Background Each ethnic group has different nasal cavity geometries. The reference value of the minimal cross-sectional area (MCA) and the nasal volume (NV) is mandatory for rhinologic evaluation in regular practice and for research. This study was designed to study the normal value of acoustic rhinometry (AR) in Asian subjects in comparison with other ethnic groups. Methods AR was performed in 135 healthy Thai subjects. Subjects were divided into two groups: group I, with normal anterior rhinoscopic appearance; group II included subjects with asymptomatic, slightly deviated nasal septa. Results The mean of the MCA was 0.61 ± 0.60 cm2 before decongestion and 0.64 ± 0.14 cm2 after decongestion. The mean distance from the nostril to the point of MCA (D) was 1.66 ± 0.59 cm before decongestion and 1.41 ± 0.74 cm after decongestion. The mean of the NV measured between 0 and 4 cm was 3.66 ± 0.67 cm3 before decongestion and 4.18 ± 0.75 cm3 after decongestion. Before decongestion, there were no significant differences in the mean of the MCA, D, and NV between group I and group II subjects; however, there were significant differences in mean MCA and NV after decongestion. There were no differences in the parameters between male and female subjects before decongestion, except for the D, but after decongestion the mean values of the MCA, D, and NV were significantly higher in male subjects compared with female subjects. Conclusion The results of this study can be used as a reference value for Asian ethnicities. Thai subjects had measurements comparable with those of the European study and somewhat different from the study in black populations.

The study was conducted in department of physiology, B J Medical College, Ahmedabad from Mar. 2012 to Feb. 2013. This was a cross-sectional study to evaluate the effect of smoking on lung   function and serum lipids in asymptomatic smokers   and comparable non   smokers. The mean of the various spirometric parameters were calculated of the subjects for both the groups. The mean FVC in group I and group II was 2.60 ± 0.62 L and 4.10 ± 0.64L respectively. The mean FEV1 in group I was 1.91 ± 0.57L and     3.19 ± 0.77L in group II Group I had mean FEF25% - 75% and PEFR of 1.98 ± 0.67L/sec and 4.50 ± 1.57L/sec respectively. Group II had mean FEF25 – 75% of 4.22 ± 1.23L/sec and a mean PEFR of 7.22 ± 1.42L/sec. In young smokers and asymptomatic, still the spirometric values were significantly deranged as compared to controls. Even smokers with history of less pack years of smoking also had significant abnormalities of lung function. All he spirometric values in the two groups had statistically highly significant difference and were higher in non-smokers as compared to smokers. Introduction: Nephropathies, as one of the multiple extrahepatic features of Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection, can occur in clinically improved HEV hepatitis patients which in majority of the cases remain clinically silent for a long period. By the time these are reported, patients have already developed renal insufficiency which may even lead to renal replacement therapy. Proteinuria, a simple test in practice, can be a useful tool for early detection of the underlying renal impairment. Objective: The aim of this study was to detect the presence of proteinuria and to evaluate the degree of proteinuria in HEV- hepatitis patients during post-icteric state. Materials and Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted on 50 diagnosed patients of clinically improved HEV-hepatitis at the Department of Biochemistry, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) with active cooperation of the Department of Hepatology, BSMMU, between July 2006 and June 2007. Cases were chosen carefully, to exclude the acute state of illness and the patients of HEV were selected during their third or fourth follow-up, in their post-icteric phase. The study subjects were grouped according to equal age ranges in group-I (18-26 year) and group-II (27-35 year). Depending on the level of spot urinary protein (mg/dl) the subjects were also categorized as having trace, mild and moderate proteinuria. Results: The mean age of HEV infected subjects was 24.72±2.59 years. The mean spot urinary protein in age group-II patients was raised compared to age group-I and the difference was highly significant (p<0.001). Moreover, there was no significant difference (p>0.05) of spot urinary protein of male and female. Majority of HEV patients (42%) presented with mild proteinuria and mostly (53.3%) was of age group-I. Conclusion: Spot urinary protein concentration should be checked in every HEV- hepatitis patient to detect the presence and level of proteinuria. To investigate the short-term vestibular habituation, we performed the 4 successive velocity step tests on 28 volunteers, the peak velocity of which was 100 deg/sec with acceleration and deceleration of 100 deg / sec 2 . As the repeated rotations might alter the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), sinusoidal rotations at a frequency of 0.16 Hz were also given before and after the 4 successive velocity step tests to investigate the changes of gain and phase of VOR. The 28 volunteers were divided into two groups, group I and II, according to their responses to repeated rotations. In group I (25 subjects, mean age 23.7 year), the mean values of the slow cumulative eye position (SCEP), the time integral of eye velocity during nystagmus, was reduced after each trial of the 4-successive velocity step tests as follows; 403.4 ± 29 degree (1st trial), 346.2 ± 37 degree (2nd trial), 278.3 ± 33 degree (3rd trial) and 256.6 ± 36 degree (4th trial). The time constant of the nystagmus was also reduced as follows; 12.9 ± 0.78 second (1st trial), 12 ± 0.63 second (2nd trial), 9.7 ± 0.78 second (3rd trial) and 9.9 ± 0.54 second (4th trial). In group II (3 subjects, mean age 28.3 year), the mean values of SCEP gradually increased; 774.3 ± 135 degree (1st trial), 1127 ± 178 degree (2nd trial), 1096.3 ± 123.4 degree (3rd trial) and 1225.7 ± 199.7 degree (4th trial). The time constant of the nystagmus increased; 15.7 ± 2.7 second (1st trial), 22 ± 4.5 second (2nd trial), 22.3 ± 3.3 second (3rd trial) and 23.3 ± 5.7 second (4th trial). The gain of vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) induced by sinusoidal rotations at a frequency 0.16 Hz increased in both groups: 0.59 ± 0.03 to 0.78 ± 0.06 (group I) and 0.65 ± 0.07 to 1.15 ± 0.06 (group II). Phase changes were also observed. In group I, the phase was shifted from 0.6 ± 0.6 degree to − 0.40 ± 0.6 degree. In group II, the phase was shifted from 3.67 ± 1.86 degree to − 0.33 ± 0.33 degree. The repeated rotation did not induce a common nystagmic response in all subjects. Thus, person to person variations should be considered in short term vestibular habituation.

Background Postoperative subscapularis dysfunction after open shoulder stabilization has recently received increasing attention. The potential advantage of arthroscopic stabilization procedures is that they do not violate the subscapularis musculotendinous unit, which might preserve its structural integrity and clinical function, which would lead to superior clinical results. Hypothesis Arthroscopic shoulder stabilization does not lead to clinical and radiological signs of subscapularis insufficiency. Study Design Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods Twenty-two patients who underwent arthroscopic (group I, n = 12; average age, 30.9 years; mean follow-up, 37 months) or open (group II, n = 10; average age, 28.8 years; mean follow-up, 35.9 months) shoulder stabilization procedure were followed up clinically (clinical subscapularis tests and signs, Constant Score, Rowe Score, Walch-Duplay Score, Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index and Melbourne Instability Shoulder Score) and by magnetic resonance imaging (subscapularis tendon integrity, cross-sectional area, defined muscle diameters, and signal intensity analysis [ratio infraspinatus/upper subscapularis and infraspinatus/lower subscapularis]). A third group (group 0) of 12 healthy volunteers served as a control. Results Clinical signs for subscapularis insufficiency were present in 0% of cases in group I and in 70% of cases in group II. There were no statistically significant differences in either group regarding Constant Score, Rowe Score, Walch-Duplay Score, Western Ontario Shoulder Instability Index, and Melbourne Instability Shoulder Score (P > .05). On magnetic resonance image, no subscapularis tendon ruptures were found. The cross-sectional area, the mean vertical diameter, and the mean transverse diameter of the upper and lower subscapularis muscle portion was significantly less in group II than in group 0 (P < .05). The signal intensity analysis revealed the infraspinatus/upper subscapularis ratio was significantly lower in group II than in group I or group 0. The infraspinatus/lower subscapularis ratio did not significantly differ in all 3 groups (P > .05). Conclusion This study confirms previous observations that open shoulder stabilization using a subscapularis tenotomy may lead to atrophy and fatty infiltration of the subscapularis muscle, resulting in postoperative subscapularis dysfunction. As expected, arthroscopic procedures do not significantly compromise clinical subscapularis function and structural integrity. However, no significant differences were observed in the overall outcome.

Apart from local lesions, the presence of dental plaque may also have an effect on health, especially in people with general diseases. The aim of this project was to assess the oral hygiene of patients prosthetically treated at the Dental Prosthetics Clinic of the University Dental Clinic in Krakow (Poland) using fixed and removable dentures and to determine the demographic relationships and data related to the education of the respondents. The research material consisted of 120 patients who used fixed (group I) and removable (group II) restorations. Basic dental examinations and oral hygiene examinations were carried out with the use of the API (Approximal Plaque Index) and PI (Plaque Index) plaque indices. This study presents the percentage of respondents in terms of sex, place of residence, and education. The mean PI (plaque index) values were 46.73% (Group I) and 50.05% (Group II). (p = 0.4839). The mean values of API (Approximal Plaque Index) amounted to 65.14% (Group I) and 68.94% (Group II) (p = 0.4695). Patients using dentures showed insufficient oral hygiene, and the hygiene status of patients did not depend on the type of dentures used. The group that is most often treated with prosthetics is women with secondary education. The most numerous group of patients at the Dental Prosthetics Clinic are people living in large cities which results from easier access to health care.

This study aimed to establish radiographical parameters concerning the tipping, the labiolingual positioning and the angulation of the maxillary permanent incisors in the mixed dentition. Three groups of 20 cephalograms and 20 orthopantomographic radiographs taken from children aging from 7 to 12 years old, with normal occlusion were compared. The Group I presented only the eruption of the central permanent incisors, the Group II presented both the central and lateral permanent incisors and the Group III presented central, lateral incisors and permanent canine teeth. The tipping and the labiolingual positioning were measured, respectively, using U1/PP and U1↔AVERT. Mesiodistally, the angles between the teeth axis and the line that touched the lower border of the orbit in the orthopantomographic radiographs were measured. The mean values of tipping, labiolingual positioning and angulation of the central and lateral incisors obtained from Groups I, II and III were respectively 112°, 1.2mm, 90.4° and 91.7°; 112°, 2.6mm, 89.5° and 96.8° and. 114°, 2.7mm, 87.4° and 92.6°. The tipping levels were similar for all groups, the mean values of the labiolingual positioning were significantly different at 5% when Group I was compared to both Groups II and III.And the mean values of the angulation were significantly different 5% for the central incisors between Groups I and III, and at 1% for the lateral incisors between Groups I and II, and, II and III.

Objectives: To determine and compare the levels of HDL-c and VLDL-c between Diabetic with/without dyslipidemia with normal healthy controls and risk of Cardiovascular disease. Study Design: Cross Sectional Comparative study. Setting: Multidisciplinary Lab I, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Army Medical College, Rawalpindi. Period: 2 years January 2016 to January 2019. Material & Methods: Total 90 subjects were enrolled in three groups i.e., group I comprised of 30 patients of Diabetic dyslipidemia, group II consisted of 30 patients of Diabetes without dyslipidemia and group III consisted of 30 healthy normal controls. Demographic and clinical data were collected. Data collected was analyzed by SPSS version 22. Results: Male to female ratio included in group I was 1:1.73 and in group II and III was 1:1.5 each. Mean value of the HDL-c among group I was significantly lower as compared to controls. Mean values of the triglycerides (TG) among group I and group II were significantly elevated as compared to the controls. Most of the subjects of group III were doing exercise as part of everyday routine. Conclusion: The HDL-c and TG (VLDL-c) levels are perturbed significantly among Diabetic dyslipidemic patients as compared to Diabetic non-dyslipidemic patients and normal healthy controls. Exercise is an important factor missed by patients to manage their disease.

Purpose: Radical resections and invasive techniques have been mostly replaced with more conservative techniques. The aim of this study was to assess the objective and the subjective functional and aesthetic outcomes of transcutaneous suture tip plasty. Methods: A total of 20 patients were included in the study. Patients were treated with transcutaneous suture tip plasty. Functional results were assessed with pre- and postoperative 6-month Sino-Nasal Outcome Test (SNOT-22) and acoustic rhinometry. The pre- and postoperative 6-month mean values of first minimal cross-sectional area (MCA1), second minimal cross-sectional area (MCA2), the distance from the tip of the probe to the first minimal cross-sectional area, the distance from the tip of the probe to the second minimal cross sectional area, nasal volume 1, and nasal volume 2 were measured. Facial analysis was made with the Rhinobase software, designed for facial analysis. Results: The mean pre- and postoperative SNOT-22 scores were 25.55 ± 6.64 and 15.70 ± 8.11, respectively ( P < .05). The mean pre- and postoperative nasolabial angles were 82.26º ± 5.69º and 101.47º ± 7.70º, respectively ( P < .05). The mean pre- and postoperative nasofrontal angles were 144.30º ± 3.81º and 138.25º ± 3.26º, respectively ( P < .05). The mean pre- and postoperative nasal length was 54.22 ± 4.62 mm and 49.95 ± 2.75 mm, respectively ( P < .05). The mean pre- and postoperative tip projection was 25.77 ± 3.64 mm and 28.40 ± 2.97 mm, respectively ( P < .05). Only postoperative MCA2 values on the right and left side were significantly different from preoperative MCA2 values ( P < .05). None of the remaining postoperative acoustic rhinometry scores significantly differed from preoperative scores. Two patients (10%) required revision at around 1 month after surgery due to suture loosening and breakage. Conclusions: Especially in the era of minimal invasive surgery, transcutaneous suspension tip plasty is promising, with rapid and reliable functional and cosmetic results. Further studies with longer follow-up durations are needed to assess the long-term outcomes of this technique.

Background: Vitamin B3 (Niacin) is known to decrease LDL‐cholesterol, and triglycerides, and increase HDL‐cholesterol levels. The evidence of benefits with niacin monotherapy or add‐on to statin‐based therapy is controversial. Aim: To determine the effects of vitamin B3 with statins on lipid profile of patients of angina pectoris with dyslpidemia. Study Design: Randomized control trial study. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Biochemistry, Shaikha Fatima Institute of Nursing & Health Sciences (SFINHS), Lahore with collaboration of Cardiology OPD of Shaikh Zayed Hospital Lahore from 1st November 2019 to 31st January 2020. Methodology: Seventy four diagnosed cases of angina pectoris with dyslipidemia were recruited with age range from 30 to 50 years. They were divided into two groups; Group I contained 36 patients as controlled group which was given treatment of angina with Tab. Rovista (statin) 10mg at dinner for treatment of dyslipidemia and Group II contained 38 patients as case study group which was given treatment of angina with Tab. Rovista (statin) 10 mg at dinner and tablet Vitamin B3 500 mg with single OD dose at day time for treatment of dyslipidemia for 8 weeks. Results: The mean serum cholesterol levels at zero level (before the start of treatment) of group I was 244 mg/dl and group II was 246 mg/dl, LDL of group I was 169 mg/dl while group II was 170 mg/dl and HDL of group I was 20 mg/dl while group II was 19 mg/dl . After the treatment group I which taken only statins for treatment of dyslipidemia the mean serum cholesterol levels was 210 mg/dl, LDL was 144 mg/dl and HDL was 26 mg/dl while the mean values of group II (taken statin as well as vitamin B3) serum cholesterol level was 192 mg/dl, LDL was 122 mg/dl and HDL was 44 mg/dl. The results shown there were significant effects of statin therapy along with vitamin B3 on serum LDL and serum HDL levels. Conclusion: There were significant effects of statin therapy along with vitamin B3 on serum LDL and Serum HDL levels. Key Words: Vitamin B3, Serum Cholesterol, Serum LDL &HDL

Background Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common cause of severe physical disability in childhood. These limitations may cause lower level experience or quality of life (QoL). Physical therapy (PT) plays a central role in managing CP. Objective To compare QoL in CP children with PT more and less than 10 months and to compare gross motoric level before and after PT. Methods A cross sectional study was performed from June 2012 to March 2013 in Medan. Eligible population were four to twelve year old CP children who received PT. Subjects were divided into 2 group, group I was CP children with PT more than 10 months, group II was CP children with PT less than 10 months. Parents were asked to fill CP QOL questionnaires. To evaluate motor impairment level we used gross motor function classification system (GMFCS) that classified the motoric impairment into 5 levels. Data was analyzed by using independent T-test and MannWhitney U test with 95% confidence interval. Results There were 60 CP children divided into 2 groups of 30 children. The mean duration of PT in group I was 35.7 (SD 19.37) months and group II was 4.2 (SD 3.13) months. Gross motoric level in both group increased from GMFCS IV to GMFCS II in group I (P=0.0001) and from GMFCS IV to GMFCS III (P=0.002) in group II. The mean total CP QoL scores in group I and II were 79.63 (SD 5.73) and 47.71 (SD 6.85), respectively (P=0.0001). Conclusions Cerebral palsy children who received more than 10 months PT have higher QoL than children with less than 10 months PT. There was significant gross motor improvement after PT in both groups.
