scholarly journals An integrative model of a methodological system of teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language to English-speaking applicants for higher medical education

For foreign medical students, their command of the Ukrainian language determines not only the process of socialization, integration of a communicative personality into the academic and socio-cultural environment, but also is a means of forming the skills of their professional communication as future specialists. The lack of an integral integrative system of teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language (UFL) to English-speaking academic contingent of foreign medical students causes disagreement between the tasks and content of language education, theory and practice of teaching UFL, as well as the lack of phasing and succession in the formation of the professional and communicative image of future foreign doctors, who receive higher education in Ukrainian medical universities in English. The author proposes an integrative model of the Ukrainian language teaching system for English-speaking applicants for higher medical education in Ukraine. The basis for the development of an integrative methodological system was the identification and analysis of the specific communicative needs of the English-speaking contingent of foreign students of Ukrainian medical universities, the characteristics of the methodological parameters for the implementation of urgent communication needs; systematic analysis of innovative development trends and structural and content features of the paradigm of language education, software and educational-methodological support of teaching UFL to foreign students in compliance with the requirements of the modern paradigm of language education; personal experience of teaching in an English-speaking foreign audience and the experience of the Language Training Department 1 of the Institute of International Education for Study and Research of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University in providing language education services to such a contingent of students.

Background: In Romania, foreign medical students have the possibility to learn the same curricula in Romanian, English, or French. The purpose of the study: To compare students’ satisfaction with training and future career opportunities from the perspective of Romanian and foreign students. Methods: The study was conducted for terminal year medical students divided into two samples, Romanian and foreign language students. The participants were invited to fill in a satisfaction questionnaire about their professional training and to express preferences for future career. Results: Foreign students were more satisfied with the lectures and the teaching staff. They attended optional lectures more frequently in comparison with Romanian students. Foreign students were more inclined to attend medical conferences and to enroll in PhD programs. While Romanian students were more inclined to consider emigration, foreign students prefer to practice in their native countries. Conclusions: Compared to their Romanian colleagues, foreign students were more engaged in educational and research activities.

The article deals with the problem of forming a linguistic personality of foreign medical students. It appeared within the context of rapid changes in the world and national educational systems. The necessities of pedagogically motivated changes and rational introduction of various information and communication technologies into higher education have been emphasized. The problem of choosing more effective ways and innovative approaches capable of competing with the traditional methods of presenting educational information, supplementing and expanding their register has been outlined. The leading goal of such transformations is to prepare future competitive specialists in various industries, including medical. In the course of the research the necessity and the value of systematic use of innovative didactic methods and techniques, as well as modern forms of work, educational resources that will provide qualitative training of future medical specialists have been substantiated. Тhe authors of the proposed article paid their attention to the podcasting technology. They have interpreted the term “podcast”. Also, the peculiarities of podcasts serving foreign students studying the subject «Ukrainian as a Foreign Language» have been described in detail. It was proved that the motivated introduction of information and communication technologies in the courses «Ukrainian as a Foreign Language» is a way to improve the quality of non-professional preparation of foreign students. The transcript of the training podcast has been presented. This podcast can be used in practical classes in the discipline «Ukrainian as a Foreign Language» (3rd year, specialty «Medicine»). The topic of practical training is «In а Cardiology Department». In addition to this, the authors of this article have proposed the system of specifically designed assignments. They also have outlined main priority areas of the computerization of the national higher education system, defined research activities and future prospects in this field.

The article describes the main characteristics of the discourse approach in the system of teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language and the main components of the Ukrainian-language medical scientific-academic discourse as a basis for selecting the content of language education of foreign medical students of Ukrainian universities. By participating in the Ukrainian-language medical discourse, foreign medical students gain professional knowledge and the opportunity to become subjects of communicative practices of professional communication with equal professionals and various members of Ukrainian society (patients), to whom the future doctor's professional activity is directed. The author cites the following content components of the system of teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language: communicative roles of the subjects of medical discourse that regulate the communicative needs of foreign students; appropriate communicative intentions and strategies, tactics of realization of these intentions; genre forms of medical discourse; situational and thematic organization; basic communicative units of realization of medical discourse. Linguodidactic interpretation of this kind of medical discourse allowed to formulate partial principles of selection of language and speech materials for teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language. The characteristics of the essence and components of medical scientific-academic discourse are given in the article, the principles of selection of educational materials for teaching Ukrainian as a foreign language are singled out are the communicative-linguistic basis of language education of foreign medical students. The linguo-methodical interpretation of the studied phenomenon will help in the selection of language material and the creation of methodological developments and manuals on the Ukrainian language for foreign students; in the choice of teaching methods and techniques necessary for the formation of cognitive-linguistic skills of decoding / coding of a communicative event by instrumentality of a foreign (Ukrainian) language.

The article considers a negative impact on internationalization processes in Russian medical HE that is caused by the lack of a coordinated, unified, country-wide accepted system of testing English for professional communication. Authors describe how training and taking Occupational English Test is one of the ways to solve this problem, since OET is a widely acknowledged in English-speaking countries language certificate test for professionals in medicine. Adapting OET purposes to Russian medical HE system, establishing the network of training and testing centers will increase medical students’ and professionals’ motivation in learning English and stimulate their joining academic and professional community. These factors will contribute into the enhancement of internationalization processes in Russian medical HE.

Helga Tschurtschenthaler’s study is one of the most important scholarly contributions in recent years to the field of drama-based foreign language teaching. She conducted her research in an EFL class in an upper secondary school in multilingual South Tyrol and presents a plethora of data that demonstrates the impact of drama in foreign language education on students’ sense of self as emerging multilingual subjects (Kramsch 2009). What stands out about this study, besides its detailed presentation and analysis of student data, is the fact that Tschurtschenthaler succeeds in connecting recent theoretical contributions to the fields of language education and identity to more practical considerations. Abstract This article discusses the validity of the bonus for languages other than English (known as the Language Bonus) established in Australia to boost participation in language education. In subjecting this incentive plan to empirical investigation, we not only address a gap in the literature, but also continue the discussion on how to ensure that the efforts made by governments, schools, education agencies and teachers to support language study in schooling can have long-term success. Using data from a large-scale investigation, we consider the significance of the Language Bonus in influencing students’ decisions to study a language at school and at university. While this paper has a local focus – an English-speaking country in which language study is not compulsory – it engages with questions from the broader agenda of providing incentives for learning languages. It will be relevant especially for language policy in English speaking countries.

AbstractThe paper emphasises the potential of the autonomy-oriented approach as a scientific basis for the development of innovative training practices in medical universities of Russia. Based on a review of research, theory, and current teaching practices in Professor V.F. Voino-Yasenetsky Krasnoyarsk State Medical University, the paper considers both theoretical and practical aspects of the autonomy-oriented approach implementation in higher medical education. The benefits of the autonomy-oriented approach for both undergraduate and postgraduate medical students are demonstrated from the perspective of the Self-Determination Theory. Our findings indicate that the autonomy-oriented approach in higher medical education is associated with a more “personalised” teaching style through supporting students’ self-determination, engagement and autonomy. The summative evaluation of the results of the study with participation of 54 medical students and 33 medical university teachers suggests that the use of the autonomy-oriented approach in higher medical education leads to effective implementation of creative, innovative, contextual and problem-based training techniques as well as students’ and teachers’ personal and professional self-development.
