There is general agreement in mathematics about what continuity is. In this paper we examine how well the mathematical definition lines up with common sense notions. We use a recent paper by Hud Hudson as a point of departure. Hudson argues that two objects moving continuously can coincide for all but the last moment of their histories and yet be separated in space at the end of this last moment. It turns out that Hudson’s construction does not deliver mathematically continuous motion, but the natural question then is whether there is any merit in the alternative definition of continuity that he implicitly invokes.

The article deals with the love of Zygmunt Krasiński to Delfina Potocka. The point of departure is the poet's definition of love as looking and reads Krasiński's relationship with his beloved in the context of two phenomena that fascinated him at the time: daguerreotype and magnetism. The invention of the daguerreotype in which the history of photography and spiritism comes together becomes a pretext for the formulation of a new concept of love and the loving subject. In the era of painting the woman was treated as a passive object of the male gaze; photography reverses this scheme of power. Love ceases to be a static relationship of the subject in love and the passive object – the beloved. The philosophy of developing photographs (and invoking phantoms) allows Krasiński - the writing subject to become like a light-sensitive material that reveals the image of the beloved.

Since the development of the 5-point verbal and 11-point numerical scales for measuring noise annoyance by the ICBEN Team 6, these scales have been widely used in socio-acoustic surveys worldwide, and annoyance responses have been easily compared internationally. However, both the top two categories of the 5–point verbal scale and the top three ones of the 11-point numerical scale are correspond to high annoyance, so it is difficult to precisely compare annoyance responses. Therefore, we calculated differences in day–evening–night-weighted sound pressure levels (Lden) by comparing values corresponding to 10% highly annoyed (HA) on Lden_%HA curves obtained from measurements in 40 datasets regarding surveys conducted in Japan and Vietnam. The results showed that the Lden value corresponding to 10% HA using the 5-point verbal scale was approximately 5 dB lower than that of the 11-point numerical scale. Thus, some correction is required to compare annoyance responses measured by the 5-point verbal and the 11-point numerical scales. The results of this study were also compared with those of a survey in Switzerland.

AbstractMy point of departure in this essay is Smith’s definition of government. “Civil government,” he writes, “so far as it is instituted for the security of property, is in reality instituted for the defence of the rich against the poor, or of those who have some property against those who have none at all.” First I unpack Smith’s definition of government as the protection of the rich against the poor. I argue that, on Smith’s view, this is always part of what government is for. I then turn to the question of what, according to Smith, our governors can do to protect the wealth of the rich from the resentment of the poor. I consider, and reject, the idea that Smith might conceive of education as a means of alleviating the resentment of the poor at their poverty. I then describe how, in his lectures on jurisprudence, Smith refines and develops Hume’s taxonomy of the opinions upon which all government rests. The sense of allegiance to government, according to Smith, is shaped by instinctive deference to natural forms of authority as well as by rational, Whiggish considerations of utility. I argue that it is the principle of authority that provides the feelings of loyalty upon which government chiefly rests. It follows, I suggest, that to the extent that Smith looked to government to protect the property of the rich against the poor, and thereby to maintain the peace and stability of society at large, he cannot have sought to lessen the hold on ordinary people of natural sentiments of deference. In addition, I consider the implications of Smith’s theory of government for the question of his general attitude toward poverty. I argue against the view that Smith has recognizably “liberal,” progressive views of how the poor should be treated. Instead, I locate Smith in the political culture of the Whiggism of his day.

Digital measurement devices, such as coordinate measuring machines, laser scanning devices, and digital imaging, can provide highly accurate and precise coordinate data representing the sampled surface. However, this discrete measurement process can only account for measured data points, not the entire continuous form, and is heavily influenced by the algorithm that interprets the measured data. The definition of cylindrical size for an external feature as specified by ASME Y14.5.1M-1994 [The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1995, Dimensioning and Tolerancing, ASME Standard Y14.5M-1994, ASME, New York, NY; The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1995, Mathematical Definition of Dimensioning and Tolerancing Principles, ASME Standard Y14.5.1M-1994, ASME, New York, NY] matches the analytical definition of a minimum circumscribing cylinder (MCC) when rule no. 1 [The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1995, Dimensioning and Tolerancing, ASME Standard Y14.5M-1994, ASME, New York, NY; The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1995, Mathematical Definition of Dimensioning and Tolerancing Principles, ASME Standard Y14.5.1M-1994, ASME, New York, NY] is applied to ensure a linear axis. Even though the MCC is a logical choice for size determination, it is highly sensitive to the sampling method and any uncertainties encountered in that process. Determining the least-sum-of-squares solution is an alternative method commonly utilized in size determination. However, the least-squares formulation seeks an optimal solution not based on the cylindrical size definition [The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1995, Dimensioning and Tolerancing, ASME Standard Y14.5M-1994, ASME, New York, NY; The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 1995, Mathematical Definition of Dimensioning and Tolerancing Principles, ASME Standard Y14.5.1M-1994, ASME, New York, NY] and thus has been shown to be biased [Hopp, 1993, “Computational Metrology,” Manuf. Rev., 6(4), pp. 295–304; Nassef, and ElMaraghy, 1999, “Determination of Best Objective Function for Evaluating Geometric Deviations,” Int. J. Adv. Manuf. Technol., 15, pp. 90–95]. This work builds upon previous research in which the hull normal method was presented to determine the size of cylindrical bosses when rule no. 1 is applied [Turek, and Anand, 2007, “A Hull Normal Approach for Determining the Size of Cylindrical Features,” ASME, Atlanta, GA]. A thorough analysis of the hull normal method’s performance in various circumstances is presented here to validate it as a superior alternative to the least-squares and MCC solutions for size evaluation. The goal of the hull normal method is to recreate the sampled surface using computational geometry methods and to determine the cylinder’s axis and radius based upon it. Based on repetitive analyses of random samples of data from several measured parts and generated forms, it was concluded that the hull normal method outperformed all traditional solution methods. The hull normal method proved to be robust by having a lower bias and distributions that were skewed toward the true value of the radius, regardless of the amount of form error.

In view of the low likelihood of the acceptance of the social science approach to alcohol problems proposed several years ago, a “common sense” approach is suggested as an alternative. Several assumptions guide this proposal, the principal one being the absence of any significant progress in the reduction of alcohol problems in the United States over the past 200 years. By the development of a common vocabulary and direct methods of observation and data collection, the “common sense” approach would provide for identifying the strengths of the multitude of past and current efforts in dealing with alcohol problems in terms of both intervention and prevention. The guiding criterion in such an approach would be the impact on alcoholism and alcohol-related problems, the definition of which would be a major task of the research.

Categorical constructions inherent to a theory of algebras with strict partial operations are presented and exploited to provide a categorical deduction calculus for conditional existence equations and an alternative definition of such algebras based on the notion of syntactic categories. A compact presentation of the structural theory of parameterized (partial) specifications is given using the categorical approach. This theory is shown to be suitable for providing initial semantics as well as the compositionality results necessary for the definition of specification languages like ACT ONE and ACT TWO

Al-'adah muhakkamah, literally ‘customary usage is the determining factor’,is one of the five universal maxims of Islamic jurisprudencewhich have a wide branch coverage agreed upon by the scholars.This maxim is built on the basis of custom and local wisdom that exists in every community, where this custom is continuously carried out by the community without any denial from them; it is precisely individuals who violate these customs will be considered "freaks". Therefore, Islam makes the customs of a community a legal basis as long as they fulfill the requirements stipulated by Sharia.The formulation of the problem in this study is about: (1) the definition of the al-'adah muhakkamah maxim, (2) the conditions for applying it, and (3) its application in determining the amount and type of dowry. This paper tries to study a jurisprudence principle and apply it to a jurisprudence problem so as to form a complete understanding of the rules as well as how to apply them in the branch of jurisprudence. The conclusions of this study are: (1) that 'adah is something that happens repeatedly which is accepted by common sense and human nature, (2) an 'adah can become a legal basis if it does not contradict the arguments of the Sharia, it is more often done than abandoned, there is no words of the' adah doer who excludes, and the 'adah must exist at the time the covenant occurs,(3) the rule of al-'adah muhakkamah can be applied to determine the number and types ofmis^ldowries, as well as musamma dowries which are absolutely stated.
