The growth of air transportation gives negative impact in its ground access system in which the flow of people who accessing the airport creates road congestion. This problem is also supported with the highly dependence of people on private car use and leave public transport as unattractive mode to be used in accessing the airport. This research attempts to find out which travel attributes of transportation mode that influence the mode choice of people who accessing the airport as the ground access users. Taking one case study at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia, the data are collected from this airport through survey process. Further, the statistical methods are conducted to get the results. Six determined travel attributes; cost, travel time, walking distance, ease of transfer, ease of carrying luggage and comfort, significantly influence and give differences on the user’s mode choice in which four of them; walking distance, ease of transfer, ease of carrying luggage and comfort, are being perceived very satisfactory for car. The research concludes with potential steps in improving public transportation which give access to the airport that might help attract more people to use it and increase its mode share. Pertumbuhan transportasi udara membawa dampak negatif bagi jalur akses darat menuju bandara dimana kepadatan dan kemacetan jalan semakin meningkat seiring bertambahnya jumlah orang yang mengakses bandara. Permasalahan ini turut didukung oleh tingginya ketergantungan masyarakat dalam menggunakan kendaraan pribadi sementara transportasi publik hanya menjadi alternatif yang dinilai tidak menarik untuk digunakan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mencari dan menilai atribut perjalanan dari moda transportasi yang digunakan untuk mengakses bandara yang memengaruhi pilihan moda pengguna akses darat bandara. Dengan mengambil satu studi kasus di bandara internasional Soekarno-Hatta di Jakarta, Indonesia, survey dilakukan sebagai proses pengumpulan data. Enam atribut perjalanan, yaitu biaya, waktu tempuh, jarak berjalan, kemudahan transfer, kemudahan membawa barang bawaan, dan kenyamanan, secara signifikan memengaruhi dan memberikan perbedaan terhadap pemilihan moda dimana empat atribut diantaranya, yaitu jarak berjalan, kemudahan transfer, kemudahan membawa barang bawaan, dan kenyamanan, dinilai sangat memuaskan untuk moda mobil pribadi. Kesimpulan dari penelitian ini mendorong langkah-langkah potensial dalam meningkatkan daya saing transportasi publik yang digunakan untuk mengakses bandara sehingga dapat menarik lebih banyak pengguna dan meningkatkan pangsa pasarnya.

The electric bicycle is considered as an environmentally friendly mode, the market share of which is growing fast worldwide. Even in metropolitan areas which have a well-developed public transportation system, the usage of electric bicycles continues to grow. Compared with bicycles, the power transferred from the battery enables users to ride faster and have long-distance trips. However, research on electric bicycle travel behavior is inadequate. This paper proposes a cumulative prospect theory (CPT) framework to describe electric bicycle users’ mode choice behavior. Different from the long-standing use of utility theory, CPT considers travelers’ inconsistent risk attitudes. Six socioeconomic characteristics are chosen to discriminate conservative and adventurous electric bicycle users. Then, a CPT model is established which includes two parts: travel time and travel cost. We calculate the comprehensive cumulative prospect value (CPV) for four transportation modes (electric bicycle, bus, subway and private car) to predict electric bicycle users’ mode choice preference under different travel distance ranges. The model is further validated via survey data.

This chapter presents a study on the transportation mode choice behaviour of individuals with different socio-economic status. A previously developed system dynamics model has been adopted by differentiating the population mass into upper, middle, and lower classes. The simulation experiments with the model revealed that generally the upper class individuals would be more inclined to use a private car (PC) instead of public transportation (PT) when their tendency is compared to middle and lower class individuals. It was also observed that lower class individuals would be more willing to use PT instead of PC when their tendency is compared to middle and upper class individuals. As such, it would be difficult to encourage the upper class individuals to use PT instead of PC, and it would be successively easier to do so in the case of middle and lower class individuals. However, the results also indicated that under certain different circumstances, the upper class individuals would also prefer to go for PT, and the lower class ones could prefer to own and use PC instead of PT.

Jakarta is one of the most congested cities in the world due to a plethora of motor vehicles used in the city. One of the government actions to address the issue is by implementing Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) as an alternative public transportation mode. However, according to the convenience walking distance standard, the BRT coverage the inhabitant to choose motor vehicle rather than walking. This paper purposes Bike-Sharing as the smart transportation mode to overcome such issue and predict the three potential places to establish sharing-bike stations according to the convenience walking distance standard. In this paper the walking distance is classified into 100 mater range (300 meter, 400 meter and 500 meter) projected using the euclidean distance principle. As the result for 300 meter standard, there are 809 potential bike-sharing stations consist of 164 main stations and 645 feeder stations, while the 400 meter standard needs 541 potential stations with 140 stations serve the BRT station directly and 401 stations as the feeder. Furthemore, with 500 meter standard, 359 stations consist of 131 main stations and 228 feeder stations is needed.

The recent increase in privately owned vehicles has caused numerous problems: traffic congestions, unnecessary fuel lost and global warming are only few of these problems. This study will try to understand people’s behavior and modal choice and try to sway them to means of public transportation. A survey of mode choice between cars users in a neighborhood in Kuala Lumpur was conducted. A total of 25 surveys were collected over the course of a month. Among data collected were demographic details such as age, gender, educational level and travel behavior. The data was processed by SPSS software to determine which factors encourages and discourages using private, public transportation or walking. The study highlighted four models travel time reduction, travel cost reduction, and increase the parking charges and improves the walking facility. The sensitivity analysis results show that the main attraction that might switch private car users is travel time and improving the walking facility. The consequences of these would be less traffic on the roads contributing to less pollution and greater safety.

Development of new mode of metro kapsul as mass transportation mode in Bandung with corridor plan from Station Hall to Tegallega and return to Station Hall with plan of 19 stop station which can give contribution to congestion problem and lack of public transportation service in Bandung city. This study aims to analyze the potential of demand with the data of origin - destination of the respondent in the corridor plan of the metro capsule in order to give a description of the movement in the origin-destination matrix, in analysis for potential demand used the modal movement assumption of private vehicles, public transport and pedestrian, The location of priority shelter at the beginning of development by using multicriteria analysis while for operational analysis is calculated some variables of capsule metro operating system (headways, frequencies, etc). The result of origin-destination matrix analysis is getting potential demand of metro capsule during weekdays on-peak of 3529 pass/hour, off-peak of 2116 pass/hour. The result of location priority stop location will get 6 (six) stop location recommended in “Stasiun Bandung, Pasar Baru, Pasar Anyar, Taman Tegallega, ITC Kebon Kelapa and Alun-Alun Bandung”. From the operational results of metro capsule, obtained frequence of 20 Unit/jam, headways 3 minutes, the number of vehicles required 8 vehicles, on weekdays and weekends when on-peak and off-peak.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the actual walking distance to public transport (PuT) stations and to report passenger perceptions on route choice. Design/methodology/approach A systematic case study has been conducted after administrating a tailor-made paper-based intercept survey in a German city (Munich). It can determine the interrelation between the accessibility of the transit service and evaluation on walking distance acceptance. Statistical analysis and geo-spatial approach were completed for obtaining major findings. Findings Statistical and geo-spatial analysis shows that respondents living in low-density areas walk longer than residents living in nearby inner city areas. In terms of PuT modes, residents walk longer for suburban train and subway/metro (U-Bahn) than for bus/tram services. Transit users accept a longer walking distance to reach a train station than other PuT modes and they choose the most direct and quickest route to reach PuT stations. Research limitations/implications Findings of this study would help to formulate future strategies and standards for the sustainable planning of public transportation systems in the context of Munich and many other cities around the globe with similar conditions. However, future research should be conducted using a large-scale survey for evaluating the comprehensive picture of walking patterns to PuT stations. Accessibility to PuT stations can also be modeled and evaluated by adopting open data and voluntary social media information. Unfortunately, this study only presents a partial evaluation of walking focused on accessibility at selected PuT stations in different settings of the urban fabric. Social implications This empirical study can be considered as an initial finding in the favor of the city transport authority to provide a design scale for improved accessibility of transit users; however, further investigation should be conducted using a large-scale survey for evaluating the comprehensive walking patterns. Originality/value A systematic case study has been conducted after administrating a tailor-made paper-based intercept survey in a German city (Munich). Findings of this study would help to formulate future strategies and standard for the sustainable planning of the public transportation system in the context of Munich and many other cities in the globe with similar conditions.

This case study examines the geographic variation in students’ low-carbon transportation (LCT) modes to a commuter university campus. Three major goals are accomplished from this research: (1) identifying commuting zones for the bicycling, walking, and transit mode choice for UNCG students; (2) understanding whether the real vs. perception of space can be predictive to mode choice; and (3) understanding the relative importance of demographic, psychological, and logistic factors on students’ mode choice, using a suite of variables developed in multiple fields. Our analyses support the assertion that various physical, demographic, and psychological dimensions influence LCT mode choice. While the presence of sidewalks is conducive to walking, the distance, either perceived or actual, within 1.61 km from UNCG is the most important factor for walking mode share. The bicycling commute is not associated with either the distance or presence of bicycle lanes, while transit ridership most likely increases if students live >8 km from the UNCG campus with the nearest bus stop within 1 km from home. Given the limited bicycle lanes in Greensboro, students who commute to campus by bicycle are resilient to unfavorable bicycle conditions by sharing the road with cars and adjusting their travel routes. Our findings also concur with previous studies showing that bicycle commuters are disproportionately represented by self-identified whites while bus riders are disproportionately comprised of self-identified non-whites. Our analyses support Greensboro’s current planning and policy emphasis on low-carbon travel behaviors via equitable and safe transit-oriented multi-modal infrastructures, and suggest that UNCG should utilize its influence to advocate and further facilitate these ongoing efforts.

Travel physical energy expenditure for travellers has impact on travel mode choice behaviour. However, quantitative study on travel physical energy expenditure is rare. In this paper, the concept of travel physical energy expenditure coefficient has been presented. A case study has been carried out of young travellers in Beijing to get the value of physical energy expenditure per unit time under three transport modes, walking, car and public transportation. A series of experiments have been designed and conducted, which consider influence factors including age, gender, travel mode, riding posture, luggage level and crowded level. By analysing the travel data of money, travel time and physical energy expenditure, we determined that the value of travel physical energy expenditure coefficient δ is 0.058 RMB/KJ, which means that travellers can pay 0.058 RMB to reduce 1 KJ physical energy expenditure. Next, a travel mode choice model has been proposed using a multinomial logit model (MNL), considering economic cost, time cost and physical energy cost. Finally, the case study based on OD from Xizhimen to Tiantongyuan in Beijing was conducted. It is verified that it will be in better agreement with the actual travel behaviour when we take the physical energy expenditure for different types of travellers into account.
