Robotic surgery has the potential to revolutionize the field of surgery and improve patient safety. However, despite the advantages robotic surgery can offer, there are multiple human factors-related issues that may prevent these systems from realizing their full benefit. This study identified some of the salient human factors issues and considerations that need to be addressed for integration of new technologies such as robotic systems into the Operating Room of the future. We conducted in-depth interviews with operating team members and other stakeholders who have experience with robotic surgery to identify workflow, teamwork, training, and other clinical acceptance issues. Addressing these and other human factors issues will help the integration of surgical robotic systems into use for the ultimate goal of improving patient safety and healthcare quality.

Crew resource management (CRM) was introduced to enhance patient safety and reduce medical errors through multidisciplinary learning experience. This study investigates the impact of locally adopted simulation-based CRM training on participants’ perceptions and knowledge. A 32-item web-based questionnaire was administered pre course, 1 month, and 1 year post course to assess changes in perceptions and knowledge. Another 12-item paper-based questionnaire was administered immediately post course to assess reactions. Among 712 participants analyzed, 165 were operating room staff. The majority agreed that the training is useful and relevant in daily practice. All participants showed significant improvements in perception and knowledge 1 month post course; however, these improvements declined 1 year post course. The CRM course is associated with satisfactory reaction (Kirkpatrick level 1) and improvement in attitude and knowledge (level 2) toward patient safety. However, the effect may be short-lived and regular refresher courses should be mandatory to sustain momentum of ongoing change.

Background Non-technical skills are cognitive and interpersonal skills underpinning technical proficiency. Ethical values and respect for human dignity make operating room nurses responsible for nursing decisions that are clinically and technically sound and morally appropriate. Aim To learn what ethical issues operating room nurses perceive as important regarding non-technical skills. Research design Qualitative individual in-depth interviews were conducted. The interviews were analysed using Braun and Clarke’s six phases for thematic analysis. Participants and research context Eleven experienced perioperative/operating room nurses working in an operating unit at a Norwegian university hospital. Ethical considerations Approval was given by The Norwegian Social Science Data Service in care of the hospital’s Data Protection Officer. Findings Three main themes were found: respect and care for the patient, making the patient feel safe, and respect within the perioperative team. These features or themes, which incorporate collaboration and communication, are closely connected to patient safety. Discussion Defending the patient’s dignity is part of caring for and respecting the patient. The manner in which the operating room team collaborates is important for the patient to feel safe and secure. Poor teamwork may have dire consequences. Reciprocal respect within the team includes respect for each other’s tasks and responsibilities and to talk to one another in a friendly manner. Conclusion Being respectful and contributing to a caring atmosphere are central ethical skills in the operating room. To patients, harmonious teamwork translates into a feeling of safety and being cared for. The nurses see respect and patient safety, and respect and reciprocal politeness among the members of the perioperative team as central ethical non-technical skills. Lack of respect influences the team negatively and is detrimental for patient safety. Good communication is an important safety measure during surgery and creates a feeling of good ‘flow’ within the operating room team.

The use of the Surgical Safety Checklist (SSC) is associated with improving patient care according to nursing process standards includes the quality of work of the operating room nurse team. The form of professionalism in the operating room is how the application of a surgical safety checklist as the standard procedure for patient safety in the operating room. This study aims to determine the relationship of characteristics, knowledge, and motivation of nurses in the application of the surgical safety checklist in the operating room of a Batam city hospital. This research is quantitative using an observational analytic research design. This study was conducted on 67 nurses who were taken by total sampling. This research was conducted in three Batam City Hospitals, with hospital accreditation at the same level. Data were analysed by univariate and bivariate using the chi-square test. The results of the study found that most nurses had education at diploma level, with a working period experiences of > 6 months (82%); good knowledge (53.7%) with low motivation (57.7%). There is a relationship between education (p = 0.042); length of work experience (p = 0.010); knowledge (p = 0.002); and motivation (p = 0.05) with the application of SSC. It is expected that health services carry out SSC following the applicable SOPs in the Hospital so that it can reduce work accident rates and improve patient safety.

Penerapan Surgical Safety Checklist (SSC) berhubungan langsung dengan kualitas asuhan keperawatan yang termasuk adalah bagaimana perawat menerapkan fungsi sebagai bagian dari kamar operasi.
