Evaluation of Nursing Students’ Perspectives toward Objective Structured Clinical Examination

Nurses need to master the core nursing competencies to perform their professional duties effectively. The Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) have been integrated as an innovative method of evaluating clinical skills in the nursing curriculum over the years. The study that directed this article aimed to assess nursing students’ perception toward OSCEs. A cross-sectional descriptive design was used. A convenient sample of 429 undergraduate nursing students was enrolled. In addition to demographic data, the OSCEs’ evaluation questionnaire was used to gather data. The questionnaire assessed nursing students’ evaluation of the OSCEs’ attributes, the quality of OSCEs’ performance, and OSCEs’ scoring and objectivity. Seven questions about the evaluation of the OSCEs’ organisation were added. About two-thirds of the students were female (69.2%) and belonged to the age category of younger than 24 years (59.9%). The OSCEs were rated the most preferred assessment method for clinical competencies and fit for all student levels. Nursing students showed positive perspectives toward OSCEs’ attributes, quality of performance, scoring and objectivity, and organisation. OSCEs have been used as an innovative method of evaluating clinical nursing skills. OSCEs are accepted well by nursing students. The study recommends that academic institutions have to design OCSEs well in terms of preparation, planning, equipping labs, organisation, implementation, follow-up, and monitoring, and they should consider faculty and students’ feedback to make it more effective and valuable.

Objective: To explore undergraduate nursing students’ perception and attitude toward the OSCE. Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted between April-May 2020, among undergraduate nursing students in the College of Nursing at Sultan Qaboos University. Two self-administered questionnaires were employed to obtain data on students’ perception and attitude toward OSCE. Students’ feedback on OSCE was collected using open-ended questions about OSCE strengths, weakness, and recommendation for improvement. Surveys responses were based on a 5-point ordinal scale ranging from strongly disagree to strongly agree. Students’ Feedback on OSCE was analyzed as descriptive data by identifying the common themes and categorize them in groups. Results: A total of 160 students completed the study questionnaires. Most agreed that OSCE atmosphere is not good (66.3%) and it shouldn’t be the only mode of practical Examination (40.6%). Also, 64.4% of the students felt that timing allocated to complete the skills was not adequate. The data shows that 33.1% of the examinees felt that OSCE examination is more stressful than clinical examination. In addition, few students supported that OSCE has improved their communication skills and it increased their confidence level to perform nursing skills. Conclusion: The findings of this study appear alarming in regard to students’ perception about the overall process and the validity of OSCE examination as an assessment method. Nursing educators need to consider further evaluation and improvement of the OSCE in order to improve students’ acceptance and appreciation of OSCE as an important form of clinical learning and as an assessment method. Abstract Background Formative and summative evaluation are widely employed in simulated-based assessment. The aims of our study were to evaluate the acquisition of nursing competencies through clinical simulation in undergraduate nursing students and to compare their satisfaction with this methodology using these two evaluation strategies. Methods Two hundred eighteen undergraduate nursing students participated in a cross-sectional study, using a mixed-method. MAES© (self-learning methodology in simulated environments) sessions were developed to assess students by formative evaluation. Objective Structured Clinical Examination sessions were conducted to assess students by summative evaluation. Simulated scenarios recreated clinical cases of critical patients. Students´ performance in all simulated scenarios were assessed using checklists. A validated questionnaire was used to evaluate satisfaction with clinical simulation. Quantitative data were analysed using the IBM SPSS Statistics version 24.0 software, whereas qualitative data were analysed using the ATLAS-ti version 8.0 software. Results Most nursing students showed adequate clinical competence. Satisfaction with clinical simulation was higher when students were assessed using formative evaluation. The main students’ complaints with summative evaluation were related to reduced time for performing simulated scenarios and increased anxiety during their clinical performance. Conclusion The best solution to reduce students’ complaints with summative evaluation is to orient them to the simulated environment. It should be recommended to combine both evaluation strategies in simulated-based assessment, providing students feedback in summative evaluation, as well as evaluating their achievement of learning outcomes in formative evaluation.

Background: Moral distress is considered to be the negative feelings that arise when one knows the morally correct response to a situation but cannot act because of institutional or hierarchal constraints. Objectives: To analyze moral distress and its relation with sociodemographic and academic variables in undergraduate students from different universities in Brazil. Method: Quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. Data were collected through the Moral Distress Scale for Nursing Students, with 499 nursing students from three universities in the extreme south of Brazil answering the scale. The data were analyzed in the statistical software SPSS version 22.0, through descriptive statistical analysis, association tests (t-test and analysis of variance), and linear regression models. Ethical considerations: Approval for the study was obtained from the Research Ethics Committee at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande. Findings: The mean intensity of moral distress in the constructs ranged from 1.60 to 2.55. As to the occurrence of situations leading to moral distress in the constructs, the frequencies ranged from 1.21 to 2.43. The intensity level of moral distress showed higher averages in the more advanced grades of the undergraduate nursing course, when compared to the early grades of this course (between 5 and 10 grade, average = 2.60–3.14, p = 0.000). Conclusion: The demographic and academic characteristics of the undergraduate nursing students who referred higher levels of moral distress were being enrolled in the final course semesters, were at a federal university, and had no prior degree as an auxiliary nurse/nursing technician.

A baixa qualidade da alimentação e o sedentarismo representam riscos para o acúmulo de gordura corporal e desenvolvimento de doenças já na juventude. O objetivo do estudo foi investigar o consumo alimentar e o estado nutricional de alunos do curso de Enfermagem por meio de atividade prática em uma disciplina curricular relacionada à nutrição. Trata-se de um estudo transversal feito com as informações obtidas durante o desenvolvimento de uma atividade da disciplina denominada “Aspectos nutricionais na assistência de enfermagem”, na qual participaram 76 estudantes maiores de 18 anos. As informações nutricionais foram obtidas por meio de entrevista em pares, registro de um padrão alimentar e aplicação de um Questionário de Frequência Alimentar. Os integrantes do estudo eram na maioria mulheres (80,3%) e a idade média da amostra foi de 25,3 ± 7,3 anos. Muitos indivíduos apresentaram ingestão hídrica insuficiente, a qual se correlacionou negativamente com o consumo de refrigerante (r= -0,254 p=0,029). 48,8% da amostra estava acima do peso corporal e 75% eram sedentários. O fracionamento alimentar foi considerado satisfatório, mas o consumo de frutas e hortaliças foi abaixo das recomendações (0,6±0,9; 1,7±1,2 porções). Houve alto consumo de açúcar e gordura, identificado por itens, como o refrigerante e alimentos fritos. Acredita-se que a disciplina relacionada à nutrição, presente na grade curricular do curso, possa servir como uma importante ferramenta de estímulo a melhores hábitos de vida, partindo de práticas alimentares mais adequadas.Palavras-chave: Consumo alimentar. Estudantes. EVALUATION OF FOOD CONSUMPTION AND NUTRITIONAL STATUS OF UNDERGRADUATE NURSING STUDENTS ABSTRACT: The poor quality of diet and the sedentary lifestyle increase the risk of body fat accumulation and the development of diseases as early as the youth. The objective of the study was to investigate the food consumption and the nutritional status of students of the Nursing course through practical activity in a curricular discipline related to nutrition. This is a cross-sectional study carried out with the information obtained during the development of an activity of the discipline called "Nutritional Aspects in Nursing Care", in which 76 students older than 18 years participated. The nutritional information was obtained by a paired interview, recording a food pattern and applying a Food Frequency Questionnaire. The study participants were mostly female (80.3%) and the mean age of the sample was 25.3 ± 7.3 years. Many subjects presented insufficient water intake, which correlated negatively with the soda consumption (r = -0.254 p = 0.029). 48.8% of the sample was overweight and 75% were sedentary. The number of meals was considered satisfactory, but consumption of fruits and vegetables was below the recommendations (0.6 ± 0.9, 1.7 ± 1.2 portions). There was high consumption of sugar and fat, identified by items such as soda and fried foods. It is believed that the discipline related to nutrition, present in the curriculum of the course, can serve as an important tool to stimulate better life habits, starting from more appropriate eating practices.Keywords: Food consumption. INTRODUCTION: Nursing students suffer from high levels of stress related to academic assignments in addition to clinical skills training. As a psychosocial phenomenon, stress affects students’ academic achievement and wellbeing. Coping mechanisms help students deal with the challenges arising from stress.AIMS: To illustrate the level of stress and common stressors among nursing students; to describe the difference in stress level related to demographic data; and to identify coping mechanisms used by nursing students.METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the type of stress and coping strategies among nursing students. The level of stress was evaluated through Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and type of coping strategies were assessed by use of Coping Behaviours Inventory (CBI).RESULTS: Students perceived moderate level of stress, most commonly attributed to assignments and workload, teachers and nursing staff, peers and daily life, and taking care of patients. The most frequently used coping mechanism was problem solving. The study found that age, GPA, education level and residence are good predictors of the use of transference as a coping behaviour.CONCLUSION: A moderate level of stress among students illustrates the need for stress management programs and the provision of suitable support.
