Determining the variation of chemical properties of thermally treated Bambusa vulgaris is important to provide the information of the responses of the chemical constituents to the bamboo modification against biodegradation. This research was therefore conducted to determine the chemical properties of thermally modified Bambusa vulgaris. Two hundred and seventy (30 x 2 x 0.5 cm) bamboo strips dimension were thermally modified in a heat-chamber at 100, 110, 120, 130 and 140 °C each, for 10, 20 and 30 minutes, under constant pressure (220 N/m2) in factorial arrangement in completely randomised design with 5 replicates. Unmodified strips served as control. Chemical characteristics (cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin and ash contents) were determined using standard procedures. The mean variation range of the control to 140°C/30 minutes of the thermally modified samples is as follows; the cellulose value ranged from 46.46±0.11% to 42.19±0.18%, hemicellulose from 35.59±0.10% to 31.80±0.01%, lignin from 29.11±0.12% to 26.17±0.13%, ash from 0.92±0.02% to 0.63±0.01%; the study also revealed that there were decrease in each chemical constituent value varies from a lower to a higher temperature and time regime proportionally except in the lignin content. Increase in temperature and time of thermal modification reduced the chemical characteristics of Bambusa vulgaris which resulted to reduction in the level of sugar contents (cellulose) of bamboo which enables it to be less attractive to both fungi and termite attack hence extending the service life of bamboo in use.

The potential of carbon sequestration of tree species in the Chintapalle forest range, of Narsipatnam Division, was estimated by using a non-destructive method. The sequestration of 6033 trees belonging to 22 species was investigated; the approximate height of tree species and the diameter at breast height (DBH) were measured for the estimation of CO2 sequestration. The maximum weight of carbon was observed in Pongamia pinnata (L.) Pierre species i.e (37987.06 kg) and the minimum weight of carbon was noted in Phyllanthus emblica L. species i.e is (61.8kg). The total carbon sequestrated by the entire tree species was (2370614.0 kg), The average carbon sequestered was (39865.81 kg). The highest sequestration was noted in the species P. pinnata (L.) Pierre i.e. (139271.95 kg) and the lowest (226.79 kg) was noted in the species P. emblica L. The maximum average DBH with maximum carbon sequestration potential was observed in Ficus benghalensis L. species, with higher total green (AGW) observed in all sites, whereas minimum average DBH with minimum carbon sequestration potential was noted in Bambusa vulgaris species. The regression analysis tests the relationship between two variables. The height of trees has no significant impact on the amount of CO2 sequestered F (32085087175.84, 12946607900) = 2.478262; P ? 0.05, which indicates that the tree height plays an insignificant role in CO2 sequestration (? = 2713.28 P ? 0.05). The dependent variable CO2 sequestered was also regressed on the predictor variable soil organic carbon (SOC) to test the relationship. SOC insignificantly predicted CO2 sequestrated F (5.83, 2.62) = 0.2236; P ? 0.25, indicating that the SOC has an insignificant role in CO2 sequestration (? = 102780.3 P ? 0.05). Insignificant relation was observed between the parameters SOC and height of tree species to the rate of carbon dioxide sequestered, and gave a regression equation of y = 10278x + 50863 with R2 = 0.100; y=2713.285803x-209800.8762 with R2 = 0.55

The objectives of this research were to evaluate bamboo-oriented strand board (BOSB) characteristics made from betung (Dendrocalamus asper), ampel (Bambusa vulgaris), and their mixtures at two different contents (3% and 5%) of methylene diphenyl di-isocyanate (MDI) adhesives. The strands were steam-treated at 126°C for 1 h under the pressure of 0.14 MPa. Three-layered BOSBs with a target density of 0.7 g/cm3 were made with the size of 30 cm x 30 cm x 0.9 cm and a shelling ratio of 1:2:1 (face:core:back layers). The physical and mechanical properties of BOSB were evaluated following JIS A 5908 (2003) standard, and the results were compared with the CSA 0437.0 Grade O-1 standard. The results show that BOSB from the mixtures of betung and ampel bamboo strands has higher dimensional stability as shown by the decrease in water absorption and thickness swelling and higher mechanical properties than single BOSB. All BOSBs with 5% resin content have higher dimensional stability, MOE, and MOR than BOSB with 3% resin content. The physical and mechanical properties of all BOSB manufactured met the CSA 0437.0 Grade O-1 standard. This study proved that BOSBs from the mixture of betung and ampel strands have the potential to be developed due to having better physical and mechanical qualities than a single BOSB. Abstract Paper made from natural fiber of ampel bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris) and nano-activated carbon from sawdust had been tested as food packaging and showed its ability to maintain freshness and nutritive value of foodstuffs. However, as a packaging material, natural degradability of this alternative natural-fiber paper is required to be tested. This study aims to determine the effect of nano-activated carbon on paper’s biodegradation properties. The results showed that paper treated with nano-activated carbon degraded faster in the soil compared to paper made of bamboo fiber only (control) after 8 weeks of observation. The microorganism population density analysis showed that the paper with nano-activated carbon had a lower microorganism density than the control which accompanied by a decrease in paper weight after 12 weeks of observation. This finding demonstrates the potential utilization of nano-activated carbon as an additive to be inserted into paper to accelerate the biodegradation rate of paper in the soil. The ability of paper to be degraded naturally is very important to support environmental sustainability.

Abstract Bamboo shoots are buds in the root system of bamboo that grow and develop into young bamboo culm. The root system of bamboo, which has many internodes and buds produces many shoots but not all of them can grow and develop into bamboo shoots. Bamboo shoots can be used as a horticultural food commodity because they are usually harvested and consumed as a vegetable for several dishes. The purpose of this study is to analyze the financial feasibility of bambu ampel kuning (Bambusa vulgaris var striata) cultivation as a producer of bamboo shoots based on indicator criteria NPV, Net B/C, IRR, and payback period. Data are collected using field observations, interviews, and discussions with bamboo garden owners covering cultivation techniques, production facilities, and labor. The results show that the NPV value of Rp. 137,097,914.5 is greater than zero, the Net B/C of 2.309 is greater than one, the IRR value of 42% is greater than the interest rate used by 12%, and the payback period in the 5th year of the age of the bamboo shoot-producing business of 15 years. Based on the criteria for financial feasibility indicators, the cultivation of bambu ampel kuning (Bambusa vulgaris var striata) as a producer of bamboo shoots is feasible. We recommended cultivating bamboo shoots in marginal areas.

Tumbuhan obat saat ini masih dipergunakan untuk perawatan tubuh, diantaranya untuk rambut. Penelitian bertujuan menganalisis penggunaan beragam jenis tumbuhan obat untuk perawatan rambut oleh suku Dayak Kantuk di Desa Seluan Kabupaten Kapuas Hulu. Penelitian menggunakan metode survey melalui wawancara terhadap masyarakat suku Dayak Kantuk di Desa Seluan. Pengambilan sampel dengan teknik purposive sampling dengan jumlah responden 146 orang. Sebanyak 15 jenis tumbuhan obat dimanfaatkan oleh suku Dayak Kantuk. Penggunaan bagian tumbuhan tertinggi adalah buah (46,67%) dengan cara pengolahan ditumbuk (50%), cara penggunaan dioles (93,33%), dan bentuk ramuan tunggal (73,33%). Jenis tanaman dengan nilai penggunaan (use value, UV) tertinggi yaitu lidah buaya (Aloe vera) (0,28), sedangkan family importance value (FIV) tertinggi yaitu Arecaceae (28,37). Nilai informants concensus factor (ICF) tertinggi terdapat pada kategori mengatasi rambut bercabang (1,00). Nilai fidelity level (FL) tertinggi (100%) pada kategori penggunaan menghitamkan rambut dengan jenis tanaman yaitu pepaya (Carica papaya), menyuburkan rambut yaitu seledri (Apium graveolens), melembutkan rambut yaitu sawit (Elaeis guineensis) dan bunga kembang sepatu (Hibiscus rosasinensis), menghilangkan ketombe yaitu daun pare (Momordica charantia), jeruk nipis (Citrus aurantifolia) dan mengkudu (M. citrifolia), mengatasi rambut berkutu yaitu akar tuba (Paraderris elliptica), dan mengatasi rambut bercabang yaitu daun bambu (Bambusa vulgaris). Penggunaan beragam jenis tumbuhan obat oleh suku Dayak Kantuk untuk perawatan rambut menambah pengetahuan tumbuhan obat masyarakat di Kalimantan Barat.    Kata kunci: Dayak Kantuk; perawatan rambut; tumbuhan obat  ABSTRACTThe utilization of medicinal plants for hair care by Dayak Kantuk Tribe in Seluan Village Kapuas Hulu District. Haircare is one of the body treatments that still use the medicinal plants. The purpose of the study was to analyze the use of various medicinal plants for haircare by the Dayak Kantuk tribe in Seluan Village, Kapuas Hulu Regency. This present study uses a survey method through interviews with the Dayak Kantuk people in Seluan Village (146 respondents and selected using the purposive sampling technique). The Dayak Kantuk people in Seluan village use 15 medicinal plants for their haircare. The highest use of plant parts was fruit (46.67%) with crushed in the processing method (50%), the administration method was topically (93.33%), and the potions are mainly a single ingredient (73.33%). The plant with the highest use value (UV) was Aloe vera (0.28), while the highest family importance value (FIV) was Arecaceae (28.37). The highest informant consensus factor (ICF) was in the haircare treatment category of ameliorating split ends (1,00). There are six haircare treatment categories with the highest fidelity level (FL) (100%) and plant used, namely: maintaining black hair (Carica papaya), hair nourishing (Apium graveolens), hair softener (Elaeis guineensis and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), dandruff elimination (Momordica charantia, Citrus aurantifolia, and Morinda citrifolia), hair lice elimination (Paraderris elliptica), and ameliorating split end (Bambusa vulgaris). The use of various species of medicinal plants by the Dayak Kantuk tribe for haircare adds to the knowledge of medicinal plants in West Kalimantan. Keywords: Dayak Kantuk; haircare; medicinal plants
