<p><b>The Chathamiidae are an interesting family of caddisflies, unusual as all of the five known species are believed to breed entirely within the marine intertidal, comprising one of very few known marine insect groups. Additionally the family approaches almost complete endemicity status in New Zealand, and may represent an ancient lineage representative of ancient vicariance from Gondwana. However one species, the common and widespread Philanisus plebeius is also known to have a disjunct population in New South Wales Australia, hypothesised to represent a recent anthropogenic dispersal. This thesis, using DNA information, examined the Chathamiidae at varying phylogenetic levels.</b></p> <p>Firstly the species Philanisus plebeius was incorporated into a thorough intraspecific phylogeography, including samples from both New Zealand and Australia. The population as a whole was genetically diverse, with the population divisible into two major haplogroups, each restricted to discrete geographic areas with no overlap being observed. One of these groups was restricted to just two localities in the central eastern North Island, whereas the remainder included most remaining samples from both Islands of New Zealand, and also Australia. All Australian samples were found to comprise a single haplotype, differing by a single base pair from the most common haplotype in New Zealand. It was decided that the Australian population therefore represents a recent dispersal event from New Zealand, although unless the Australian haplotype remains undiscovered in New Zealand the level of divergence found is not congruent with a human introduction. One sequence intermediate between the two major haplogroups was identified from a single haplotype from Tauranga. It seemed that much of the population of Philanisus plebeius has been affected by recent demographic expansion, likely due to the effects of the last glacial maximum (LGM).</p> <p>The five species of the Chathamiidae were then analysed in a phylogeny. It was found that the genus Chathamia was polyphyletic, with the species C. integripennis nested within the genus Philanisus. The remaining species, C. brevipennis from the Chatham Islands, was basal to all the remaining members of the family. A strict molecular clock found a recent Pleistocene age (roughly 0.5 Ma) for divergence of the Kermadec Island species Philanisus fasciatus, and a Pliocene-Pleistocene age (roughly 3 Ma) for the Chatham Island species Chathamia brevipennis. For a comparison with the species C. brevipennis, the other Chatham Island caddisfly taxa Oecetis chathamensis, and Hydrobiosis lindsayi were compared with New Zealand relatives; indicated to have late and early Pleistocene ages respectively. A short sequence of the gene COI was amplified for the species Philanisus mataua, however this was found to contain two sequences reflecting either heteroplasmy or sample contamination, inhibiting confident phylogenetic placement. Additionally a larval sample from Sydney was demonstrated to represent C. integripennis, recorded outside of Northern New Zealand for the first time. Finally the Chathamiidae was included in a higher level phylogeny with related families, and was show to comprise a monophyletic group, sister to the Australasian family of the Conoesucidae. A relaxed molecular clock estimated a Cretaceous (roughly 90 Ma) age for the Chathamiidae, congruent with a vicariant age in New Zealand.</p>

Four new species of Actaecia Dana are described from Australia; three of these (A. bipleura, A. cyphotelson and A. nasuta) are from beaches in south-eastem Australia and one (A. forrnida) is from the mid-eastern coast of Queensland. Specimens from Tasmania identified previously as Actaecia pallida Nicholls & Barnes belong to A. bipleura. The same probably applies to others from New South Wales and Lord Howe Island. The distributions of the six Australian species are noted. A review of the monogeneric family Actaeciidae includes a new diagnosis of Actaecia and a key to species. The distributions of the two New Zealand species are listed.

The discovery of a new genus of Heatherellidae in New Zealand has led us to revise this enigmatic family and its constituent genera. Aheatherella n. gen., based on A. mira n. sp. from the North Island of New Zealand, lacks some of the derived character states that link the Australian Heatherella, most notably the lack of sexual dimorphism in the dorsal shields and in the presence of peritremes in adult Aheatherella. Heatherella osleri n. sp. is described from New South Wales, extending the distribution of this genus beyond Queensland. New collection records of H. callimaulos and a key to the genera and species of the family are provided. We propose that the Heatherellidae—previously placed in its own cohort outside the Gamasina—are best considered a superfamily of gamasine mites within the subcohort Epicriiae.

Cimoliasaurus maccoyi Etheridge, 1904 is a poorly known plesiosauroid from the lower Cretaceous (Aptian) opal-bearing deposits (Doncaster Member, Wallumbilla Formation) of White Cliffs, New South Wales. Characters used to define the taxon are found to be either uninformative beyond higher taxonomic levels, ontogenetically related or misinterpreted, suggesting that C. maccoyi is a nomen dubium. Provisional referral of the C. maccoyi remains to Elasmosauridae gen. et sp. indet. may be warranted on the basis the derived morphology of its cervical vertebrae. A review of 'cimoliasaurian' taxa described from the Callovian to Maastrichtian of Europe, North and South America, New Zealand and Australia indicates that all can either be reassigned or represent nomina dubia. The taxonomic status of Cimoliasauridae is also tenuous, with the family established on largely non-diagnostic characters.

This chapter analyses the earliest of the New Zealand coming-of-age feature films, an adaptation of Ian Cross’s novel The God Boy, to demonstrate how it addresses the destructive impact on a child of the puritanical value-system that had dominated Pākehā (white) society through much of the twentieth century, being particularly strong during the interwar years, and the decade immediately following World War II. The discussion explores how dysfunction within the family and repressive religious beliefs eventuate in pressures that cause Jimmy, the protagonist, to act out transgressively, and then to turn inwards to seek refuge in the form of self-containment that makes him a prototype of the Man Alone figure that is ubiquitous in New Zealand fiction.

AbstractThe lichen genus Lecanactis Körb. in Tasmania comprises six species: L. abietina (Ach.) Körb., which is widespread and pan-temperate; L. latispora Egea & Torrente and L. neozelandica Egea & Torrente, both shared with New Zealand and with the former recorded here from the Auckland Islands for the first time; L. mollis (Stirt.) Frisch & Ertz, shared with Victoria and New Zealand; L. aff. dilleniana (Ach.) Körb., a European species recorded provisionally for Tasmania on the basis of several sterile collections; L. scopulicola Kantvilas, which is described here as new to science and apparently a Tasmanian endemic. This new taxon occurs in rocky underhangs and is characterized by a thick, leprose thallus containing schizopeltic acid, and 3-septate ascospores, 19–30 × 4.5–6 μm. Short descriptions and a discussion of distribution and ecology are given for all species. A key for all 11 Australian species of the genus is provided, including L. subfarinosa (C. Knight) Hellb. and L. tibelliana Egea & Torrente, which are recorded for Australia for the first time, and L. platygraphoides (Müll.Arg.) Zahlbr., a first record for New South Wales. Lecanactis spermatospora Egea & Torrente and L. sulphurea Egea & Torrente are also included.

To date, the majority of research on migrant identity negotiation and adjustment has primarily focused on adults. However, identity- and adjustment-related issues linked with global migration are not only related to those who have recently arrived, but are also relevant for their subsequent descendants. Consequently, there is increasing recognition by that as a particular group, the “1.5 generation” who were born in their home country but came to new countries in early childhood and were educated there. This research, therefore, investigates 1.5 generation South Koreans’ adjustment and identity status in New Zealand. More specifically, this study explores two vital social spaces—family and school—which play a pivotal role in modulating 1.5 generation’s identity and adjustment in New Zealand. Drawing upon in-depth interviewing with twenty-five 1.5 generation Korean-New Zealanders, this paper reveals that there are two different experiences at home and school; (1) the family is argued to serve as a key space where the South Korean 1.5 generation confirms and retains their ethnic identity through experiences and embodiments of South Korean traditional values, but (2) school is almost the only space where the South Korean 1.5 generation in New Zealand can acquire the cultural tools of mainstream society through interaction with English speaking local peers and adults. Within this space, the South Korean 1.5 generation experiences the transformation of an ethnic sense of identity which is strongly constructed at home via the family. Overall, the paper discusses that 1.5 generation South Koreans experience a complex and contradictory process in negotiating their identity and adjusting into New Zealand through different involvement at home and school.
