This study explicates the dynamic relationship between financial distress and earnings management using property and real estate companies listed in the Indonesia Stock Exchange from 2018 to 2020 as the unit analysis. The paper also aims to test whether financial distress can be positioned as a determinant, mediator, and moderator towards earnings management simultaneously. Structural Equation Modelling with Partially Least Square technique was used to analyzed data gathered from 90 financial reports of property companies. This research sheds a light on the use of silver-bullet analytical tools in form of the Partially Least Square method to produce robust results stronger than ordinary least squares. Researches on this issue were still scant. This study found that financial distress has a significant positive influence on earnings management practice and can mediate the negative relationship between earnings management practice and its determinants. The financial distress can also play a partial role as a moderator on the negative relationship between earnings management and its determinant. This research implicates that investors should pay more attention to the financial distressed property companies during the pandemic period because this research has proved the manager’s misbehaviour in increasing the earnings management practice of the financial distressed firms. Future research can adapt the proposed research model and test it with panel data regression procedures.

The study used 55 samples of telecommunication and non-construction companies listed in Indonesia Stock Exchange period 2013-2017. The technique sampling in this study is the purposive sampling method. The data analysis method is PLS (Partial Least Square). The results of this study indicate that liquidity, leverage, sales growth, and good corporate governance do not affect financial distress. These unexpected results may due to the limitation of this study. Therefore, for future research in financial distress, it is suggested to take into account the sample size and other variables that expected to affect financial distress.

Due to unstable economic and political conditions, many companies in the Middle East are undergoing various financial distress and decline in profitability. This paper examines the role of earnings management to avoid financial distress and improve profitability in 58 industrial corporations listed on Amman Stock Exchange for a period of 2011 to 2016, which constitutes 89% of the whole population. The total number of observations is 413 for the entire study period. The study uses a cross-sectional Jones model that was modified by (Kothari, Leone, and Wasley, 2005); to measuring discretionary accruals that used as a proxy for earnings management. The empirical results indicate that earning management is not affected by the Altman’s Z-score index, but it has a positive relationship with debt to equity ratio. This study also shows a positive relationship between earnings per share, returns on equity, and earnings management. Regarding the control variable, we found a negative relationship between cash flow from operation and discretionary accruals.

This research is an effort to make known the insight dynamics for determination of Dividend Payout regarding Non-Financial Firms listed in the KSE100 Index. In light of prior literature, key explanatory variables were identified to reveal their relationship and effect on determination of dividend payout. These variables are Changes in stock prices, Previous year dividend, Change in current year earnings and Change in sales. Through observation, 42 such companies were identified from the listed non-financial firms in the Karachi Stock Exchange that have been paying out dividend consistently for the past period from 2006 to 2014. Ordinary Least Square (OLS) was identified as the most appropriate tool for econometric analysis of the data. The descriptive statistics revealed the data to be normal. OLS result shows insignificant negative relationship of changes in sales and changes in stock prices with dividend payout ratio. Change in current year earning has significant negative relationship with dividend payout ratio while previous year dividend has significant relationship with dividend payout ratio. Since Dividend is an unsolved puzzle, thus there is implication for future research. Many other variables that have significance in context of Pakistan and past literature can be added to this regression to increase the explanatory power of the model.

This study aims to explore the impact of family ownership on the relationship among corporate social responsibility (CSR) and earning management (EM) in Pakistan. Data is collected from nonfinancial listed firms on Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSE) for the period 2009-2017. Our results of pooled ordinary least square regression indicate that CSR has significant negative impact on EM. Furthermore, results also indicate that association between CSR and EM is moderated by family ownership. Family firms which perform CSR activities are less involved in EM as compare to nonfamily firms perform CSR activities. This variation in behavior of EM in family and non-family firms can possibly be explained by socioemotional wealth theory. This article aims to synthesize and test empirically turnaround model by content dimension that is an integration of the organization change framework into turnaround research to measure some activities done to avoid failure in turnaround. This study on the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) by using Ordinary Least Square technique. The results of the analysis from content dimension show that the CEO expertise variable has a significant relationship to turnaround, since companies in Indonesia are dominated by family companies, so maintaining the incumbent CEO is more appropriate, because it is a family member. In addition, free assets show a significant relationship with turnaround, while leverage and growth of sales do not have a significant relationship with turnaround. Research on engagement has gained considerable attention in recent years as it is a strong predictor of a range of positive individual and organizational outcomes. There is a question of why the level of the engagement is different from employee to employee in an organization, though they are provided with the same resources. This study aims to investigate the influence of fit perception on engagement and the role of the employee’s psychological condition (work meaningfulness) on this relationship. This study mainly employed a survey research strategy, and data were primarily garnered from a questionnaire. This study was conducted among 145 respondents from the public sector organizations in Sri Lanka. Partial least-square structural equation modelling was employed to analyse the generated data. In this study, the researcher has conceptualized fit perception as a higher order construct comprising Person Job fit and Person Organization fit. The study revealed that fit perception positively influences employee engagement, and this relationship is mediated by work meaningfulness. This study contributes to the literature by deepening the understanding of the fit perception and engagement relationship by introducing work meaningfulness as a mediator variable. By highlighting how engagement is influenced by fit perception and work meaningfulness, this study facilitates practitioners to build and maintain an engaged workforce. Further contributions of this study, the avenue for future research, and study limitations are presented in detail at the end of this article.

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the implication of top executives’ number of years of experience (tenure) on corporate risk-taking behaviour and corporate performance in Malaysian corporations.Design/methodology/approachTo test the hypothesis efficiently, the authors have extracted the data from Bloomberg for 788 listed companies of the Malaysian Stock Exchange. The methodology entails ordinary least squares regressions, quantile regression and dynamic system generalized method of moments model.FindingsFirst, the authors show that executive management tenure has a significant negative relationship with corporate risk-taking. It means that the long-tenured executives tend to undertake less risky strategies and decisions. Second, this study reveals that the longer executive management tenure has a positive relationship with corporate performance. Third, the moderating effect of corporate risk-taking with executive tenure (Tenure dummy*Risk) has a negative relationship with the corporate performance by 1%.Practical implicationsIt implies that the appointment of experienced executive management contributes towards corporate performance directly. However, experienced management trends take less risk, which eventually results in mitigating the corporate performance. On that basis, the findings are significant in highlighting the usefulness of executive leadership term and offers insights to academics, practitioners and policymakers.Originality/valueThis paper is novel since it is unique in evaluating the executive tenure and the preferences to handle risk strategies and how that impact the firm performance.

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the influence of organisational politics on work engagement and the moderator effect of positive framing on this relationshipDesign/methodology/approachData were collected from 241 public sector employees in Sri Lanka through a structured questionnaire and analysed with partial least square structural equation modelling (PLS_SEM).FindingsThe results indicated that organisational politics negatively influenced employees' work engagement, positive framing positively influenced engagement and weakened the negative relationship between politics and engagement.Practical implicationsThis study suggests that organisation and individuals must take the necessary steps to enhance work engagement. Organisations must be transparent in all activities to avoid employees' negative perception. Also, organisations need to take steps to recruit employees with positive framing or develop this competency through training and development. Individuals also need to take necessary steps to frame the work environment positively to enhance their engagement in work.Originality/valueThis study extends the literature by being the first to examine the positive framing as a moderator in the relationship between politics and engagement. This study found that positive framing as a resource reduced the harmful effect of organisational politics on engagement and suggested positive framing can be considered as a resource in the future investigation of the job demand–resource model.
