Sexism, Stereotypes and Production Constraints in the Tanzania Video Film Industry

In the current neo-liberal era, it is pertinent to interrogate the role of the video film industry in transforming societies beyond patriarchal and bourgeois gender stereotypes. The video film industry is popular in Tanzania, and bongo movies appear to focus on socio-cultural and economic issues, which largely pander to stereotypes as defined by patriarchy. In this article, I investigate the claim that “there are no female producers in bongo movies”. The statement invites analysis on gender roles in the film production industry in Tanzania as well as the content of the produced films. Meetings, participant observations and interviews were used to collect data and transformative feminism was employed as a tool for analysis. The analysis forms part of the process to document women’s struggles in various fields of occupation, linking products to means of production. The findings show that there are few female ‘producers’ in bongo movies. Depicted as ‘just actors’, they are substantially influential and have exhibited extensive survival mechanisms in the constrained film production environments in which they operate.

From the early 1960s, the British film industry was increasingly reliant on American studio financed ‘runaway’ productions. Alexander Walker identifies United Artists and Universal Pictures as two of the major players in the trend he dubbed ‘Hollywood England’. This article offers a close examination of the role of two studios in the financing of British film production by making extensive use of the Film Finances Archive. It focuses on two case studies: Tom Jones (1963) and Isadora (1968), both of which had completion guarantees from Film Finances, and will argue that Tony Richardson and Karel Reisz, two of the key British New Wave directors, lost their previous ability to direct films to budget and within schedule when they had the financial resources of American studios behind them. It will analyse how, due to a combination of ‘artistic’ intent and Hollywood money, Richardson and Reisz separately created two of the most notorious ‘runaways’ that ran away during the 1960s.

During the current digital (r)evolution, consumer and producer roles have started to converge, with consumers becoming value creators and, to a certain extent, producers. This phenomenon is particularly enhanced on online platforms and social networks, especially in creative-cultural industries. The goal of this research is to discuss the role of the prosumer in the film industry in the context of crowdfunded projects, with a focus on the Romanian experience. Through an empirical analysis of successful filmmaking crowdfunding projects, the backers' role in the film production process is investigated. The eight cases analysed within this research represent the quasi-totality of the successfully crowdfunded filmmaking projects via Romanian crowdfunding platforms. The research reveals that the active involvement of backers-consumers into the film production process represents one of the most valuable rewards offered in exchange for the highest financial contributions, with the majority of successful filmmaking projects including it in their reward strategy. According to the research findings, filmmakers understand that, on the one hand, fans can financially contribute more by being provided with such an opportunity, and that, on the other hand, prosumers can use their skills and expertise and translate them into creative input, execution, assessment, and testing of the project. The author posits that the opportunity to become producer in a film is an incentive to financially (and additionally non-financially) contribute to the project, thus increasing the odds of the project to be successful. Such conclusion can improve the reward scheme in crowdfunded filmmaking projects as well as their rate of success.

The business of conventional feature filmmaking is like no other, in that it assembles a huge company of people from a range of disciplines on a temporary basis, all to engage in the collaborative endeavour of producing a unique, one-off piece of work. The PI3K/AKT pathway is one of the most frequently over-activated intracellular pathways in several human cancers. This pathway, acting on different downstream target proteins, contributes to the carcinogenesis, proliferation, invasion, and metastasis of tumour cells. A multi-level impairment, involving mutation and genetic alteration, aberrant regulation of miRNAs sequences, and abnormal phosphorylation of cascade factors, has been found in multiple cancer types. The deregulation of this pathway counteracts common therapeutic strategies and contributes to multidrug resistance. In this review, we underline the involvement of this pathway in patho-physiological cell survival mechanisms, emphasizing its key role in the development of drug resistance. We also provide an overview of the potential inhibition strategies currently available.

India has long been known for its prestigious Mumbai-based film industry, namely Bollywood, and remains by far the largest producer of films in the world. With the growing global reach of Indian cinema, this study looks at an intriguing Indian-film fever over the last decade in the newly discovered market of China. Through examining key factors that make Indian films appealing to Chinese and exploring the opportunities and challenges of Indian cinema in China, this article draws upon insights gained from the narratives of local audiences. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews with 32 Indian-film audiences residing across 14 different cities in mainland China. Thematic analysis identified the following five appealing factors, which explain why the Chinese enjoy Indian films: content-driven story, social values, star power, audience reviews and cultural connections. While a comprehensive list of opportunities was derived showing the potential future of Bollywood in China, results found that China’s unique institutional context and an ongoing India–China geopolitical tensions also present challenges, which in turn add to the overall complexity of films’ success in the Chinese market. This article argues the powerful role of Bollywood in bridging cultures and improving India–China ties, as Indian films have made Chinese people more aware of India in a favourable way.

This book uses the potent case study of contemporary Taiwanese queer romance films to address the question of how capitalism in Taiwan has privileged the film industry at the expense of the audience's freedom to choose and respond to culture on its own terms. Interweaving in-depth interviews with filmmakers, producers, marketers, and spectators, Ya-Fong Mon takes a biopolitical approach to the question, showing how the industry uses investments in techno-science, ancillary marketing, and media convergence to seduce and control the sensory experience of the audience-yet that control only extends so far: volatility remains a key component of the film-going experience.

AbstractDo political gender stereotypes exist in egalitarian settings in which all parties nominate women? Do they matter for candidate selection in systems of proportional representation with multiparty competition and preferential voting? To date, these questions remain unanswered because related research is limited to the U.S. case. Our pioneering study examines political stereotypes in one of the “least likely” cases, Finland—a global forerunner in gender equality. We find, first, that stereotypes persist even in egalitarian paradises. Second, when testing across settings of candidate choice, we find that the effect varies greatly: political gender stereotypes are powerful in hypothetical choices, but they work neither in favor of nor against female candidates when many “real,” viable, experienced, and incumbent female candidates are competing. Although in open-list systems with preferential voting, gender stereotypes can directly affect female candidates’ electoral success, in Finland, their actual impact in real legislative elections appears marginal.

Abstract Contract farming is based on agreements settled prior to the farmer deciding about agricultural production, and influence their judgment regarding inputs and production systems. Therefore, they provide means of production coordination and safety for both farmer and agro-industry/distributor. However, contract farming has its gaps since it is written in abscence of complete information, due to the behavioral assumption of bounded rationality of economic agents. A specific law might generate legal certainty for economic agents, insofar as the Judiciary fulfills the contractual gaps. From the other side, private agents may also fulfill the contractual gaps. As an effort to understand the role of institutions in contract farming, this study aims to analyze the Bill 6,459/2013, which intends to rule contract farming and takes private instituctions into account, through the agency of the Monitoring, Development and Reconciliation of Integration Committee (Cadec). This is an applied research with qualitative approach. The research concludes that the approval of bill might lead to effective typical law for contract farming, provided that the creation of Cadec is encouraged.
