The purpose of the study was to explore the effectiveness of a training program of enhancing Arabic language teaching practices on developing grade-ten students’ reading comprehension skills in Oman. The study sample consisted of 40 teachers and 400 male and female students. A training program, an observation form and a reading comprehension test were developed. The results showed there are statistically significant differences between the average scores of the experimental and the control groups after applying the teaching practices for developing reading comprehension skills (the literal, the inferential, the critical, the aesthetic and the creative). This also applied to the total score, with the experimental group outperforming the control group. There is no statistically significant effect of the interaction between the study group type and gender in developing these skills among Arabic language teachers. The study results indicated that there are differences in developing reading comprehension skills between male and female grade-ten students in both study groups, in favor of females. The researcher recommends organizing training courses for Arabic language teachers to improve reading comprehension skills when analyzing a passage and to benefit from the designed observation form. Keywords: training, teaching practices, reading comprehension * This article is extracted from an unpublished PhD dissertation by the first author, Maryam Hasan Al Balushi, titled " The effectiveness of a training program based on the constructivism theory in developing the practices of Arabic teachers in develping the reading comprehension skills of grade ten student in the Sultanate of Oman and teachers attitudes towards constructive teaching. Students’ reading comprehension was found to be one of the major concerns with all teachers worldwide. It is essential to optimize students’ performance in all courses. Yet, we claimed that gender, and reading attitudes and practices could influence reading comprehensibility. We utilized descriptive-correlational design of quantitative research. Descriptive design was used to obtain the attributes of students’ reading attitudes and practices. Moreover, we used a correlational design to determine the relationship or association between and among attributes and their level of reading comprehension skills. We found out that students have a positive attitude towards reading when reading materials are educational and entertainment. In terms of the significant relationship between reading attitudes and practices, results reveal that reading attitude does not always affect reading practices. In terms of the relationship between student’s reading attitudes and practices and their levels of reading comprehension skills, student’s reading attitudes and practices have no significant relationships to all levels except between their reading attitudes and their comprehension skills in the Inferential Level. Lastly, in terms of the significant difference between male and female students’ reading comprehension skills, there is a statistical difference in the Literal and Evaluative Levels between the male and female. Thus, reading comprehension skills vary in these two levels. On the other hand, they showed no statistical difference in the Inferential and Critical Levels between the male and female. Therefore, the Literal and Evaluative Levels of male and female to reading comprehension skills are due to their reading attitudes and practices individually.

Based on a mixed method research design, this study aims to investigate the effectiveness of applying scaffolding strategies in enhancing reading comprehension skills of female students at King Abdulaziz University in the city of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. The participants of the study were thirty-three female students at the preparatory year program (PYP) who were registered at the proficiency level 104 (B1/Threshold level on the Common European Framework of reference for language; CEFR). They were divided into two groups: Seventeen students in the control group and sixteen students in the experimental group. Both groups were exposed to the same reading lessons but with the experimental group exposed to scaffolding strategies. Prior to the treatment, a pretest was administered to both groups. Once the treatment was accomplished, a posttest was administered to investigate the effect of applying scaffolding strategies on developing reading comprehension skills. Furthermore, qualitative data was collected via open-ended questionnaire. The results of the study indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between the pretest and posttest of the experimental group in favor of the posttest. Furthermore, students showed a positive attitude to the scaffolding technique as a motivation factor to their learning. Conclusions and recommendations for further research are given at the end of this study.
