The splendor falls on castle walls And snowy summits old in story: The long light shakes across the lakes, And the wild cataract leaps in glory. Blow, bugle, blow, set the wild echoes flying, Blow, bugle; answer, echoes, dying, dying, dying. —from The Splendor Falls by Alfred, Lord Tennyson This is the story of the closure of a hospital and with it a part of American pediatric history. Children's Seashore House of Atlantic City is the nation's fourth oldest pediatric hospital. After 118 years, it will close in the summer of 1990 and move to a new facility in Philadelphia. The simple brick, layer-cake structure looks very tired now, its iconic soul having been steadily removed for incorporation into the new hospital. The cornerstone animals, lions and bighorn, have been chiseled free and now guard a new outpost. So too have the plaques from the turn of the century, optimistically commemorating the establishment of endowed beds, wards, and cottages "for perpetual use" with their benefactors of simplicity and gentleness by name, such as the "Endowed Bed of St James Sunday School, 1889" and "Endowed by the Everyday Kindness Society, 1912." On this day, the workers hammer to remove the final link—an enormous marble tablet from 1919 eulogizing Dr William Bennett, the principal driving force of Children's Seashore House and also the founder of St Christopher's Hospital in Philadelphia. A mere 50 yards away, the Atlantic Ocean beats inexorably as it did at the founding in 1872, 2 years after the first planks were laid for the famous boardwalk.

The article reveals the content and outlines approaches to the definition of the legal nature of mining. Attention is drawn to the necessity of legal regulation of this activity, which is predetermined by the Federal Program «Digital Economy of the Russian Federation» — a project that provides for normative regulation of the digital environment. In order to support the mission to eliminate digital illiteracy, which is also envisaged in the National Program, the author elucidates the etymology and meaning of the term «mining» and considers various doctrinal interpretations of this concept. The paper presents such analogies of the blochchain technology as the public ledger, DNA, and a layer-cake for a better understanding of the blockchain technology that is associated with mining. Material-technical and organizational foundations of mining are revealed. The author demonstrates advantages and disadvantages of solo mining, pool mining, and cloud mining. The results of comparative monitoring of the attitude to the recognition of cryptocurrency as a means of payment are presented. Attention is drawn to the liberal legal regulation of blockchain technology and mining under the laws of the Republic of Belarus. The paper determines the stages of a law-making process aimed at legal support of mining in Russia. Based on the results of comparison of concepts of entrepreneurial activity and mining, it is concluded that mining represents one of new types of entrepreneurship brought to life due to the needs of digital economy. The author suggests thatmining participants be recognized as self-employed persons. It is noted that the entrepreneurial nature of mining arises questions concerning measures of its state regulation which is difficult within the framework of the existing paradigm, but should be built on the basis of a balance between private and public interests.

Huget, Jennifer LaRue. The Best Birthday Party Ever. Illus. LeUyen Pham. New York: Schwartz & Wade Books, 2011. Print. “My birthday is 5 months, 3 weeks, 2 days, and 8 hours away. Today I started to plan my party.” And so the planning begins for the 5-year-old soon-to-be birthday girl in this charming picture book. She has to start planning early if she wants the best birthday party ever. She is going to invite all 57 of her friends including the mailman and the invitations will be sprinkled with fairy dust. She will have 9 thousand balloons, streamers and napkins: all in pink. On the menu is a 17-layer cake, each layer a different flavour, with 6 zillion candles on top. Not only will there be: a magician, camel rides and a Ferris wheel, but each lucky guest will receive a hamster as a party favour. In a kid-friendly countdown style towards the big day, our sweet party planner gets more and more excited as her birthday approaches and the plans get more and more grandiose. Only after her mother comments that this birthday party is “getting out of hand” does she agree to skip the sparkly necklaces. The day finally arrives and while it may not be the party she dreamed of, she is appreciative and enjoys her day so much that she immediately begins plans for her next birthday. This beautifully illustrated read-aloud captures the excitement of a child as she looks forward to her special day and will appeal to lower elementary grades as well as preschoolers. The whimsical mostly-pink drawings may be initially off-putting to boys but they are certain to relate and enjoy the story. Highly recommended: 4 out of 4 stars Reviewer: Debbie FeisstDebbie is a Public Services Librarian at the H.T. Coutts Education Library at the University of Alberta. When not renovating, she enjoys travel, fitness and young adult fiction.

The authors suspect that the young perspective has been left out when online risk and safety are discussed in contemporary research. The aim of this chapter is to give a critical approach to this matter and question fear as a driving force for protecting young people online. Interviews with children about their views of internet use (Dunkels, 2007) and a study of safe use guides from European countries conducted in 2008 (Lüders et al, 2009) form the empirical base. The discussion in the chapter is underpinned by ideas of childhood as a social construction, emerging ideas of power relations pertaining to age and theories of technology reception. The authors also introduce a metaphor, the layer cake, to better understand how the same action can be viewed from different vantage points.
