money. On the one hand, the donors who give selflessly to their schools deserve to be commended for their beneficence. At the same time, it should still be noted that, as is so often the case in the not-for-profit world, university administrators appropriate much of this money to support—what else?— more administration.

Higher education today is faced with many challenges. However, behind some of those challenges are potential opportunities. One in particular is the focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion, and especially the unpacking of systems and processes that are increasingly becoming more prevalent in higher education's ecosystem of support, mainly for Indigenous students. This is due in large part to the global shift in the rising diverse student populations across college and university campuses. Indigenous students are entering today's evolving college landscape with a clear sense of purpose. To take advantage of this opportunity, institutions are pivoting their support structures to also facilitate their diverse student populations and learning outcomes. They are developing programs to make sense of the Indigenous student experiences, issues, challenges, and are paying special attention to strategies and infrastructures designed to safeguard their student success.
