This article presents a qualitative study of 44 Women of Color undergraduate student survivors’ perceptions of campus sexual assault prevention programming using the framework of standpoint theory. Participants held perceptions concerning online training prior to college, the in-person presentations they attended during new student orientation, and the lack of information relayed through prevention programs about sexual assault perpetration. Findings highlight the need for continued research investigating the standpoints of Women of Color students to better inform implementation of prevention efforts.

This study aimed at exploring the perceptions of students and teachers regarding the viability of the online problem-based learning (PBL) approach. The study also aimed to report the perceived merits and demerits of online PBL and offer suggestions to improve it further. To achieve these objectives, a qualitative exploratory study was conducted at the College of Medicine, The University of Lahore from July 2020 to November 2020. Employing purposive sampling, 12 students and 11 teachers were recruited, with experience in both online and face-to-face PBL. The perceived merits and demerits of online PBL were inquired in focus group discussions. Moreover, suggestions to improve the online PBL environment were elicited from both stakeholders. The data was recorded, and then inductively coded and thematically analysed using Atlis.ti software. Students displayed active participation, improved learning and self-regulation during online PBL. The participants valued online PBL as a resourceful, convenient and flexible learning strategy. Some demerits of online PBL were also reported, including student passivity, low motivation and poor concentration, which were mainly attributed to the lack of physical presence. Suggestions to improve the online PBL environment included virtual use of simulation patients and infographics, faculty development, student orientation and technical support. We conclude that online PBL can be used as an effective strategic alternative to face-to-face modality. However, certain challenges exist in online PBL that can jeopardise students’ learning processes. Efforts need to be made to fully capture the essence of the online PBL environment.

This study proposes a mobile application as a new approach for first-year student orientation to promote knowledge of library services using the gamification concept. The application is based on mobile devices with GPS to locate students, allowing them to catch, collect, and battle monsters around the library with questions on library service instructions. To evaluate the learning effectiveness of the approach, we performed a comparative experiment in which the control group used e-learning, while the experimental group used the mobile application of the CMU Journey. We evaluated the pre-and post-test scores, delayed 1-month post-test scores, and intrinsic motivation based on the IMI questionnaire. The results demonstrated that the preference for gamified experience among students can enhance knowledge retention and intrinsic motivation compared to other groups.

This orientation session was designed to prepare students for their final MBA Capstone project, leverage lessons learned from graduates, transfer prior learning about teams and project management, and launch consulting projects with actual clients. Companies have used orientation sessions to onboard new employees for many years to improve productivity and innovation. Comparatively, the use of student orientation sessions is an understudied area. Our exploratory survey of 68 Capstone students on the completion of their course indicates that they benefit from this session, and subsequently have demonstrated marked improvement in teamwork and client deliverables according to their professors. This article addresses the elements of the orientation session that can be replicated and implemented by other professors teaching similar courses. We recommend that future research continue to examine this pedagogy.

Purpose Competitive universities try to improve their reputation to attract the best students as university reputation is a significant factor affecting the decision of a student. In this context, universities need a systematic management plan to improve their reputation among the stakeholders. This study aims to identify the factors affecting university reputation with the University Reputation Model. This model includes quality of services, emotional appeal, employee competence, academic leadership, student orientation, and social responsibility as possible factors affecting university reputation. . Design/methodology/approach Survey methodology was used in the current study. A total of 1000 questionnaires were collected from the stakeholders: students, alumni, academic and administrative staff. A structural equation modeling technique was used to analyze the data. Findings According to the results, quality of services and emotional appeal affect university reputation directly. Furthermore, employee competence, academic leadership, and student orientation have indirect effects on university reputation with the mediating effect of quality of services. Besides, emotional appeal mediates the effect of student orientation and social responsibility on university reputation. Originality/value A University Reputation Model is developed to explore significant direct and indirect effects of employee competence, academic leadership, student orientation, and social responsibility on the quality of services, emotional appeal, and university reputation. Furthermore, a measurement instrument applicable to various stakeholders of a university is developed. Additionally, large-scale data is collected from the stakeholders in Turkey to increase the validity of the findings.

This paper explores the work the Student Transitions and Family Engagement (STFE) team did to convert dynamic in-person experiences into virtual programs, advising, and courses. These opportunities were framed through the lenses of Academic and Social Integration (Tinto, 1975; Braxton et al., 2004), Belonging (Strayhorn, 2019), and Transition Theory (Schlossberg, 1981).  The COVID-19 pandemic caused disruptions in every sector of business and higher education and student affairs was not immune to these effects. The unprecedented disturbances to business-as-normal forced student affairs professionals to find innovative ways to welcome new students into their universities. This article details the monumental programmatic changes employed, as well as the challenges faced and lessons learned by the New Student Orientation and First-Year Experiences teams at the University of Colorado Denver. While catalyzed by unfortunate circumstances and necessity, many of the new ideas and methods developed during 2020 will be adopted as mainstays in STFE’s suite of operations and programmatic offerings.

Implication Statement The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in changes to clinical clerkship delivery including decreased surgical exposure. The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Dalhousie University developed a novel, resident-led learning experience using a curated presentation of operative footage. This session aimed to improve medical students’ orientation to the operative environment and supplement teaching on pelvic anatomy and gynaecologic surgery in response to decreased exposure during the COVID-19 pandemic. Medical students perceived this session as valuable and felt it improved their preparedness for the operating room. This initiative has the potential to improve medical student orientation to the operative environment.
