For as long as there have been cities, there have been suburbs. Shared mobility—the shared use of a vehicle, bicycle, or other travel mode—is an innovative transportation strategy that enables users to have short-term access to a transportation mode on an as-needed basis. Shared mobility can enhance access and reduce social exclusion in lower-density environments and provide transportation options to carless and public transit-dependent households, particularly in areas without high-quality, fixed-route public transportation service. This chapter discusses the design and evolution of suburbs and how this impacts the transportation network. Additionally, this chapter reviews suburban applications of shared mobility services and provides a case study of shared mobility service deployments in Northern Virginia. The chapter concludes with key takeaways and a discussion of the potential future of shared mobility services in lower-density built environments.

Abstract   The demand for rural public transportation is dominated by people who cannot access private vehicles. In terms of the number of operating routes and the performance of their services, currently rural public transport services tend to decline. The mobility of rural communities to reach social facilities can be hampered if there is no public transportation service, which in turn will reduce the quality of human resources in rural areas. This study focuses on the movement characteristics of rural public transport passengers in Kuningan Regency. Several rural transportation routes were taken as samples, namely route 030 Cilimus-Linggarjati, route 061 Cilimus-Mandirancan, and route 037 Lengkong-Rancakeusik. This study shows that the characteristics of the movement of rural public transport passengers are an integral part in an effort to maintain rural public transport services. These characteristics of passenger movement can be used to improve the performance of public transportation, become input for public transport operators, and become material for local governments to make policies   Keywords: rural public transportation; public transport routes; public transport services; public transport performance.     Abstrak   Permintaan angkutan umum perdesaan didominasi oleh masyarakat yang tidak dapat mengakses kendaraan pribadi. Due to the rapid increase in population and the change in age structure toward the elderly, the phenomenon of societal ageing is being witnessed in many countries. The elderly travel less than the adult population due to decreasing mobility with an increasing age. In this study, we aimed to analyze the expectations and satisfaction of public transport users in Thailand using traditional importance performance analysis (IPA), gap analysis, and IPA integrated with competitor performance. We aimed to explain the differences in the analysis results produced by the three methods. The data were obtained from surveying 2250 elderly and 450 non-elderly adults. This study presents guidelines for improving the public transport service quality in Thailand to meet user needs. The results of this research showed that each approach provides its own distinctive aspects and theoretical differences, which lead to different interpretations. The results from the three approaches showed that equipment that increases safety for public transportation service users is an important factor for all elderly passengers that must be improved. Public transportation services in different regions should be developed to provide more reliable and regular services.

The approach used in this study uses a qualitative approach. This type of research is a case study method. The results showed that Ibn Khaldun's thought in the Circle of Equity theory of a person's level of welfare could be measured through Sharia values, so that when the providers of doctoral services in the Sunan Ampel religious tourism area performed obligatory prayers at the mosque and performed alms. Ashabiyah badawah-based economies are also applied in this community, because people tend to have a goal to save for the future in the hope of providing something more for their offspring later. The value of their wealth has not been able to share their wealth with fellow believers because it is only enough for themselves and is still classified as a prosperous family in stage III. in fact the circle of equity theory experienced a setback which increasingly troubled and kept the community from the word prosperous because the government did not want to be involved in the process of welfare for its people. Keywords: Islamic Welfare, Ibnu KHaldun, Circle of Equity, Ashabiyah

Density and population of bogor that keeps increasing will add the duty of government to provide more public means of mass. Transportation is a vital public facility. Public transport available in Bogor is a city transportation (public transportation) and buses. The existence of a number of public transportation totaling 3,412 units and 30 units of bus has been able to serve the needs of the community in transportation, but in terms of efficiency and comfort are still far from expected. Based on the results of Stated Preference regression models, we concluded that the most efficient mass transportation is city buses, and the most variable priority attribute passengers on a city bus is the bus occupancy, the bus waiting time efficiency, got a seat, bus convenience and cost/ bus rates. So the recommendation that we can give, the problem due to public transport in bogor can be solved by the means of mass transportation such as city buses. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the actual walking distance to public transport (PuT) stations and to report passenger perceptions on route choice. Design/methodology/approach A systematic case study has been conducted after administrating a tailor-made paper-based intercept survey in a German city (Munich). It can determine the interrelation between the accessibility of the transit service and evaluation on walking distance acceptance. Statistical analysis and geo-spatial approach were completed for obtaining major findings. Findings Statistical and geo-spatial analysis shows that respondents living in low-density areas walk longer than residents living in nearby inner city areas. In terms of PuT modes, residents walk longer for suburban train and subway/metro (U-Bahn) than for bus/tram services. Transit users accept a longer walking distance to reach a train station than other PuT modes and they choose the most direct and quickest route to reach PuT stations. Research limitations/implications Findings of this study would help to formulate future strategies and standards for the sustainable planning of public transportation systems in the context of Munich and many other cities around the globe with similar conditions. However, future research should be conducted using a large-scale survey for evaluating the comprehensive picture of walking patterns to PuT stations. Accessibility to PuT stations can also be modeled and evaluated by adopting open data and voluntary social media information. Unfortunately, this study only presents a partial evaluation of walking focused on accessibility at selected PuT stations in different settings of the urban fabric. Social implications This empirical study can be considered as an initial finding in the favor of the city transport authority to provide a design scale for improved accessibility of transit users; however, further investigation should be conducted using a large-scale survey for evaluating the comprehensive walking patterns. Originality/value A systematic case study has been conducted after administrating a tailor-made paper-based intercept survey in a German city (Munich). Findings of this study would help to formulate future strategies and standard for the sustainable planning of the public transportation system in the context of Munich and many other cities in the globe with similar conditions.

The growth of air transportation gives negative impact in its ground access system in which the flow of people who accessing the airport creates road congestion. This problem is also supported with the highly dependence of people on private car use and leave public transport as unattractive mode to be used in accessing the airport. This research attempts to find out which travel attributes of transportation mode that influence the mode choice of people who accessing the airport as the ground access users. Taking one case study at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia, the data are collected from this airport through survey process. Further, the statistical methods are conducted to get the results. Six determined travel attributes; cost, travel time, walking distance, ease of transfer, ease of carrying luggage and comfort, significantly influence and give differences on the user’s mode choice in which four of them; walking distance, ease of transfer, ease of carrying luggage and comfort, are being perceived very satisfactory for car. The research concludes with potential steps in improving public transportation which give access to the airport that might help attract more people to use it and increase its mode share.
