Anti-inflammatory refers to group of medication that is utilized for curing pain and inflammation. Many synthetic products are used as anti-inflammatory agents but the effects caused by them is not satisfactory. Cordis obliqua is an anti-inflammatory herb that is enormously involved in pain reduction. The present paper aims to develop a topical gel formulation comprising herbs i.e. Cordis obliqua and curcumin with potent anti-inflammatory activity. The gel formulation was then subjected to characterization studies which involve pH, viscosity, excrudability, spreadability and in vitro analysis. pH of gel formulation was found to be 7.2±1.01 which is almost equivalent to the skin pH. In viscosity test, it was observed that viscosity of gel formulation was found to be effective. Moreover, spreadability co-efficient of the formulation satisfactory which indicates that sanitizer gel easily adhers on the skin and covers the bacteria residing on the skin, if any.

Triphala is a traditional Thai herbal formulation containing dried fruits of Phyllanthus emblica, Terminalia bellirica, and Terminalia chebula. It has wound healing, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. The objective of this research was to formulate mucoadhesive films containing Triphala extract for aphthous ulcers treatment. The films were formulated using hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, HPMC, (5, 8, 10% w/w) as a film-forming polymer and glycerin (5% w/w) as a plasticizer. Triphala extract (2.5, 5, 10% w/w) was incorporated into the film during the film preparation. The films were then evaluated for the physical appearance, dissolution time, mechanical properties (strength and elasticity) and mucoadhesive capability to the porcine buccal mucosa. The antioxidant activity and anti-inflammatory activity of the films were also evaluated by DPPH assay and the proteins denaturation method, respectively. Physical properties revealed that Triphala-loaded HPMC films were transparent with brown color. All formulations showed 1-2 hr of dissolution times. Triphala films exhibited good mucoadhesive properties. Films prepared from the solution containing HPMC (10% w/w), glycerin (5% w/w), and Triphala extract (10% w/w) were the most appropriate formulation for further development due to suitable strength, elasticity, and mucoadhesive properties. Moreover, the films exhibited antioxidants and anti-inflammatory activity which may help relieve the symptom of aphthous ulcers.

CML-1 is a purified extract from a mixture of 13 Oriental herbs (Achyranthis Radix, Angelicae Gigantis Radix, Cinnamomi Cortex Spissus, Eucommiae Cortex, Glycyrrhizae Radix, Hoelen, Lycii Fructus, Paeoniae Radix, Rehmanniae Radix Preparata and Atractylodis Rhizoma, Zingiberis Rhizoma, Zizyphi Semen, Acori Graminei Rhizoma) that have been widely used for the treatment of inflammatory diseases in Asia. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-inflammatory and analgesic potential of CML-1. The animals used in this study were administered either vehicle or CML-1 (30, 100, 300 and 600 mg/kg) orally. The vascular permeability induced by acetic acid was significantly reduced by CML-1 in all doses. The swelling of the rat's hind paw induced by carrageenan was significantly inhibited by CML-1 in doses of 100, 300 and 600 mg/kg. In the case of rheumatoid arthritis induced by complete Freund's adjuvant in rats, the treatment with CML-1 at a dose level of 300 mg/kg inhibited edema. CML-1 at a dose level of 600 mg/kg inhibited acetic acid-induced writhing syndrome, however it did not have any anti-nociceptive action in the Randall-Selitto assay or the hot plate test. Our findings suggest that CML-1 has a potent anti-inflammatory activity.

Euphorbia hirta and Lactuca virosa are medicinal plants that have been used in the cure and treatment of various diseases and for health care. This study aims at evaluating the anti-inflammatory activities of the aqueous extracts of Euphorbia hirta and Lactuca virosa plants. Albumin and histamine induced inflammation in mice and xylene induced ear edema were used for the in-vivo anti-inflammatory studies. Erythrocyte membrane stabilization and inhibition of protein denaturation assays were used for the in-vitro anti-inflammatory studies. Combined doses of 100 mg/kg Euphorbia hirta and 50 mg/kg Lactuca virosa, 100 mg/kg Euphorbia hirta and 100 mg/kg Lactuca virosa, 100 mg/kg Lactuca virosa only and 10 mg/kg diclofenac significantly reduced inflamed paw in mice (P<0.05) compared to control in albumin and histamine induced inflammatory test. Combined doses of 50 mg/kg Euphorbia hirta and 100 mg/kg Lactuca virosa,100 mg/kg Euphorbia hirta, 100mg/kg Lactuca virosa significantly reduced xylene induced inflammation (P<0.001) compared to control. The extracts at 1 mg/ml, 2 mg/ml and 3 mg/ml significantly inhibited protein denaturation (P<0.001) and heat induced hemolysis of erythrocytes (P<0.0001). The plant extract of Euphorbia hirta and lactuca virosa possesses in-vivo and in-vivo anti-inflammatory effects. Keywords: Euphorbia hirta, Lactuca virosa, anti-inflammatory, protein denaturation
