Protected Areas (PAs) are created for the protection and maintenance of biological diversity, but many of Ghana’s PAs are subjectto severe pressures and threats, the main pressures being the illegal extraction of natural resources. Rattans are indisputablyone of the most important Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) in Ghana’s Protected Areas that is without doubt one of thereasons for which it has drawn the attention of researchers. In this study the illegal rattan extraction patterns in the AnkasaConservation Area (ACA) in Ghana was inspected. Simple random sampling and Snowball sampling techniques were used. Datacollection employed the use of semi-structured questionnaires, interviews and field enumeration of rattans as well as an analysisof Effective Patrol Man-days (EPMDS) from 2004 to 2012. The results showed a significant positive correlation (r = 0.75, p<0.05, r2 = 0.557) between patrol effort and rattan extraction encounters. In addition, there was a general reduction in illegalrattan extraction encounters from 2004 to 2012 at a rate of 4.3 per year. The highest illegal rattan extraction incidences wererecorded in 2006 (76 encounters), 2005 (35 encounters), 2008 (22 encounters), 2004 (18 encounters) and the least incidencewere recorded in both 2010 (3 encounters) and 2011 (3 encounters). The research also revealed that Eremospatha macrocarpawas the most extracted rattan species followed by Laccosperma secundiflorum. The major rattan extraction and trade routesoriginate in the northern parts and in the area east of the reserve and also south of Draw River Forest Reserve. Generally, rattanpoaching in Ankasa Conservation Area has declined, but there are still human incursions in the northern part of the reserve. Thestudy recommended an intensification of patrols in the north of the reserve. Also, enrichment planting and Agroforestry practicesof inter-cropping rattans with seasonal crops should be pursued vigorously for the local communities.

At the present stage, the development of the oil industry of the Russian Federation is impossible without replenishing the resource base, and therefore an urgent task is to analyze and assess the conditions and characteristics of oil-andgas content in unexplored regions.Purpose of the study is an analysis and an assessment of reservoir properties of rocks of the Aptian horizon Р1+2- К2 within the Akhlovskaya structure. We analyzed the graphs of the distribution of indicators in wells R-212 and R-213 in the Akhlovsky area and concluded that the reservoir is heterogeneous, and there are interlayers of mudstones with other reservoir properties and geophysical characteristics. The following pairs of parameters (porosity coefficient and oil-saturated thickness of rocks, rock resistivity and porosity coefficient, rock resistivity and oil-saturated thickness of rocks) have a significant positive correlation. Having studied the distribution of indicators in the Akhlovsky area for wells R-212 and R-213 along one horizon, we concluded that these indicators differ very slightly, which indicates the homogeneity of the reservoir properties. Qualitative indicators Qualitative indicators don't change. Thus, we can expect similar indicators within the entire area of the explored layer Р1+2- К2 in the territory of the Akhlovsky area.

Colabed methane system is a natural system that consists of coal seams, coalbed methane in them and surrounding rocks. As an unconventional natural gas, reservoir and conservation of coalbed methane are different from those of conventional hydrocarbon. The Qinshui Basin, covering an area about 30,000sq.km in southeastern Shanxi Province, has abundant coalbed methane resources in the carboniferous Taiyuan formation and permian Shanxi formation, with an in-situ methane resource 3.3×1012 m3.In this study, the structural deformation and tectonic evolution of coalbed methane system in Qinshui basin were reported. Relationships between structural deformation and the formation of coalbed methane reservoir in Qinshui Basin were also discussed. The results show that Yangquan-Shouyang area in the north part of the basin and Tunliu-Xiangyuan area in the east are favorable for formation coalbed methane system. In contrast, Jincheng-Qinshui area in the south part of basin and the Qinyuan area in the middle of basin are favorable for both the formation of coalbed methane reservoirs and high yields as well.

The Wuwei Basin is located in the Gansu Corridor, which has abundant coalbed methane resources of 2.75 × 1011 m3. However, a low degree of coalbed methane exploration exists, and only a few wells have been drilled in local regions due to insufficient understanding of coalbed methane enrichment and its main controlling factors. This study analyzed the controlling factors of coalbed methane enrichment, including coal reservoir characteristics, hydrogeological conditions, and the original sedimentary environment of the coal-bearing strata. The results showed that the main coal seams were developed in the Taiyuan Formation, and were mostly concentrated in the Yingpan Sag in the south and the Ermahu Sag in the north of the study area. The macrolithotype of the coals in this basin was mainly semi-bright coal with a medium to high rank. Coal macerals were mainly vitrinite, ranging between 65.1% and 91.6% (averaged 81.70%), followed by liptinite, ranging between 1.9% and 29.5% (averaged 8.82%), and inertinite, ranging between 0.2% and 16.5% (averaged 3.66%). Mineral contents varied from 2.5% to 15.1% (averaged 6.16%). The macrolithotype and microlithotype of the Taiyuan Formation coals were favorable for coalbed methane formation. Through comparative analysis of moisture content, ash yield, gas content, and coal-forming sedimentary environments, it was found that the coal formed in the lagoon environment had a higher gas content and lower ash yield than that of the coal formed in the tidal flat environment. The high contents of total dissolved solids in aquifers around coal seams (1.75–16.70 g/L) reflected the closed hydrodynamic environment and were favorable for the preservation of coalbed methane in the Yingpan Sag. Considering various controlling factors (i.e., structure, sedimentation and hydrogeology), three coalbed methane enrichment models were proposed. The model of coalbed methane enrichment in the synclinorium was the most favorable for the enrichment of coalbed methane in the Yingpan Sag.

Despite the recent increased interest of researchers in the pre-Jurassic deposits of Western Siberia, this complex of rocks still remains relatively unexplored. In this paper, we consider fields that are in close proximity to each other, but have. fundamentally different geological structure and criteria for the oil and gas content of rocks that form the top of the pre-Jurassic complex.

On the Kara Sea shelf, there are two sedimentary basins separated by the North-Siberian sill. Tectonically the southern part of the Kara Sea covers the South Kara regional depression, which is the northern end of the West Siberian geosyncline. This part of the water area is identified as part of the South Kara oil and gas region, within which the Aptian-Albian-Senomanian sedimentary complex is of greatest interest in terms of gas content, in terms of liquid hydrocarbons - Neocomian and Jurassic deposits. The northern part of the Kara Sea is an independent North Kara province, for the most part of which the prospects of petroleum potential are associated with Paleozoic sedimentary complexes. Oil and gas perspective objects of this basin may be associated with anticlinal, non-structural traps and reef structures.

Thus far in the study, 4 species of endemic fishes and 2 introduced trout species have been collected, measured for total length, and in some cases, weighed, and then released. Sampling has been accomplished by electroshocking on 6, 7, 8, and 9 July, 1987, at 4 sites on the East and North Forks of the Virgin River, as well as 1 site on the Santa Clara River, and 1 site on Moody Wash near Mogatsu Creek, a tributary of the Santa Clara River. Seining, measuring, and releasing was done on 3, 4, and 20 September, 4 and 10 October, and on 9 and 10 January, 1988, at five sites on the East and North Forks of the Virgin River. Electroshocking was used on 9 January, 1988 at one of the North Fork sites, utilizing a backpack electroshocker unit borrowed from Donna Withers, of the Nevada Department of Wildlife. On 24, 29, and 30 August, fish were surveyed by seining or dip netting at Lytle Ranch, on Beaver Dam Wash, a tributary of the Virgin River, for purposes of determining favorable habitat conditions under a different regime. Electroshocking was determined to be limited in use in the Virgin River system, due to the frequent turbidity of the water, and the depth of the pools. In winter we have not collected substantial numbers of any species, with either electroshocking or seining techniques. It is possible that the fish are located in places unaccessible to our sampling techniques, or possibly they have undertaken significant migration to other locations, most likely towards the warmer waters of lower elevations. Mass mortality can be ruled out due to the fact that all fish species have been observed to reappear in early spring. We need to revise our sampling techniques, and are working on a variety of different procedures to be able to collect fish in winter, or find out where they live. The limitations of the winter habitat may prove to be an important factor in the continued success of the spinedace in the Virgin River in Zion. The borrowed electroshocking equipment seems marginally successful in sampling fishes in the highly conductive water of the Virgin. A more powerful unit needs to be procured. When the water is clear, shocking works well because the fish can be visualized and netted while immobilized by the shocker, but the frequent turbidity of the water would make any fish not surfacing impossible to see and catch, even though it was immobilized.
