The purpose of this investigation is clearly expressed in its title; it is an attempt to trace the development (whether positive or negative) of the degree or standard of musical taste or judgement throughout the school life of an unselected group of normal children.

The Inside-of-the-Body test was administered to an unselected group of 150 elementary school children in Grades 1 to 6. The most frequently identified body part was the heart. Musculoskeletal and visible body parts were identified by younger children. Children in the higher grade levels drew more cavity organs and their drawings more frequently showed the organs in the correct anatomic arrangement. The Inside-of-the-Body test may be a useful adjunctive tool in the psychological assessment of children by identifying the development of internal body perception in normal children as well as those with physical and psychological disorders.

The relationship between articulatory deficits and the development of syntax in children with severe articulation problems was investigated. Subjects in the experimental group were 30 normal elementary school children, enrolled in grades one through three, who had severe problems with articulation. Thirty normal children, free from any articulation errors, served as a control group. Children with defective articulation performed significantly less well in the areas of grammatical usage, and used shorter sentences. The relationship between phonological and syntactical errors is discussed, with implications for therapy.

In the Spring of 1948 while teaching at a primary school, I observed a small group of girls playing a game called "Tip the Finger". During the game one of the players chanted the following rhyme: "Draw a snake upon your back And this is the way it went North, South, East, West, Who tipped your finger?" I recognized immediately and with some surprise that this rhyme contained elements which were not invented by the children and were probably of some antiquity. I knew, for example, though only in a vague and unlearned manner, that the four pattern of the North, South, East and West and the Snake symbolism were recurrent motifs in mythology and folklore. I was aware also that there did not exits any specialized attempt to explain the part that games of this nature played in the lives of the players.

The authors of the Spens Report state that the curriculum of the secondary school should be developed around an attitude to life, and one main core of learning which is to be found in what are generally known as the English subjects. These consist of history and geography ("social studies" in the third and fourth forms) and English itself. Of these, perhaps the one most capable of integrating the others and giving meaning to the secondary course is English in the narrower sense. Its influence does not end with school life; the outlook of boys and girls, and consequently their actions, will have been influenced, perhaps quite unconsciously, by the "reading, discussion and reflection which the study of English provides and stimulates." It is the hope of the teacher of English that this will produce clear critical thought and expression.
